Oliver, Bugg and Weideman coming in makes us ridiculously young, especially with Dawes and M Jones coming out.

Average age on the field - 21yrs 6 months. Median age is 22.

From Watts up, there are only 5 players 25 years or older, which is even fewer than the Lions are fielding this week.

I don't see it as in inherent sign of our 'future guaranteed' or anything, we've all been burnt by that faith already. What I do find interesting is that mature players are being genuinely passed over by kids who are ahead of them on performance. Again, the Brisbane contrast - basically every uninjured mature player they've got is on the field, and the injured ones would be straight out there if they were available.

I'm sticking with it. Although I'm bit annoyed that @hulkweed has been taken as a Twitter handle.

Don't get too worried. #pedomyths and #dawesmyths never gained much oxygen either.

If Roos thinks his ready to play the Hawks then his ready to play anyone.

I'm excited to see him play and hope he gets a good crack at it.

I'm not sure I want him playing all four of our remaining games, but to get a taste before his first full pre-season should hopefully do good for him.

If your numbers are correct then this will be the youngest side since the inception of GC and GWS

pfft, Weed is gonna line Hodge (legally of course) and knock him into next year!!!

Well, if his grandpa's white line fever is at all hereditary ...

He's had poor days for Casey when it's been ferociously windy & the oppo had flooded the defence. That's not likely to happen on Sat.

You've prompted me to double check and 'show my workings';

Age 19 - Oliver, Weideman, Stretch

Age 20 - O.Mac, Petracca, Harmes, Brayshaw

Age 21 - Hunt, Hogan

Age 22 - Viney, Kent, Frost

Age 23 - Tyson, Bugg, T.Mac

Age 24 - VandenBerg, Gawn

Age 25 or more - Watts (25), Jetta (26), Garlett (27), Jones (28), Vince (30)

Total = 498 ... /22 = 22.6

Yes, there was an error. Actual average is 22.6. Median is still 22.

But, to cheer us all up, while I was looking at stats I came across the funny little stats details

Jack Viney holds the Melbourne record for both most tackles in a game and most contested possessions in a game. He is also on target for the highest tally of contested possessions in a season by a Melbourne player, needing just 50 more in the remaining four games, and possibly the highest season tally of tackles, needing 25 more to pass James McDonald's 143.

Max Gawn already has the top four Melbourne records for hitouts in a game, and more than half the top-20. He is also already well clear in first for most hitouts in a season by a Demon.

Dean Kent is on target to break the Demon's record for goal assists in a season, on 16, needing to pass 19. Of course, that will fall anyway as soon as Brayshaw gets a full season.

Tom McDonald's last three seasons are also all three of the top seasons for 1%ers by a Demon player.

Bernie Vince is now just one short of the Demon's club record for clangers in a season. Set by the great man himself, Tom Scully.

Lynden Dunn needs just 5 more games to reach the top-20 for games played without playing in a final, from any club. Maybe that's why he hasn't been getting selected?

This is what happens to me every year once we are out of finals contention.

I spoke to him at training today, he is bigger and has more shape than when I first spoke to him in pre season, not lacking in confidence either, another one who enjoys the contest, we only seem to recruit this type these days

Lol, I can just imagine you ogling his 19 year old body. "Put on a bit of muscle, Sammy?"

As you can see his body work is very good. He's shown that a bit at Casey this year, even against the bigger bodies.

`Thanks for that

It appears that the Draft assessment I posted earlier was in accurate

He does look like Kennedy and is very mobile

World of possibilities for nicknames for this bloke. I'm leaning towards hooch.

Not really a nickname but "Weids growing in the Hawks nest" would be a very nice start I thinks.

I'm going the pre-emptive write off just to be cautious. Too thin too inexperienced too strong a connection to the filth. Not enough skills at ground level, poor peripheral vision. One of those will be right. I'm off to golf !!!

heard Maxy and others speaking about him and the one thing they all say is he goes at the ball hard.  Max said no-one attacks the ball in the air like he does.  which is a massive endorsement.

great that we are recruitment tough lads and developing them the right way.  I feel sorry for the senior guys on our list that have been let down by a dodgy FD.

Has a lovely set shot action. He'll be using that hundreds of times over the next ten years in red and blue!

Absolutely!

An hour before the rookie draft had started he said we were going to pick Josh Wagner.

Don't know who the hell he is but he has 100% strike rate. He is like Ghost that predicts the future!

Give me this bloke any day over GNF.

We older posters will probably go for something that relates to Bill and Ben.

I haven't seen him play much, but get the feeling he will be better suited to AFL rather than the windy and wet conditions he has faced in the VFL every second week.

Good idea to give him a few games this year with relatively little pressure. Dawes is neither the future or the present.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
