That will make Hibberd a bit easier to get if we want him and he wants to come to us.  Hurley will have used up more salary cap on his new deal, along with the other banned players who have returned.

I actually think if Hurley has re signed, Hibbert might as well.

Yeah rumour my mates told me is both have re-signed.

Yeah it was my thoughts, if one left, the other would.

No one wants to be the one player to abandon the other guys..

Hurley is a missed opportunity, but Hibberd isn't much of an upgrade on any of our HBFers.

Rumours going around Hurley has signed with the dons. Source in the twittersphere.

Apparently will be released this afternoon.

I'm not too disappointed with this given the way our back half has matured / developed as a unit since the speculation on Hurley commenced.  Hurley would be good, but so will the cap space that his non-recruitment will free up.

I like Hibberd as a player, but I'm yet to be convinced he is what we need to push us forward.
While his hardness would be handy in the D50 along with his cannon of a left leg, I still think additional speed and backup ruck are where we need to focus our limited resources this year.

I could see Essendon being more open to moving Hibberd though, if Hurley is to re-up.
They will want to inject additional young talent and need to give up something for more half-decent draft picks.

Although I did see that a few clubs are into Laverde. Like WHE, I think he'd add a bit to our side.

John Worsfold   "All the way along from what I've heard of Michael and his loyalty, it would take something extraordinary for him to leave," he said.

"We all know the situation has been extraordinary so he's had to weigh all that up."

Interesting!

aren't they not allowed to be in contact?

From same article:

"But he's yet to hear back from the dominant defender, stretching out the Dons' preferred timelines on contract decisions for next season.

"I sent him a message the other day," Worsfold said.

"I thought he was overseas because he hasn't responded yet ... I'm hoping to hear from him and organise a time to catch up fairly soon."

Guilt tripping him into staying, classy Woosha.

This gets interesting, as Worsfold has not even spoken to Hurley. Still he says he will stay. Yet the player hasn't even touched base with the new Coach. You would think if he has, or is going to sign with the Dons, as some above have said has already happened, he would have had to chat to the new Coach.

They can be in contact and talk about what ever they like, as long as it isn't to do with football (i.e. coaching, training, game plans etc). They can discuss contracts and social matters.

Hurley signed for 5 years.

http://www.essendonfc.com.au/news/2016-08-18/club-statement-michael-hurley

Essendon Football Club is thrilled to announce All-Australian defender, Michael Hurley, has secured his long-term future at the Bombers after agreeing to a new five year contract extension.

The 26-year old’s new deal will see him run out in the red and black until the end of season 2022.

SEN have just announced Hurley has signed on with Essendon for the next 6 years. off the table

I question now whether we would need or want  one or both of these players.  The improvement in our defence has been excellent in the  second half of the season. The two Macs and Frost look capable  of now doing all of the heavy lifting.  We have very promissing players in Wagner and Hunt. Jetta is rock solid and we have Melksham and Salem to return.

Good.

Don't want the Dogs or Pies or whoever getting stronger by landing that type of fish.

Guess Essendon upped their under the table, outside of salary cap "compensation" payments by a few million, to secure his signature.

Convenient.

I heard they have almost all signed and the club is releasing a statement on a different signing every couple of weeks. The seem to think it is keeping their supporters enthusiastic.

It'll be about who they actually add to their list that will determine the success of their 2017.

Robbo said 4mil over the five years.

Pity it wasn't 5mil over 5 years. He's not that good.

MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
