Will Roos coach again?

In an article on the AFL website on the topic of Roos coaching again, the following was written:

In the eyes of this column, Roos’ time at Melbourne was a resounding success for he resuscitated a lifeless, stricken club, and gave it hope when there had been none for too long.

But, as is often the case with football clubs, there are now some connected to Melbourne who say he couldn’t have left soon enough. 

Jesse Hogan would’ve returned to Perth, some are now saying, had Roos stayed. Other players would have sought new homes, it has been stated from within. Simon Goodwin and his more attacking, free-the-players’-minds outlook on life was deliberately held back by Roos, they’re now murmuring.

These things are easy to say after one has gone. The fact is the Demons were an unmitigated mess when Roos started at the end of 2013. Two rounds in to 2017, they are seen as a strong possibility for finals.

Roos was coach until the Demons’ last game of 2016. His charter was to leave it a far better place than the one he entered. He did. Can’t imagine him caring one bit about what some are saying now that he has gone.

 

Interesting if true, that several players would have left if he stayed. I thought they all loved him.

It's pretty widely known that the players love Goody, but Hogan and "some" others couldn't stand Roos. 

He's done his job at the Dees.  If he coaches he coaches.  Good luck to him.

Disappointing if that is the case, and shows that some still are well ahead of themselves.

It may have been bitter medicine, but it was necessary medicine for those blokes to swallow. Some of those 2014 games were awful to watch on an aesthetic level. However, it was also nice not to be carved up by 10 goals plus every week.

That has helped them become at least something resembling a football team. They best want to remember that as they are no where near where they need to be just yet.

Though I get the feeling however that this may come from a disgruntled ex employee with an axe to grind. Someone, pizzing into the tent. Leaks like this just haven't happened since PJ took over.

If we get to the finals over the next couple of years, which is looking more likely than not, the MFC should build a statue for Roos. In a decades time his legacy will be spoken of in hushed tones. He dragged our club from being a laughing stock irrelevance to competitive to challengers.

The opinions of a couple of disgruntled players matters not one iota.

Disappointed that they had to work harder for the same contracts. 

This is the main fault with paying 100% of a salary cap

The MFC was a retirement village for too long. Easy money. 

I wonder about Hogan. Are we better without him long term?

I think he will coach again, and I think the club he will coach is Collingwood. 

I also think the suns will probably move on rocket before mid year as well and look to offer the afl funded war chest to someone like Clarkson to try and get a "master coach"

Roos will only go somewhere if he feels his reputation won't be tarnished. He turned down a similar offer from Carlton a year before us because he knew winning a flag with that mob was unrealistic and would have been the club's expectation. He would have seen the job of turning Melbourne from a basket case into a respectable team, with a smooth succession plan, was easy money and easy enough to succeed. Can't see him going to Collingwood because the expectations will be similar to Carlton's.

FWIW Barrett is a scumbag but he has decent sources at our club, I'm going to take the comment re. Hogan and others as the truth.

Goodwin comes across as a relationship builder. That was not the charter offered to Roos. He was asked to implement a culture of excellence in an organisation that was totally stuffed. Roos' work was built on people trusting his experience and record. I can understand if some players did not like him too much, but that should be expected. 

But then I see who wrote the article - and I know for sure that this article is about muck raking and nothing else.

I don't think the Suns are that far off to be honest. Eade has lost the players, similar to how Neeld did with us. My source here in WA that told me Omeara and Prestia wanted out also thought Swallow would go to North to join Andrew. The plan changed though when GCS threw the kitchen sink at David and Andrew said take it, I'll join you at the Suns in 2018. Andrews contract at north expires this year so mark it down that the Swallow brothers will play footy together up there.

That said, the Suns will have a greater level of leadership to draw from in 2018 - much the same as what Roos set about doing to our list in 2014.

If Roos does join the Suns, he won't have half the task in front of him that he faced at the MFC. For that reason, I don't think the Suns will be in the market for him. They need a Goodwin more than we do as they will have the nucleus of a core of senior leaders.

The time of the Roos, Eades, Lyons et al are quickly drawing to a close.

I think Roosy would be barking mad to go again. Barrett's piece is his usual sensationalist diatribe.

Interesting, I must admit this isn't something I've heard before. That said I remember hear a lot of players towards the at of the season last year expressing their excitement about getting stuck into Goodwin's gamestyle and ideas. 

And just on the original OP's topic I would say his safer bet would be to go to the Gold Coast if he was going to go anywhere. Pies fans and stakeholders will be after immediate success if they replace Buckley, but I can see Roos doing a bit of a clean out to shore up the culture. Gold Coast he may well have to do the same thing but coming off a lower base with lower expectations he wouldn't be under the pump as much. 

FWIW I kinda hope he doesn't coach again. He's left good legacies at both clubs, he's managed to pocket himself some very nice coin in the process, and he is an excellent analyst for Fox Footy. I'd be inclined to say he's happy to say goodbye to that bubble.

Does he even want to do it again?  Seems like he is enjoying his new role in the commentary box, and he would be getting paid quite well to do it.  I guess if he felt he REALLY, REALLY wanted to do it then he might go back for the right club/deal, but I don't think we'll see it.  Or maybe I just don't want to see it.

I am thankful that Paul Roos was able to come to us and sort our club out on-field. He left in a much better position compared to when he started.

Having said that, i honestly couldn't care less if he did or did not return to coaching. Goody is our coach now. Don't care about any other coach/potential coach.

If there is any chance that Roos may again coach I hope all the key employees we can't afford to lose (assistant coaches, development people, list managers. etc) have watertight contracts to stop him from stealing them from us. It was clear when he started with us that he wanted people he was familiar with around him. I would have thought he would want to use the same modus operandi again. In fact, I'd go so far to say that if he can't get some of those key people to join him, I don't think he will coach again.
