Some seriously good coaching.

I thought we were done 1st qtr, and loved how all the players started running left nothing behind but put a score on the board. Then in the 4th you could tell everyone was cooked but we had it in the bag by then. So sorry for Nick and also Joel Smith he was really showing something straight out of the box.

Huge all team effort am deelerious

This might be a bit nasty but it was Riewoldt who hit Smith and it should have been a free. Maybe the gods were watching.

Afl website match report saying 2 melb injuries, Smith (shoulder) Gawn (back tightness)...?

Apart from the 1st quarter, that was the first time in so long that I didn't feel we would stuff it all up. It was a new emotion - confidence.

TMac improved as the game went on. OMac did some ok stuff late but he was the weakest link.

Leadership and maturity make a heap of difference. Lewis, Jones and Vince were amazing.

I have to agree now- Oliver is a total freak. So is Jetta.

Feel very sorry for Smith, he really looked like he belonged.

Hannan totally surprised me. A very good second half.

Feeling very good tonight.

I never want to see that first quarter again. Luckily we killed it in the other 3 quarters when our midfield starter to get on top and really dominate.

Oliver is next level.

Jetta I thought was superb

Thought Hannan was excellent too.

So happy to start the year this way. It was a 50/50 game and to come away from this with such a positive result is fantastic. Now the key is to back it up next week.

On a separate note, all the best to Reiwoldt.

Please don't compare a shoulder dislocation to a young kid, to a probable career ending knee to a champion of the game

Some more thoughts.

Anyone who ever doubted Jetta's place in the team take your humble pie and exit the thread. Paul Roos himself even made special reference to him towards the end.

Speaking of which, was weird watching the game with Roos' commentary. Very happy with what he achieved at the club but Team Goodwin did something in one game that he and about 5 other coaches couldn't do in a decade (beat the Saints).

Tom McDonald was immense, Oscar was not.

Lewis is bargain recruit of the year, like a fine wine, getting better with age.

Love how the crowd roars every time Hunt gets it in space. After a slow start, he showed 2016 was no fluke.

If we had taken McCartin over Petracca, there'd be a 100 page mega thread on here by now. McCartin is pedestrian, Petracca a star. Massive boo by the Saints.

Who the [censored] is Mitch Hannan? A [censored] gun is who! That goal in the third quarter was stupendously good and the moment I knew we would win.

Already mentioned Oliver, but he's next level good. Remember when we were in raptures when Scully got 39 against Dogs in the wet? Well Oliver nearly matched it today (15 in the third) and unlike Scully his disposals go to advantage.

Not convinced with Melksham, and a real shame about Joel Smith (who was looking good) and do feel for Nick but this isn't the thread for that.

I liked how there weren't any big celebrations at the end, this will count for little if we can't wipe Carlton off the park next week.

Phenomenal win!

The young blokes were fantastic after quarter time.

Lewis and Jones led brilliantly.

Hannan and Melksham (93% efficiency) had great debuts.

Feel sorry for Smith, he showed some lovely signs until Riewoldt landed on him to blow his shoulder.

Also feel for Riewoldt as it's never nice to see a veteran go down.

I didn't mean that, was more of an endorsement to Goodwin than anything.

Great to see that Roosy was down in the rooms after the game as well.  While this was very much a Goodwin victory, he would have watched on like a proud father as he watches what he planted begin to grow in front of his very eyes.

Great win.

One negative is that if Smith is unavailable, backline choices becoming seriously problematic. Add him to Hibberd, Garland, White, Wagner and Frost. The cupboard looking very bare.

First quarter was a mess.

2nd and 3rd were amazing. 4th was a blend between composed, erratic, and tired.

Overall, great win.

I have started following Roosy on instagram and going by his posts and photos he is still a huge Melbourne fan.
