Geez bandicoot - I am just so glad that you don't have any say whatsoever in our player management.  Your totally inexpert opinion thankfully matters not.

I'm glad this is being taken seriously.

If he ends up displaying something like this, I would be seriously worried:

That display is sickening, I hope nothing like that ever happens to Brayshaw. If he has to sit out the rest of the year, so be it.

Exactly - give him as long as the medical experts think he needs.  Saying he will be back in 2 weeks is just mind boggling - perhaps bandicoot has had a few too many concussions?

Short memory. Our very own Neville Jetta missed 4 weeks last season with a similar issue to Brayshaw.

And he is now back with a vengeance.

Angus is far too good a talent to risk in a year we are not destined for the top.....managed properly he could well be a very damaging asset when we are up there for a genuine crack at glory.

I don't recall writing him off for the season, please quote it... or I'll think you've been hitting your head against that wall again.

I said the research regarding concussion, particularly related to sports, is still in its infancy and is still being characterised.

The tests are continually being developed and are currently reliant (24 - 48 h post-incident) on players responses regarding feel and emotion.

It's also ironic that other tissue related injuries commonly require 4 - 6 weeks, and yet people like yourself consider a two week recovery as more adequate for someone having suffered three successive concussions or injury to the brain. So for that "lucky you aren't in charge of our medical department."

So again please remind me why did Sam Blease retire? and furthermore Leigh Adams and Matt Maguire? and what are the major setbacks for resting Brayshaw (from contact drills and play) for a minimum of 6 weeks?

If you're having trouble go and view the works and opinions of Prof. Andrew Kaye (a Melbourne brain surgeon) and Prof. Vicki Anderson (a Melbourne based and global leader in traumatic brain injury and concussion research in children).

There seems to be a lot of players in helmets this year - Daniel, Murphy, Griffiths spring to mind, and someone from Sydney was wearing one too. Are these concussion related? I know the general consensus has been that they don't help, but I can't see any other reason for them starting to make an appearance.

Ted Richards from Sydney.

I think all but Murphy that you listed are concussion related. Murphy is covering a huge gash in his head he copped a few weeks ago.

It's all speculation, even Doc Larkins. He wasn't there.

They may have pulled him from the game as a precaution, regardless of whether or not he passed the concussion test.

I trust they'll put him through a battery of tests and scans, so lets wait and see what happens rather than get silly with the armchair medical advice.

PS. I don't think a gimp hat will help Brayshaw in this instance.

I thought Ted ended up with a fractured cheekbone?

Maybe not, I'm not sure...

YES ! And regarding speculation as mentioend by another poster, what is there to speculate about having 3 concussions in a relatively short space of time??

Time to wise up. Im calling it, Brayshaw needs to miss minimum 6 weeks go through CAT scans MRI whatever it takes.

We have an obligation to ensure 100% that he is right! 99.9% doesn't evne come close in Welbeing /Concusion issues!

You are correct!

And I'm sure the club and its medical professionals will be aware that if not handled correctly any long term injury could result in a big damages claim in years to come.

Look what's happening in the US.

"SECOND year player Angus Brayshaw will be on the sidelines for an extended period after suffering two concussions in recent weeks."

The extend period should be the rest of 2016.

What we don't know about multiple concussions would fill a very large book but what we do know is they are far from good.

I'm not qualified in this area, but it seems to me to be the most sensible and appropriate decision, and quality player management by the MFC.

Something to factor into this as well is that the club is gearing up for a changeover to Goodwin. No way will risks be taken with a potential champion like Brayshaw for short term success on Roos watch. But aside from this, on a pure health perspective lets take the time and get him right.

Whether he shows signs of concussion or not (with the current tests on hand that are still being developed), I hope club the is mindful and sidelines him for 6 weeks.

We must remember the concussion/ traumatic brain injury research is still in its infancy with a lot more characterisation to go.

His absence for 6 - 10 weeks won't hurt the side and regardless his long-term health is far more important.

this really is alarming if players are at risk of brain damage

Does anyone know of players that have brain damage from footy (I think there was Bell?).  I would have thought if the risk is as big as predicted there would be dozens of players especially from the 80's when they would beat hell of each other.  Prior to this generation players would always play the next week and almost always keep playing in the same game, so hopefully we haven't seen an influx of affected players but I have not heard of any others

by the way, I ain't no doctor and don't have a lot of medical knowledge on this topic, so excuse my ignorance if others do

Daniel Bell suffered a number of head injuries at junior and senior level which severely restricted his performance.

I believe he sought compensation from Melbourne after he was delisted but I'm not sure how that turned out. However I remember reading an article on him a few years ago in which he spoke about his headaches and inability to concentrate.

At last the medical profession and the football world are taking concussion very seriously, and Angus should not play again until the club is absolutely certain that he is 100% OK.

And I believe the AFLPA are keeping a watch as well.

Did you miss the post above that says Dr Larkins believes he should be rested for the remainder of the year?

Additionally, we have no idea what his record was with concussions prior to joining an AFL team.  Players who attack the ball like Brayshaw does are likely to have suffered numerous concussions in junior competition... there is one such kid in my son's team (just under 14's) who has already suffered two or three concussions this year... to the point where he woke up with such a bad headache that he had to go to the hospital for an immediate check-up.

Not only did Blease retire due to issues but also there is the well publicised case of Daniel Bell who suffered brain damage.

I find it rather incredible that some supporters see the need to put these players out there regardless of potential major health issues, simply in order to improve our chances of winning a few games.  Some things are simply bigger than the game.

Its good that he woke up. Kid in my son's team did not wake up from a concussion.  I think there is a need for a completely independent doctor's assessment required. But I do trust the club to put Gus's welfare ahead of anything else.

Yes as we've pointed out previously some of these include Sam Blease, Leigh Adams, Matt Maguire, and Justine Clarke in 2016 (as 3Dee reminded us of).

Below is Clarke's departing message.

I recently watchd a movie called "Concussion" staring Will Smith which was based around a Pathologist who had formed an opinion that after a successsion of Concusions can result in permanent brain damage! This was based on real story!

Gridiron is the king of concussion sports and they have heaps of retired players who exhibit personality change, memory loss, early dementia, and other frightening conditions, due to repeated concussions.

Concussion is something you don't fleck around with. Keep Angus away from the ground, even the training ground, for as long as it takes, until the docs have given the all clear.

Agreed no risks should be taken. He is only a kid and potentially has years of footy ahead of him.

I sincerely hope he does not have any acquired brain injury .

If he does, he may have to find work hosting The Footy Show or on MMM.

The movie "Concussion" with Will Smith casts a sobering message which must be adhered to by ALL footy clubs , The AFL, the AFL P.A and club doctors. Do yourself a favour and watch it. Based on true and factual information.

I'm glad our footy club has taken this action!

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
