James Gwilt

Recommended Posts

Certainly hope not.....

He gets plenty of the ball , because opposition sides want him to have it over other defenders. They know he will turn it over more times than not.

As opposed to Turlich, TMac, Chip, Grimes, etc? Gwilt's disposal and decision making is better than their's IMO.

I mentioned Gwilt as an alternative to Lumumba in the Lumumba thread. They are the same age and have very similar stats from last year. While both have faults if you where going to pick one I'd much rather take Gwilt as a DFA than trade for HL.

Gwilt was only delisted to bring some youth into StK back 6. Richardson mentioned that with Fisher, Dempster Delaney Gilbert Geary all playing back he need make room for a younger player.

He just didn't want to explicitly say that Gwilt is complete garbage.

It seems to me that just as Roos has said any of our players are tradeable, he is prepared to talk to anyone who may be on the move. I like the idea that he is talking to anyone possibly on the move, simply because that means he is informed as can be when it comes to making actual decisions about trades and so forth.

I think folks have lost a little perspective as to how our progress will occur. It wont be one giant leap into a finals team , it will be a path via decent recycleds mixed with better drafting

i.e Not from A .....to D

but A >. B > C > D its a process not an instant cure

We are already a D bub

I think you mean we need to go from a D to an A

Lol these posters who say next or pass over each name as they come up. We are the laughing stock of the AFL with a terrible rebounding defence full of turn over merchants. Not saying I want Gwilt necessarily, don't know enough about him, but I fully back Roos and team to look at every possibility. If they go for Gwilt, there must be something in him that'll improve our list going forward.

Agreed. Almost ANYONE that we can get will basically improve us.

Is this the same James Gwilt who several media pundits have described as "the game has passed him by"?

And are these the same media pundits who regularly get mocked on these very forums for their lack of knowledge?

Gwilt isn't so much a rebounding defender as an undersized KPB or 3rd up defender. He isn't quick and doesn't have great kicking skills. He is a decent mark and a long kick but I don't see him improving our rebound, which is what we really need.

We do not have the $$ and are not an attractive enough destination for A grade players, Roos at the Swans pulled together a premiership team from a lot of refuse and ordinary players. I expect him to continue to look for value in the players that are available and look for guys who play the part he wants them to play. I am sure he and the recruiting team will look at everyone, look at their stats, clips of their game style, etc to ensure they do not over look a diamond in the rough that may fit into our team. I have every confidence that they will be trying to bring in experienced players who will help lift Melbourne next year and the year after, etc....

When a defender is delisted from the Saints who have no defenders, it probably says something about the quality of the player I would have thought

we're talking St Kilda....they make very VERY odd decisions!!!

From what I remember of him, took a long while to get cemented in the side but once he did was very good, especially in their best years.

Things seem to have gone backwards rapidly for him, why?

I've watched a fair few st Kilda games as my uncle played for the saints back in the VFL back in the day. Whenever I venture down to Melbourne I usually head to a game with him, I've always liked this guy, he's just a good honest defender, can mark and makes smart decisions such as spoils, third man up. Let's be honest he's not a world better but he's better then a few getting a game now. My old man and uncle have always said, You need to not only build your senior team but also your reserves, it creates competition and keeps your good players honest at training. We'll pick him up for nothing, I'm all for it, if Roo's can turn Pedo around in one season lets hope he does that to a few more.

    FROZEN by Whispering Jack

Who would have thought?    Collingwood had a depleted side with several star players out injured, Max Gawn was in stellar form, Christian Petracca at the top of his game and Simon Goodwin was about to pull off a masterstroke in setting Alex Neal-Bullen onto him to do a fantastic job in subduing the Magpies' best player. Goody had his charges primed to respond robustly to the challenge of turning around their disappointing performance against Fremantle in Alice Springs. And if not that, t

    BOILED LOLLIES by The Oracle

In the space of a month Melbourne has gone from chocolates to boiled lollies in terms of its standing as a candidate for the AFL premiership.  The club faces its moment of truth against a badly bruised up Collingwood at the MCG. A win will give it some respite but even then, it won’t be regarded particularly well being against an opponent carrying the burden of an injured playing list. A loss would be a disaster. The Demons have gone from a six/two win/loss ratio and a strong percentag

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an
