Meanwhile, the all-important NAB Challenge ladder is taking shape and the top four is already looking all too familiar. The Tigers are holding their spot in the eight:-

Thanks for the summary of ladder positions to date Jack, seems at odds with your stated lack of interest but I'm sure it fits together somehow. If anything interesting happens I'll let you know so you don't have to trawl through hours of boring footy watching youngsters make their way.

I also missed it live but watched at my leisure later in the day.  Just for the record I don't think Rooey watches much footy other than senior AFL.  Spoke to one of the players who said the only two Casey games Rooey saw last year were the ones that his son played in.

Anyway Rooey isn't really our coach, Goodwin is.  I bet he watched along with the assistants. 

BTW, why are you recording these games if you've got no interest in them?

The main thing I don't like about the NAB Challenge is the length of it. I mean, we have 4 weeks of it, and then a week off, before Round 1. Why are they doing split rounds for the first 3 weeks, when they get a week off before round 1 anyway, it makes little sense to me.

Just give everyone 2 games in 2 weeks, have a week off, and then get into the real stuff.

Agree.  NAB is an opportunity to experiment with new rules, but this one is never be used in the real season, so why continue with it.

Bob, the ladder thing is not because I have an interest in the NAB Challenge but rather because I really enjoy putting together ladders.

This probably comes from two decades of involvement with the Moorabbin Saints Junior Football League as ladder secretary. 

I tape the games just in case I find out something sensational has taken place during a game in which case, I can fast forward to the incident in question. So far, I reckon I might have watched a total of about 20 minutes ... maybe (and slept through half of it).

so.... we play our first game against a team playing their second, all while another couple of sides are also yet to play their first. Really doesn't make sense.

Mahoney has come out and said we're playing our best side all three games - not going to be a great level of confidence, should we be dusting off the cobwebs in especially early against a side who already has. Surely he would be better under promising and over delivering going into NAB 1

Won't really make much difference, at least on here. Some amongst us are probably already firing up their microwaves.

But I'd take "best side all 3 games" with a grain of salt, especially once we start resting players - which we'll do. Gawn, Vince and Jones aren't going to play all 3 NAB games, and there may still be Round 1 possibilities who hardly play at all (Lumumba, Petracca, Dawes).

Did Mahoney really say that? Totally idiotic if so. NAB is for giving your best a bit of a run and getting a good look at your newbies in action to see what they may offer. Why would you just play the same 24 players or so for three practice games?

Nothing wrong with fielding a strong side.  He does go on to say that it's an eight man bench, so in reality, it's your best side plus four playing emergencies.  The idea being to have the team fully firing for round one.  We don't have the luxury of easing into the season, nor will we be resting any stars so they're fresh for September.  The MFC list, if anything, needs every possible opportunity to play together as a team as there has been such a big list overhaul once more this preseason.

it's a "practice match".

Every club will have different agendas and those agendas are matched to best performance in round one, not supporters expectations.

Which of course means that the NAB Challenge is not far away.

MFC's elite performance manager Dave Misson reckons the Demons will attack the NAB Challenge with gusto and field strong teams - We’ll attack NAB Challenge: Misson but does it matter and do we really care?

It's a great opportunity for one or two of our players to get a major injury and completely stuff their season.
