Phil Walsh found dead overnight

Sunday's game has been called off, with points to be shared between the two clubs.

AFL says it's not fair to expect the players to play given the circumstances.

I think they've made the right decision.

The round has already completed one game, You can't cancel the round.

They can't shift the grand final or the finals series. the logistics are incalculable.

They will more than likely postpone the game between the Crows and the Cats or the cats/crows may magnanimously accept 2 pts each instead of playing and stage a send off for Phil.

Only decision really.

You'd expect they'd have consulted with both clubs & given them reasonable time to work out what they wanted to do.

I think they probably did consult with the clubs.

I think they probably did consult with the clubs.

Gil said they'd spoken to every club and all were supportive.

They probably didn't have any other choice, but well done to Geelong on foregoing what could be an important 2 points in the context of their season.

Correct call.

Heartbreaking circumstances in what is a tragic event, regardless.

Footy is well and truly in the back seat for a man who loved the game as much as anyone.

Not sure if anyone mentioned it but would be good to see players not celebrating goals over the weekend as a mark of respect... We saw new zealand and west indies I think it was not celebrate any wickets or 50's/100's made after the passing of Phil Hughes, thought that was a nice gesture at the time

good idea jv7

maybe too, keep it on an ongoing basis

i'm getting sick of the over-the-top hype. reminds me of the block or the voice etc. it just has to keep getting bigger and bigger

Bugger that I say celebrate twice as hard.

Cut the other crap out, the fake tough guy stuff, the 'unsociable' crud. Play the ball, play hard, enjoy the game. That's what Walsh was about as a coach.

Maybe win lose or draw teams can walk off together and even share a drink or two together after the game.

Parricide is so incomprehensible to me.I'm feeling more and more shocked as the day goes on.I don't think I will be able to enjoy the football this weekend. My sympathy goes out to all who are mourning.

...

Let's see ... No staging for frees or trying to con the umpires. No ducking to force a high tackle. No appealing for deliberate OOB every time the other team puts it across the boundary, or for holding the ball every time an opponent is at bottom of the pack. No cheating with the third-man-up rule ...

Play the game as it should be played. Just spare a thought for the man and his family and friends

Sad day indeed

Hawks & Pies have said players will not run thru banners tonight as a show of respect.

But, I think once the first siren goes it will business as usual for them.

Having said that players/teams who know him will find a way to honour him.

Remember, when our Jim died two players carried his playing jumper.

Our game vs the Eagles may have players that want to show their respect as Mr Walsh was there for a number of years till 2013. The team may well decide or leave it up to each player so if it feels right for a player to make a show of respect after a goal or some other stage so be it.

It will be a poignant game for the Eagles players.

Just heard the winning club theme song will not be played at grounds after the games.

I am sure Geelong went with this with all the right intentions but I don't think they will be burdened by many "what if's " in taking the 2 points given their current form and playing over there.

Just heard Rob Chapman the crows speak. Hard for him receiving that phone call from the police then having to ring the leadership group to tell them there coach has been murdered. News reports were saying he has been stabbed to death but when you hear them say he was murdered for some reason that word just hits you differently.

The game on sunday had to be cancelled. Phil worked at geelong as well even though it was awhile ago but there is now way the players could run out on sunday and play. They wouldn't be able to go out there and focus for the whole time. I'm guessing the boys are going to be spending a lot of time together talking about things receiving counselling and basically supporting each other.

But its Phil's wife and daughter I feel for. His wife now has to deal with losing her husband in tragic circumstances and also coming to terms with her son doing what he did allegedly and a daughter has lost her dad and the relationship with her brother will never be the same.

Not to mention the son will assumedly get life in prison now

Walsh was a high profile figure - hence the media coverage. If he'd been say an Adelaide bricklayer and the same thing had happened, then we wouldn't have heard about it in Victoria. If any good is to come out of this, I hope it highlights the serious issue of family breakdown (for all sorts of reasons) that is happening in our society. Perhaps it will lead to some investigation of the ills that are festering in our midst and, maybe, some answers. I hope so. I don't have any.

Let's leave that up to the police and courts, eh. None of us know the full details, so too early to assume anything.

On a slightly different note, just watched Nathan Buckley on TV being interviewed about the Phil Walsh situation and its affect on the AFL.

His responses were measured, considered and appropriate. In truthfulness, I find him to be that way when interviewed each week on 360 with Roosy.

I am really impressed with him as a person and coach. Not something I thought I would say given how I perceived him as a player.

I haven't quoted from Fever Pitch for quite some time or given the book or the film much thought but today's events and the Collingwood/Hawthorn game reminded me of one of the key scenes in the film when news filters through regarding the Hillsborough tragedy.

Well, that's it, then.

That's what?

You can't go back now, can you?

'Course we will.

How can you?

Because...
because everyone else will.
Because the game will go on.
They'll even replay this one.
This doesn't change anything.

We're a strange lot.

Yes, me too, he is softening the loathing I have for the pies, but, then...the next time I hear about Eddie, and the natural order is reinstated.

On Phil Walsh, shocking and sickening news, and like everyone else, cannot begin to imagine the devastation his wife and daughter are experiencing.

I met one of the crows player's mum today. He had called her this morning, extremely upset, and asking her and his dad to come over as soon as they could. A little bit of insight, and I can understand how impossible it would be, for Sunday's match to go ahead

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
