I had thought the point of this thread was to identify/predict which MFC players would have breakout seasons, not who will get recognition by the non-MFC world.

For instance, to my mind at least, Tyson (11 Brownlow votes) and Jetta (verging on AA form) had breakout seasons last year - and C&B is perhaps quite right in saying that they still get no recognition by the non-MFC world.

This thread is about predicting who will be this year's Jetta and Tyson.

And let's not forget that Pedersen was another to reinvent himself last year.

As far as this year goes (can't recall if I made any predictions earlier in this thread... so if I did I'll probably contradict myself), I think with the focus on fast decisive attack and if Watts spends more time forward, he will be one to have a breakout year. The other I think will be Salem who by the sound of it has found his niche playing back and through the midfield... but I also wouldn't discount JKH who helped set up a couple of goals against the doggies as well as get a couple off his own boot; with a less dysfunctional forward line this year, he may be Garletts new "Eddie Betts".

I agree with each of the players you have nominated and would also throw in Toumpas ( which hopefully will put an end to all the "we want Ollie" threads)!

Been burnt on this before but I honestly believe watts will be the breakout player. High half forward pushing up the ground and delivering the ball inside 50. 30 odd goals as cream on top. Despite the issues by far our most skilled and talented player. Will have a year like Gibbs did last year.

The mark he took to win the game against the doggies is a sign of things to come. He hasn't got much love for that mark but it was a ripper. Tricky wind. H was going for goal but miskicked it making it helicopter spin with a flat trajectory. Watts read it beautifully and clunked it

Agreed. Many of us say the same thing year after year and it doesn't happen BUT I'm saying it again.. he just has too much talent, smarts and athletic gifts for it not to come to fruition at some point. He turns 24 soon with 95 games - this is when he is supposed to be hitting his peak. It is of course no coincidence, as many have noted, that he finally looks like he has the body for it... of course, an improved structure of the side and a lift in general performance of the club will help it come to bear. After 7 years of development, I think we are going to start getting some serious return.

Viney's best is yet to come, and I think his best is going to be absolutely first rate in this competition. He has taken gradual steps since being drafted, and only stands to get better with each passing game.

I agree, he has it between the ears

Is Bail ever going to have a breakout year, last year he played 21 games which was his best for a season but only averaged 15 disposals a game....?

Bit hard to say this considering it hasn't even started.

Last year he was given the role of a shut down small forward. It's fair to say that with Garlett, JKH and Kent playing as small forwards in the NAB Cup, Bail won't have that role this year. Will struggle to be considered in the best 25, and that's excluding the 1st year players.

struggling to recall many, if any, good games out of Bail's 65

They must have just forgotten he was there if they haven't dropped him after 65 consecutive poor games.

Bail's a "bit player". Does the odd nice thing but commonly fades in games. Had an ok-ish year last season but I could easily see him being replaced by Garlett/Kent.

Maybe they are giving him a crack at breaking Brad Miller's record for most useless games

While to go yet

That's BS Curry. Brad Miller played around 150 games of top level footy. No superstar but an honest, tough contributor and a top clubman. He does not deserve to be dismissed in such an offhand manner.

I think he will to, needs to look at Jones game and how he became more effective. Aggression is great, knowing when to use it is better.

Jones is a good benchmark for him. I'm sure we all remember his early days where he'd grab the ball, break one tackle, break two and then get caught holding the ball. I used to think to myself that the kid had something, but he didn't have a clue when to accept this wasn't junior footy anymore. Well, he learnt and he learnt very well. I expect Viney will be the same.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

A few new faces joined our veteran Demonland Trackwatchers on a beautiful morning out at Gosch's Paddock for another Preseason Training Session. BLWNBA'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I arrived at around 1015 and the squad was already out on the track. The rehab group consisted of XL, McAdam, Melksham, Spargo and Sestan. Lever was also on restricted duties and appeared to be in runners.  The main group was doing end-to-end transition work in a simulated match situation. Ball mov

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. Windsor's run won't be lost playing off half back. In 19 games in 2024 he kicked 8 goals as a winger. I see him getting shots at g

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
