Swann's a cantankerous old fool who should get his own house in order before criticising others. If pick 5 isn't enough to get Beams, guess what? There's this magical thing called a trade market. What you do is call the teams with higher picks and offer them players in exchange for getting said higher picks, especially if you've made the inspired decision to poach contracted players from the most difficult trade table club in the league.

So how about you get back to worrying about important issues like, I don't know... fixing your club's $12m debt? Making the Lions remotely relevant? Maybe if you've got any spare brain cells after that you could even turn a profit like us, rather than be drip fed money by the AFL?*

PS: Next time your club sacks a coach, they should probably make sure the replacement wants to come coach you first. Must hurt knowing he chose us instead. :)

Greg Swann you moron, bet if he was in the same situation it'd be a different story. [censored].

Maybe he has got a point? I would rather see us get pick four for for Frawley rather than pick 3 and pick three should be allocated to us as a Priority Pick for only winning ten games over the last three years! Woops that pushes Brisbane back to pick 6; sorry Greg that's life!

p.s. Maybe Swannie might like to trade Rockliff to us for our Pick No. 2? (That would put him in the box seat to deal with Collingwood who have similar delusions.)

Swann is not ignorant of the rules but rather, is playing politics knowing that his own club benefits from us not getting band 1 compensation in the likely event of Frawley jumping ship.

If it was his own club that was about to lose a player who was being lured by a long term big money contract and the prospect of playing finals football, he would be singing a different tune.

Hypocrite.

Hawthorn got a pick after their first selection (18), because they were premiers. If it was St.Kilda it would be pick 2. I'm surprised Swann can get away with saying that about us - he is a tool.

If frawley isn't worth pick 3, then explain to me why 3 top 8 clubs have offered him significant dollars to come and play with them!

He is the top free agent, and the dees deserve top compensation!

His point about Franklin is bizarre. Following his logic lower teams should be less compensated because they finished lower and therefore their players are worth less?

Great call Greg. Let's all just become feeder clubs.

I can't wait to use his logic against him when they have a player available.

This sooking is coming from the guy who wanted to bring a live lion on the ground before games.

Good to see he is switched on the with the things that will take Brisbane forward.

Normally I would be at the front with you saying 'that's the rules' but the AFL makes this up as they go.

It's all PR and internal politics amongst the power clubs.

Swann is trying to pressure the AFL to free jazz us down to Pick 19 and I hope no one is listening at AFL House.

I am confident that we will get Pick 3 but only because of the Clark situation being an absolute embarrassment to the health of the competition that this is the easiest way to get us a 'PP' of sorts.

I listened to this yesterday and Barrett is clearly trying to drum it up to create a story and/or get public opinion against us. His line of questioning was hilarious "will you complain to the AFL if Melbourne get pick 3?" What a tool.

It also means Brisbane can only offer pick 5, not 4 for Beams which isn't a big drop but sounds much worse than it really is.

Ironic that this is in a thread about not understanding compensation. It wouldn't matter if he was a complete dud - if he fit the formula, we would get the same pick.

I'd be worried if he were still at collingwood.... But he isn't... Phew...lol..

We didn't make the rules on compensation for free agents and we definitely didn't develop Frawley for a top draft pick... We've been rejected a deserving PP two years in a row by the AFL and now Swan wants to delute our Frawley compensation? He's kidding right?

Posted

My only concern is that Franklin got a 9 year 1mil per year contract. Frawley goes to Cats its only 5 years at approx 500k per year. Does that equate to pick 3?

Posted

The afl is every chance to arbitrarily make it up as they go along and offer us mid first round compo before all the top 8 teams have their selections.

There's no such thing as a rule on the run that they DON'T like inventing as they go along.

Yep - it's the sort of borderline retarded logic we all have to put up from pissy Hawthorn supporters. Don't like your Franklin compensation? Try finishing last all the time. Early draft picks are nice but they are very little compensation for the pain of watching your team stink year after year. It must have really sucked, winning the flag that year that diluted your effing compensation.

My other worry is that Chip decides on the Hawks who have said they are interested but do not pay overs for anyone. It would be the ultimate kick in the guts if he went to the Dorks for much less on the hope of winning a premiership and in the process dropped to a tier 2!

Of course it is hypocritical but I don't have a problem with that.

I expect our club to jump up and down about issues that affect us at a certain point in time and then do a complete 180 when it doesn't suit us anymore.

I believe that Anzac day game should be shared between all clubs so we can all reap the benefits but I believe the Collingwood vs Melbourne on Queens Birthday is a tradition that should be left alone.

That's why ladder position is so important. Its debatable that how much of a loss Buddy actually was to the Hawks, they did win a premiership without him. A top team full of star players isn't going to suffer as much as a bottom team like us who have only a handful of star quality players. Losing arguably our best defender hurts us a lot more then Hawthorne losing Franklin. Same goes for any bottom 4 team losing a star player to free agency. Bottom teams get top picks and better free agent compensation.

Mahoney's come out this morning and said we're looking for a deal to bring in Merrett, No doubt the question will be asked of Brisbane and they'll say give us your compo pick 3 for Frawley if you get it. Thus declaring their KPD is worth draft pick 3, and that's not even using a dodgy AFL formula....

That's exactly the point, a top 4 team poaching an important player to a bottom 4 team prevents that team from having any chance of competing with the big boys unless they are given compensation that allows them the opportunity to either draft a great prospect or trade to bring in a star.

Of course Frawley isn't directly worthy of a pick at number 3, no club would give that up. But this system is in place to prevent the lower clubs from being down the bottom forever. Whereas a top team losing a star can have in place a great team around him that makes his loss mean less.

You want to blame someone Swann? Blame the clubs throwing the money at him, they're the ones pushing his value up.

I find it absolutely disgusting that Swann has come out and made these comments. They are only doing this to ensure their pick 4 doesn't fall to five so they can secure Beams (Even though pick 4 is not even CLOSE to being worth it for Beams). He is purposely trying to hamstring Melbourne for their own gain whilst using Beam's Dads illness as leverage in order to bring in a player with a trade that is significantly under value for his caliber.

Let's be honest, if Beams were on the open market, it would require two first rounders to secure him. Would Brisbane give up Rockliff for pick four? No. If you want to bring in a player of that quality, you need to trade a player of that quality.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
