Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

See him as a better version of Sylvia. Constantly teases and looks like he should be a gun but does not deliver consistently. He was putrid in some games this year.

He looks better in a top team but would not help us much at the moment imo.

If you were Port, why would you ever accept a pick in next year's draft in exchange for a player of clear quality?  You'd have to sit out a whole year before you even got your hands on the player recruited to replace the one you traded out, let alone started developing them.  It would be crazy; you might as well keep Hartlett for the season and get some use out of him, then just trade him the following year for the same pick.

It's easy to get excited about splashing trades about for a player we probably want, but if you want to have any hope of getting the deal done, you need to give some consideration about what the counter-party is trying to achieve as well, otherwise they're just going to tell you to go jump.

The same goes for offering up borderline players like ANB.  Unless they specifically want him and were intending on trading him in anyway (which would surprise me greatly), those kind of offers add nothing to the exchange; if anything they devalue it since.

Living in SA I get to see more of Crows/Port than Melbourne unfortunately. I can say with complete confidence that we really shouldn't go after Hartlett, especially with the contract he would be on.

He has talent and a booming kick, but even his kicking is only good over long distances, not great with vision or weighing passes. Even with a consistent run of good health he is inconsistent and prone to go missing.

If we want good kicks, which we do, we should also make damn sure they can play with consistency and break lines. Isaac Smih from Hawks isn't as good a kick but is a much better fit for example. Obviously he isn't available but we need the 'type'. Hartlett epitomises what we have struggled with for years- goes missing too often and teases with talent.

I'd be disappointed if we were pursuing him.

My only issue is his wild inconsistency. He can dominate a game and precisely the type of midfielder we need (strong, fast, long and accurate kick) or he can go missing out on the park for entire games.

I'd think it'd be relatively easy to involve a 3rd team like GWS or GCS that hold bulk 2016 picks, who would be happy to shelve a 1st rounder for next year.

Agreed. GC has something like 5 or 6 picks inside the top 30. If I were them I'd be spreading them out over 2016 and 2017 (and/or cashing some in for players) so I suspect they'll be doing some deals.

I think we have to face facts. We traded up last year to grab weeds and seem committed to hibberd this year.

Our fringe players and fringe picks aren't going to get us anything special back in the way of players or picks no matter how we try and package them.

HH won't be coming to us unless something really stupid happens on ports or our part.

The fact that I think Matt Jones offers value on our list indicates that Hartlett is the type of player we should be after.  We should have enough inside mids with N.Jones, Viney, Tyson, Oliver, Brayshaw, Neal-Bullen, Trengove.

If we want him we should be able to get the deal done as suggested above.  Port want to regenerate so prefer early picks this year, not next year.  I like ANB and he could be an AFL level inside mid but he's a fair way down our pecking order, he may be willing to move for more opportunity.  Two possible options:

  • 2017 1st round + ANB > GC for Pick 8, Pick 8 > Port for Hartlett (GC have a glut of early 2016 picks and are losing inside mids)
  • or maybe direct 2017 1st round + ANB > Port for Hartlett (since ANB is from Adelaide).

That's an enormous price to pay for Hartlett, he isn't worth that. I think we should avoid him.

Pick hopefully 10+ and fringe inside mid surplus to needs = enormous price?  Port are only considering trading him because they want an early pick to re-generate.

Neal-Bullen and Trengove won't make it and Jones will be 29 at the start of 2017. No way we're done for inside mids.

In an ideal world Hartlett is a player we'd be after, but with no first rounder for 2016 and Hibberd already targeted to play a similar role, I wouldn't be giving up a good player (which is what it would take) or a 2017 first rounder for HH.

If we are not going to the draft in 2017 we need to use first round picks towards absolute A graders who wil give us 5 years of top service. Not to dodgy shoulders knees etc. Roos said it when he said we lacked an A grader in the mids and that is who we need to get, if not this year then next. I hope we have the patience to get the right person.

I was thinking 2017 1st Round Pick to GWS for Pick 15 & Hoskin-Elliott.  (If GWS think we'll stagnate for example, they'd see this as giving us Pick 15 & WHE for Pick 8).

Pick 15 for Harlett.  And possibly throw in Nibbler as steak knives if required.  Personally I think Harlett is worth around the 8 - 15 pick range.

This would see us effectively trade our 2017 1st Round Pick & Neal-Bullen for Harlett & Hoskin-Elliott.  Outside run issue solved!

And lets not forget the addition of Melksham & Hibberd.

Or you could do the reverse like we did, and give up a pick in the current year's draft in exchange for a player of dubious quality, who had to sit out a whole year.

He can kick, but "outside run issue solved"?
I wouldn't have thought so.

I suspect Harlett will go to the Giants who have plenty of picks and where he'd be an icing on the cake type and his weapons will become more dangerous

Would he walk into their 22 though?

Kelly, Whitfield, Scully, Coniglio. Plenty of outside mids.

His best form yes, any less it'd be touch and go, and picking up a contract like he's on would be a bit of a risk.

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

    TRAINING: Monday 29th April 2024

Demonland Trackwatcher Kev Martin was on hand at Gosch's Paddock for Monday's training session and made the following observations. About 38 to 40  players down at training.  BBB walking laps.  Charlie Spargo still in rehab, doing short run throughs.  Christian Salem has full kit on and doing individual work with a trainer. He is is starting to get into some sprints. I cannot see Andy Moniz-Wakefield out there. Jack Viney and Kade Chandler have broken away from the

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f
