I don't see any problem with this suspension. If Dawes had been on the receiving end I would've expected 1-2 weeks... it was a deliberate strike to the face. Softish, but that is a clear example of unneccesary contact to the head.

It wasn't a deliberate strike. Deliberate strikes are made with elbows and fist and involve proper footwork. Dawes was up for the smother (yes a Melbourne player smothers) and then only Dawes would really know if he planned to go for the head/neck or if he was aiming to push with his forearm (a similar motion knocked Jaensch out of a game v Adel) in to the body.

Personally I think there was enough doubt to grade it negligent not reckless, but I can live with the reckless grading.

What confuses me is the 'medium impact'. Surely the impact has to take in to account the rest of the play not just that Rance was shook up a bit. You've already cited Dawes for striking to the head, if it was such low force it wouldn't have been a reportable offense to begin with. So now that you've got that covered you should expect Rance to have copped a bit of a hit and to take a while to get up. Which he does and then plays out the game with no ill effects.

It was a crude play. But it wasn't the kind of dirty play that needed a suspension to clean up the game or provide guidance to junior and local leagues. Not compared to Deledio and Chapman's elbows.

Which part of the classification do you disagree with? If you take it to the tribunal, you will have to challenge one or more of the aspects of the classification. We would just be asking for the 1 week to become 2. If we challenge and lose (and we will lose, if we challenge), that is when I'll be absolutely livid.

The fact that they got the Deledio one wrong doesn't make this one wrong. Intentional or not, it should not be okay for a player's arm to make contact with a player's face to the point where he is dazed. An action does not have to be malicious or "dirty" for it to also be wrong.

For the record - Dawes has ZERO carryover points. They expire after 12 months, which means his conveniently expired last round.

Personally, I think the "Medium impact" is outrageously excessive. He should have been offered 1 week down to zero with a guilty plea.

Unfortunately it is not worth the risk to challenge, so we'll just cop the week.

While I don't think he should go for it, it was stupid, so I wouldn't take the risk challenging it unless no weeks can be added on.

I'll look at this another way.. Dawes is injury prone (or has been to date), maybe it's a little blessing in that he gets two weeks off from game day loads (although i guess it could be argued the Bye does the same thing).

Medium impact is the interesting call - richmond must have put in a great medical report for it to be termed that..

There are grounds for challenging in that verdict. I would be looking at two aspects. Firstly, calling it a striking incident is clearly false. I don't know if it makes a difference or not to the end result, but what Deledio did is a strike. Dawes is at worst rough conduct.

Secondly, they have called it Medium impact. While the player played it up at the time, he was unaffected, played out the game and will not have any ongoing issues, so clearly it should be a low impact.

That being said, I don't think it is worth a challenge. The tribunal is notoriously reluctant to dismiss charges and if (when) they returned a guilty verdict it would lead to a two match suspension. I doubt they would accept a plea of "no case to answer" or "this charge is bloody stupid."

Yeah it was captured at the time it happened (not sure if shown on a replay) during the Fox coverage. Not much in it, Tyson didn't do much more than grab his chin but still it was a deliberate elbow to the head of an opponent during a stop in play - surely that is worse than a careless forearm to the head during the play but noones said boo about it.

Everyone's up in arms here. I'm not happy about it, but not unhappy either. The head is sacrosanct, and what Dawes did, was just stupidity. The extra week off might make him realise that. Not the worst timing to get the extra week off either.

He'll miss the clash against Port, even with him, we wouldn't be much of a chance. He doesn't have to face the arduous task of recovery from playing the NT game, he gets extra hungry to face the filth and is cherry ripe to go.

A fair penalty for a stupid act. For all the hysteria about bumping causing injury, this was always an accepted part of the game. What Dawes did never has been.
