Good news.

Tommy Mac should turn out to be an A grade KPP defender - with a few decent disposers alongside him he should be even better.

Re Barry - Roos believes, and I believe in Roos, so good on him. Roos is NOT going to give anyone in whom he has little or no faith a new 2Y contract - hell, look at Jetta: only thought enough of him to offer a rookie spot though maybe it was a psychological taunt to Nev.

One could read from this that Roos may well expect that Dom has more to offer than Nev did at this time last year - if that turns out true well we will have a very good player virtually coming from nowhere.

I reckon Barry could become a fantastic tagger, he's not afraid of the tough stuff, has great pace and imagine the dees winning the ball, and barry sprinting into space off his opponent, he would be a handful for his opponent and demand respect, I can see him become a massive component to our team

I haven't seen a Casey game. Seen him in two AFL matches and honestly can't comment either way - didn't do anything that stamped him as a player of the future like Salem has.

For that reason happy if the FD is happy that we signed him and will keep my powder dry on how he will go in the future until i have seen a lot more.

Best news all day!

McDonald is showing improvement each and every year. Without question he is an excellent "defender" and it is pleasing to see his disposal efficiency slowly improving.

As for Barry, I personally have never really rated him but certainly think it's the right decision. These smaller, less contested outside runners often take longer to develop physically. By the recent reports it appears he has been putting the right foot forward and certainly warrants his contract extension.

I only hope both continue to progress and improve so that in time they establish themselves as starting 22 players within the strong Melbourne Demons team.

Dunn, tick.

Kent, tick.

TMac, tick.

Watts, tick.

Barry, tick

Frawley, er, um............

Dunn - maybe other clubs interested

Kent/Barr - anyone else interested ?

Watts - Carlton apparently interested

Tmac - sure there would have been some interest

Frawley - apparently 10 clubs have inquired - this will probably be his biggest contract.

I honestly think he is gone - but this is the way of the future on FA - lots of players will sign earlier - equally as many will wait until seasons end - unfortunately the majority ( not all) of the ones that wait until post season move on. So whilst Frawleys delay doesnt mean he is definitely gone the odds are not forever in our favor.

He can't officially be on the senior list for 2015 until we pick him as part of the national draft with a later pick (4th of 5th rounder)

Sorry if this is old ground but does that mean someone else can nab him with an earlier pick?

So from what I can remember Watts, Barry and TMac have contracts that expire when Roos 3 yr term is up.

Not sure of any other players contract which expire at the end of Roos term but IMO if we r still struggling in a couple of yrs we are in big trouble, as players will definitely not be hanging around (hence players signing on to coincide with Roos contract ending).

For the love of god and for my sanity I hope we are not still struggling in a couple of yrs.

IMO we will not be in the eight by then.

With a little luck we might be around 9 or 10 on the ladder is the best I can see.

You might need to line up some valium for 2016 DemonOx

Yes. It rarely happens but if another club wants him then they can do it... I think... Unless a club nominates him as a promoted rookie prior to the draft. Someone else might know a bit more than that.

God old dee I am hoping for close to finals if not playing finals next season.

Better have the rum and valium ready for 2016.

So far I have relied on rum alone but when u have too much of a good thing your body becomes immune to it and 8 years is a looonnnggg time!

I share your displeasure at the time length we have been the pits.

However if you just consider the 2014 list and our results then it comes up IMO that we are now competitive.

That is all it says to me.

It is going to take two more trade periods to get above competitive.

Sad but that is our lot.

it's easy to forget that Tom is only 21. He's done amazingly well to hold his spot in a backline under so much pressure. A really good signing and hopefully he will be a Dee for life. Can't understand the knockers.

I knock anyone who cant kick......sorry its called Footy... We all grow up with it and I expect..NO...demand that anyone playing at AFL level for the mighty Dees be able to kick effeciently and effectively during a game. I mean,, really, is it that much of an ask ??

Well done both.

Re Barry......is Dean Towers any good? A high enough draft pick for the swans two years ago and hasn't played a game until named this week. As I heard him named on the radio I just assumed another strong bodied mid would come in and do a job for them.......can't wait till we think of our own players this way.

If we nominate him as a promoted rookie, then other clubs can't nab him, and he'll become our 'last' draft pick.

Edit: And in response to the original question on this: no, you don't wait until draft day, you tell him your plans for him well in advance, so he is able to nominate for the draft if he doesn't like what you're putting on the table. As far as I know, the promoted rookies don't actually nominate for the draft at all.

Several clubs were very interested in Watts, including Carlton and Adelaide.

Spoke to a Freo Coterie member last weekend, and he said Freo were literally doing cartwheels last year because they thought they'd land him. Pity for them though - Watts is actually a committed Demon. He just needed some hope - and it came walking in the door at the right moment in the form of Mr Paul Roos.

I want to see Watts, Vince and McDonald in the leadership group next year.

No. Rookies don't need to nominate for the draft to be upgraded, and as such other clubs don't have access to them. Also we don't need to nominate him until draft day. Of course, there would have to be some sort of agreement in place between the club and the Jetta, otherwise he would almost certainly have to put his name in the draft, but that doesn't need to be public to the best of my knowledge. Also, we wouldn't have to nominate a specific pick for him. As long as we have room on our list we can use a pick to upgrade him during the main draft.

lock 'em in Edd...I mean  PJ

The list takes a bit more shape. Well done to both

lol... I wouldn't be surprised to find out that Eddie gets a say in every list... Who knows the true powers of the stronger clubs?

Both fantastic pieces of news.

For McDonald, it's both relief and excitement at locking in one of our most promising and important players.

For Barry, it's mainly anticipation at what's to come. Obviously he's done something right this year, and probably in particular the last fortnight, so good on him.

Posted

More good news for the club and great to see the faith shown in the direction we are headed by the players.

If I'm being greedy I would have liked to see McDonald sign for another year or two but I really can't complain too much!

long contracts aren't good for some kids. it can sometimes stall their development.

I'm happy he's resigned, & dom as well.

Given how far back Barry is coming from, it's a vote of approval from the club. He has minimal football experience, and a couple of years gives both him and the club the time that's needed.

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
