VFL player review:

"Jack Trengove: I was really pleased with this kid since coming back to the team. I felt it was his best performance since coming back from injury. He had 30 possessions and three inside 50s and kicked two really classy goals. His stuff around the ball, his cleanness and contested work was really pleasing. I thought he was one of players who could’ve walked away from the game that showed really genuine effort. He was a four quarter player."

I'm thinking one more game like this one and that will be 3 BOG performances for Casey.

Surely he'll press for selection by then?

He just keeps getting in the bests for Casey and all the match reports seem to be singing the same tune: good ball use, attack on the footy, poise, and kicking goals.

For me, Trengove's return is the big story for 2016.  He represented so much hope for this club when we were floundering and he deserves to be there when it all finally comes back together for us.

 

My guess... Round 8 vs Bulldogs.

Looks like Jack may stil be a way off playing AFL.

Roos says he has asked Jack to let him know when he feels ready to play AFL and they will talk about areas to really work on.

It sounded a bit odd to me that Roos and co haven't indicated to Jack what he needs to do.  Probably just Roos hosing down expectations.

On the plus side he is getting good reviews at Casey so he may be getting close to saying he feels ready. 

It seems just a matter of time.

On his body of work so far, from a performance perspective, he's been one of the best and most consistent Scorps player and from an outsiders view you'd have to think he's close to being capable of withstanding senior football.

Mentally, I'm sure the more games he dominates at VFL will ensure a successful return to the firsts.

There's clearly no pressure on him and that's a good thing.

I'm extremely grateful to Roosy for the job he's done, but much of what he's said in the public domain of late has been confusing to say the least. His answers after the Saints game re Etihad, selection, where the game was lost etc, were very odd, and if taken at face value, a bit concerning. Frankly he has begun to sound detached. It hasn't been a fair criticism in the past but it's starting to show now.

I'm hoping Goodwin is more upfront and provides more clarity in what he says.

I think that is probably fair enough, the first goal for Jack is to get back playing footy, then having confidence in his footy and his body most of all, and then look at the specifics of what he needs to do for a spot in the ones. He isn't a first year player so he should know what to expect and therefore shouldn't need the guidance a young player would. Leave him be to do his thing until he knows he is right. 

If Roos is good at one thing it is managing people and personalities, he would have given this thought and he would think that this will be the best way to get the best from Jack.

I find that sensibility interesting. People are entitled to it... Personally, I put press conferences right at the bottom of my list of priorities when it comes to assessing a coach. If he uses management speak, I'm fine with that. Produce on the field, and everything else will be fine. I think 90% of the time coaches are just trying to deflect nonsense questions from the media. Many respect the media, or certain members, and that's fair enough too. Personally I don't really.

He already has been in the NAB post matches and other small interview grabs on game day.

He has an engaging demeanour and speaks well.

What I read from Roos comments is more about structure and Trengove knowing what his role will be. Once he is ready, then Roos can prepare him for what that role will look like. At present they are probably just letting Trengove play his natural game, find some of the pill, and derive some sort of enjoyment out of football. Admittedly I am only speculating.

Who cares what he says in public?

I don't take a thing Roos says at face value. 'We didn't pick the right team' sounds better than 'Winning this specific game isn't that important to us long term, so we were willing to sacrifice it to see what would happen if we backed our system in the whole game'. Not saying that's what happened but, if it is, that's what I'd prefer Roos to say at the end.

if Jack plays well the next 2 weeks I think they will bring him in against the lions at the mcg, well I hope anyway as it's the next game I am able to attend, can't wait to see him running out again

I think we probably need to remember the coach's changeover at the end of the year as well. These three blokes,  including Trengove, are pretty smart and know that this transition and what is following will be entirely the domain of the new coach and his refined game plan.

I didn't think he'd come back.I thought the injury would win. I didn't want it to but after many false starts from many players you could just envisage how this might unfold. I was resigned to it.  Trengove wasn't ... Kudos

I didn't however acknowledge the tenacity and ability  of this lad to persevere. The black dog can get the best of many yet hes  been able to continually lift above above it. Have no doubt some days were bad but his enthusiasm is infectious.

Yes Id love to see him back on the G and not even so much because hes a genuinely talented player but because Id like to witness him bask in that moment that embraces  " I DID IT"  What an amazing accomplishment that will be.

How many historic MFC players would have gaps of over 2 seasons between games? There would be a few I guess but I wouldn't have thought it would be a common occurrence.

 

(Note if Terlich sneaks in for his first game this season in round 20 he'll have done just that! )

We need people like Trenners around the club.
I must admit stating that those associated with the tanking era drafts of 2008 on wards as being a write off. For a large part, I still feel I was correct. Sure, Jack Watts shows a bit here and there and Max Gawn has really picked up his game but for everyone of those, there is always a Luke Tapscott, Sam Blease, James Strauss, Lucas Cook (and the list goes on) and to a lesser extent Jack Grimes, Colin Garland etc.
The latter two in that (incomplete) list were blokes I viewed as basically handyish players but not part of a core of a finals team. I also viewed them as people who basically were stuck in the mindset of years before; that they basically had to apologize fortaking the field to receive the floggings they inevitably got. I wasn't 100% sure but I was worried Trenners may have fallen into that group.
I now realize that we need blokes like Trenners; someone who has seen all the s*** the club has been through. Someone who can let their teammates now that sometimes the grass isn't greener on the other side and that you should never take things for granted.

Agree 100%.  The world needs more Jack Trengoves!  An absolute inspiration!

He deserves to make it back, and I really hope he finally not only gets to play at the highest level again, but I hope he manages to rise to the star status that we all believed he was capable of all those years ago when he began this journey.

Takes a lot to impress this cynical old war-horse these days.  But, I AM impressed!

The time to stick it up all the doubters is almost upon us, Jack!  Very, very happy for you!
