Sandilands is a rare beast as far as ruckman or any AFL footballer goes. But in the ruck there are few that can compete against him other than Nic Nat.

A legit strat when up against Freo or the Coasters maybe. Against most other clubs I think u wld be throwing away a potential neutral outcome to give your opponent an unfair advantage, assuming they have a quality ruckman in their team and not a dud.

Spencer is a proven dud, cannot kick for nuts,Jamar is failing in the reserves,Gawn struggles,Fitzy has gone to hospital.Perhaps it is time for one or two of them to change postion. The blame solely lays with the head coach.

The Dees need more harden players and need to get rid of the schweler who does monday's analysis in Matty Brugen…….. Perhaps the Dees need to go back to their name of Fuschias.

Four players, two or three developing talks, inherited by Roos - of course it is all his fault.

Do you think Roos should be sacked ? Replaced by whom??

And please define schweler - couldn't find it in any dictionary or on line.

Enyaw what about Pedo in the ruck full time?

ENYAW .. thank the lord you float in now and again to provide your gems of wisdom to the [censored] on this board!! Unfortunately most don't appreciate the multilayered complexities of your posts. Keep up the good work!

This is along the lines of what Roos was doing with Frost before he got injured. He was a very mobile tall who put a lot of pressure on when the ball hit the ground.

We definitely don't need someone who just taps the ball, we need someone who is a presence around the ground and be a tall mid.

1st Ruck Watts

If he could hold his grabs around the ground and provide a presence but it's always if with Jack.

I wouldn't be against trying it, he played a little bit in the ruck when Craig was coaching and wasn't bad.

Posted

Need quality mids. You can always rove the opposition ruck taps. A few years back Hawthorn would just concede the ruck and Mitchell and co would rove to the opposition ruckman. A good ruckman is less important than good mids to read it and get it.

GET SOME GOOD MIDFIELDERS MELBOURNE FFS!!!

Had of Beveridge tagged Fyfe early instead of letting him roamed free, he wouldn't of had to innovate.

That being said, Fremantle are beatable when they don't use Sandilands to their advantage.

Moonshaow….. Pedo is 3cm shorter than Watts, would best serve as a zone ruckman. Budge…… Watts played in the ruck under fill in coach Neil Craig,he played well. The position is a confidence bootser,

Monoccular…… Schweler is a german word. I would have expected much more from Paul Roos, must start fast tracking the reserve, set players specific tasks so that they capable of stepping up. I am willing to expand on my theorem if there is a request.

At this stage of the year the Dees will end up bottom two.

What about Jetta in the ruck.

Watts to be the creative flanker off half back?

3cm shorter, but with far more ticker. Maybe worth giving Pedo a game as no 1 ruck against the Bulldogs, as they have worse ruck stocks than us, particularly with Minson in the 2's. Pedo has a big frame and decent core strength. Or maybe drop 'Sliding Dawes' and have pedo at CHF, Hogan out of the square.

Hard not to disagree with your last sentence.

You're all getting far too creative for Melbourne.

Come back in 3 years when the "play a mid-sized player in the ruck" innovation has been done and every team has gone back to a traditional ruck formula. That way we can try an old game plan style and continue on our merry way of being behind the ball as a [censored] team that tries to adapt to a game style 3 years too late.

Isn't Gawn the second tallest guy in the AFL? Why can't we develop him into our Sandilands (or at least train him to effectively ruck against him)?

Wayne, Wayne, Wayne this is like trying to find diamonds in pig shyt. Mainly pig shyt to date. Schweler, what does that mean? I tried a google search the best I could come up with schweler=wayne.

"Need more harden players?"

So based on the Dogs doing this once we don't need a ruckman? I doubt that if the dogs continually used this tactic it would work every week. Spencer and Jamar are pretty much useless and the best sides in the comp at the moment have a good ruck or ruck combo- Freo, West Coast, GWS, Crows. We desperately need a good ruckman and I'd be surprised if we don't go and get one this off-season.

Roos may not have created the ruck problem we currently face, but he certainly has done nothing to fix it. In fact, we are going to be stuck with Spencer next year because Roos inexplicably gave him a 2 year contract, presumably on the basis of an hour of decent football against Carlton last year.

Pedersen has been by far our most effective ruckman this year, and at this stage I would suggest that a Pedersen / Gawn combination is the only one worth with any medium term value. Both can have some impact up around the ground when rucking, and can contribute when resting up forward.

Jamar and Spencer are clearly not up to it, Fitzpatrick is not a ruckman, and King is many years away from being a factor. FFS even Cameron Wood is a better player than any ruckman on our list.

Sandilands has played since 2003.....That's 12 years......He has also played 216 games (At the start of this season)

It took him 3 or 4 years to get a game in the freo side who weren't that good.

Gawn has played since 2011.......That's 4 years......He has also played 26 games (At the start of this season)

Spencer has played since 2009.....That's 6 years....He has played 29 games(At the start of this season)

It takes a lot of time for ruckmen to mature (I don't know why but it just does) That's why ruckmen stay on lists which seams for ever

If we had persisted with Martin we would be gaining the benefits now.....It just takes time

You could put Howe in at the centre bounces to give him something to do.

I've always been interested in seeing how this would go. When he has a run up he'll use the other ruckman as a stepladder, and when he gets blocked, it should get a free kick for obstruction....

Rd 8 it would be interesting to see if Watts and Fitzy do the ruck work, Gawn to play in defence and Dunn at F.F,perhaps Gawn and Dunn position maybe too far fetched, nothing wrong with thinking outside the square!

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
