Jack Watts

Whilst Watts will only have himself to blame for getting himself in the situation he has (which the club continues to keep us in the dark with), the FD will only have themselves to blame if Watts starts the year off in poor fashion. They have handled this situation (publicly) very poorly.

This is from the article on the website, not sure how much more they can say without telling us exactly what he has done/not done which I'm sure they don't want the world to know.

Mahoney confirmed that key forward would not play again this week and explained why.

“We think there has been some predictable, but unfair media speculation about Jack Watts’ non-selection. To clarify, the team is being selected on some key criteria, during the pre-season,” he said.

“Jack knows exactly what needs to be worked on and his past two or three weeks, he’s been working hard on what he needs to improve on in certain areas.

“He still remains a key player for us this season.”

Quite frankly, the football club be it staff or players, don't owe us an explanation for their internal kpi's on what Jack - or whoever for that matter needs to step up to the plate - for those getting a bit concerned about we're now leaking info and not keeping it internal - I actually think JM playing it with a straight bat give more creedence to keeping stuff in house. He'd be howled down by some for not keeping the information internal... so he is damned if he does, and damned if he doesn't... Jack may be upset, Jack may have been upset and now is getting on with it - his emotional state leading to certain behaviours is just wild speculation and fodder for a forum like this

Obviously Jacks been doing a Garry Lyon with Mrs Goodwin..... only plausible explanation or Goody has bought some shorts and found out the fit was crap and they fell apart.

KPI...... utter garbage. The club has a plan for something- possibly jack has something to work on behind closed doors, possibly it is his thumb and they don't want it out there. Possibly they know what he is capable of and are still looking at variations. Or he was late to Sunday night Roast and the Cicken was burnt. Regardless would expect him to play the last game and line up in round 1

Must be injured. No way Dion Johnstone is ahead of him on form or training form.

Poor by the club not to make a firm statement to the media to squash the speculation that surrounds him. It's only preseason, but given his history of copping it bad in the media it's poor manager by the club.

I would hope that is irrelevant. Jack and DJ shouldn't be competing for the same spot. DJ is competing with Kent, Garlett, BenKen and JKH. Given 3 of them are injured he gets an early opportunity.

And there's still some that think there's some kind of conspiracy theory.

How about "unsatisfactory preseason training standards" ?

Nah, that's too fat fetched.  FMD.

Then how is it that everyone who has witnessed him on the track is saying he has been flying and in great nick including journos? Seems like over 30 players have hit this certain criteria except Watts... I think it's back to the original rumor - an attitude problem

Don't think he is injured. Must have turned up late to training or off field  indiscretion... need to make an example as a club

He has been training like a bloke that thinks he is a walk up start. Lazy attitude . Ffs I explained this all days ago on the post match thread, was shot down, and here we are with clear proof of what I told you. He isn't working hard enough. If you went to the intra club match you would know the exact kpi's Mahoney is referring to. He was smashed in the one on one drills. He dropped basic marks when under no pressure. Jack thinks he has made it on the back of one decent season. He isn't even close and the FD are providing the reality check

To suggest the he is not in the best 22 is ludicrous. While there may be some issue with attitude/training/KPI's or whatever, If I was picking from a fit list he would always be in the top ten picks.  My first ten picks would be:

Gawn

Jones

Viney

Tyson

Jetta

Vince

T Mac

Lewis

Hogan

Watts

I would build the team selection around that

Definitely an eyebrow raiser seeing him left out again. There was an opportunity to keep the wolves at bay, yet the coaches have considered his training/form issues significant enough to keep the story circulating in the media for another week.

Hopefully Wattsy pulls his socks up quick smart. He's an important player now.

This to me, sounds likely. Not such a bad thing. If he could fix his approach to one on one contests he would be sensational. We have known this all along. He seems to lack the thing that Viney has heaps of. It may also coincide with Viney's elevation to captaincy. He would set such ferocious standards that he may illuminate others who don't go as hard. Viney is a rare beast though. Not many have that crazy-brave instinct. Jack Watts will always have to push himself to the physical contest. Its not in his nature but I have watched him try to override his first instinct over the past few years. He is getting better but they may want to ram this home. He is 25 and should be coming into his absolute peak as an effective footballer. I guess they just want to maximise his potential. Its probably a good thing but we will just have to see how he responds. Like many on here, I would be delighted to see him play to his full potential.

I'm actually glad they didn't pick him. They have made it clear that has not met the team KPIs, which i suspect is you train at 110% intensity each and every training session, weight session etc etc. Mahoney said almost exactly the same thing as TMac - he has improved in the last 2-3 weeks.

I'm glad 2-3 weeks of training at the required level does not get you a game under Goodwin. Lets hope he tore it up today, does so gain next week and gets a crack in the last game.

To be honest i'm really jacked off (pardon the pun) with JW. I had hoped the penny had dropped. For god's sake he is 26 and played over 100 games of AFL football. He is coming off his best year, a year made possible by his hard work in the pre season and intensity he brought to the table (remember how good he was in NAB cup) and he eases up. Where's his head at?

It's poor management of him either way by the club. Past history shows he does not respond well to the hard approach but rather a supportive one. To take the approach that does not work with him, and then let the media run wild laying into him, is poor management by the club.

If Jack isn't doing what they asked, then that's disappointing by him. But it's also disappointing the way the club has handled this situation.

Loving the standards Goodwin is setting.  He's developing a hard-nosed premiership quality list where everyone knows what's required to play footy under him.

The fact that I don't know the exact parameters Watts isn't meeting is irrelevant.  I don't need to know.

Mark Neeld had no relationship with most of the players. A completely dysfunctional game plan and constantly shuffled Jack around whilst also not dropping him and letting him build his game at a lower level.

Jack's 25 now and isn't a young player who has to be managed. He's an experienced senior AFL player who can live by the same rules as his team mates. His team mates have supported him in the media. Josh Mahoney has supported him.

It's unfair on the other 44 players if Watts get picked and 'supported' when they would've been left out. Who knows what Goodwin is doing privately? I'm sure he's been supportive and not abusing him.

How do you know what approach they are doing behind the scenes?

100% agree on both counts (though to be honest i would love to know what parameters he is not meeting - but glad they have not got out)

    WILDCARDS by KC from Casey

Casey’s season continued to drift into helplessness on Sunday when they lost another home game by a narrow margin, this time six points, in their Round 13 clash with North Melbourne’s VFL combination. The game was in stunning contrast to their last meeting at the same venue when Casey won the VFL Wildcard Match by 101 points. Back then, their standout players were Brodie Grundy and James Jordon who are starring in the AFL with ladder leaders, the Sydney Swans (it turned out to be their last

    LIFE SUPPORT by Whispering Jack

With Melbourne’s season hanging on a thread, Saturday night’s game against North Melbourne unfolded like a scene in a hospital emergency department.  The patient presented to the ward in a bad way. Doctors and nurses pumped life-saving medication into his body and, in the ensuing half hour, he responded with blood returning to his cheeks as he stirred back to life. After a slight relapse, the nurses pumped further medication into the bloodstream and the prognosis started looking good as the

It's Game Day and it very well could be the last roll of the dice for the Demon's finals aspirations in 2024. A loss to the bottom side would be another embarrassing moment in a cursed year for the Dees whilst a win could be the spark they need to reignite the fire in the belly.

    THE HUNTER by The Oracle

Something struck me as I sat on the couch watching the tragedy of North Melbourne’s attempt to beat Collingwood unfold on Sunday afternoon at the MCG.    It was three quarter time, the scoreboard had the Pies on 12.7.79, a respectable 63.16% in terms of goal kicking ratio. Meanwhile, the Roos’ 18.2.110 was off the charts at 90.00% shooting accuracy. I was thinking at the same time of Melbourne’s final score only six days before, a woeful 6.15.51 or 28.57% against Collingwood’s 14.5.89

    FROZEN by Whispering Jack

Who would have thought?    Collingwood had a depleted side with several star players out injured, Max Gawn was in stellar form, Christian Petracca at the top of his game and Simon Goodwin was about to pull off a masterstroke in setting Alex Neal-Bullen onto him to do a fantastic job in subduing the Magpies' best player. Goody had his charges primed to respond robustly to the challenge of turning around their disappointing performance against Fremantle in Alice Springs. And if not that, t
