AFL NATIONAL DRAFT - Pick 9

What

Recommended Posts

Mahoney's comment was along the lines of being very pleased about replenishing our midfield while remaining in the top 10 in the draft. Furthermore, we're getting tight on list spots, and if we trade out 9 our first pick will be at 40. I expect a whole lot of sitting on our hands for the last week of trade week. Our job here is done.

I wonder if we'll look at Taylor Adams with 9.

We could back ourselves in now we have Tyson aboard.

Going by Mahoney's comments today the club were keen to stay inside the top 10, which says to me they won't be doing anything but using that pick in the draft. Mahoney actually commented on SEN that we wouldn't be doing anymore business with GWS.

Doesn't mean we wouldn't do anything if something pretty special came up, but I think Pick 9 is a 99% chance of staying with us.

That may include upgraded rookies though. So if we were to upgrade Clisby, we'd only need to draft 2 players. Obviously pick 9 and then our next pick (40?).

Add Hogan and only need to draft one player or upgrade one more. We will draft at least 2 players.

I hope we can do some deals to upgrade our selections and make room using Jamar, Jetta, Bail, Tapscott, Strauss and maybe a couple of others or come to an arrangement to retire to Casey as playing assistant coach, come on down Shannon.

On 3AW earlier tonight Mahoney said there were 3 players we were looking at within the realms of pick 2 and thought there was a good chance that at least one would slip to pick 9.

We won't be getting first choice, but we'll get a player we're happy with.

My pick 9 options...

Nathan Freeman

Sandringham Dragons, 181cm, 85kg, 16/6/95

A strong-bodied midfielder who fiercely attacks the ball and contest. Real pace and has also shown a tendency to push forward and hit the scoreboard.

Jack Billings

Oakleigh Chargers, 183cm, 78kg, 18/8/95

Billings is a smart and skilful half-forward with elite foot skills and a strong overhead mark. Composed and creates as much as delivers.

Marcus Bontempelli

Northern Knights, 191cm, 83kg, 24/11/95

The athletic utility suited to the modern game. Bontempelli is tall enough to hold down a key position, and runs and jumps at marking contests like one, but can also push up the field and is good at ground level. Has been starring for school side Marcellin College.

Matt Crouch

North Ballarat Rebels, 181cm, 77kg, 21/4/95

Probably the best inside midfielder of the draft. Crouch digs into contests, rips the ball out and feeds it off, and has improved his outside play.

Luke Dunstan

Woodville-West Torrens, 184cm, 81kg, 29/1/95

A strong and physical midfielder who thrives on the contested situation. The South Australian has a presence around the ball and swings onto his left foot with ease.

Christian Salem

Sandringham Dragons, 183cm, 82kg, 15/7/95

A smooth-moving and classy left-footed midfielder. Has a damaging kick and often sets up play as the linkman through the middle of the ground. Solid build.

Can guarantee whoever we pick at 9 will be sold to the supporters with the "We would have taken him at 2" line come draft day. Hopefully we really do get our man.

Dunstan seems perfect for our needs but the media and "group think" followers don't seem to rate him that highly. I will admit I've never seen Dunstan play live so take with grain of salt.

An absolute gun that was dropped to the SANFL this year and has stagnated.

Adelaide were in complete turmoil this year. Do you count Scott Thompson as a gun? because he also got dropped this year.

He is a gun and if you're keen on challenging me on this first watch some Adelaide games and watch him play and than come back and tell me that "he isnt a gun"

Yes, Scott Thompson is a gun. He played every game for the Crows this year (unless you want to count their bye) and didn't get dropped: not sure where you pulled that from. He was also playing most of the year with groin issues. You obviously have a loose interpretation of 'gun'.

Actually, yes you are right. he was a late in for one them and got subbed 3 times, my mistake.

Emma Quayle just said she expects us to take Ben Lennon at pick 9

Anyone know much about this kid?

I always thought Emma Quayle was an extremely good judge of talent.

Check this out:-

Recruiters want to see 'head first' Lennon in the midfield

Wow. Just what we need. A specialist 188cm HFF who kicks lots of goals, is a possession accumulator, and wants to develop an engine so he can play in the midfield, and is quick.

Sounds like Sam Bleese with grunt, who can kick long and accurately, great mark, and who can defend. Could be the perfect pick up. Sounds great.

I guess that's why after his latest garbage I heard on wednesday no one mentioned it on here because no one listens to him. He was enjoying teaming up with a geee-long supporter ("they only support no 13 and come on number 12 at Melbourne you know) and after this guy said he must get a lot of flack from Melbourne supporters he said yeah but they're only Melbourne supporters. What a waste of space he is.

Actually, yes you are right. he was a late in for one them and got subbed 3 times, my mistake.

No he wasnt, he never got dropped and only subbed twice. Stop making up stuff..

And Mckay is nowhere near pick nine material. Thats laughable.

I am basing this on nothing but my gut tells me if freeman is there at 9 we take him (I think he will be gone) if he is gone we trams sheed. Best mates with hogan ready to go at afl level will be the o.wines of this draft and the main thing is he is best mates with hogan

As someone who has seen a lot of the Northern Knights the last few seasons, I'd HAPPILY take either of Lennon or Bontempelli at Pick #9.

- Both of them can play inside and outside.

- Both have brilliant skills (Lennon probably slightly ahead due to his longer range kicking, but Bontempelli is no mug in this area either).

- Both can take a strong grab (Bontempelli probably ahead in this regard, and has more scope for improvement due to him still growing), and

- Both can rest up forward and kick a goal.

Not that it matters on the ground... but both are bloody good kids too.

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

    TRAINING: Monday 29th April 2024

Demonland Trackwatcher Kev Martin was on hand at Gosch's Paddock for Monday's training session and made the following observations. About 38 to 40  players down at training.  BBB walking laps.  Charlie Spargo still in rehab, doing short run throughs.  Christian Salem has full kit on and doing individual work with a trainer. He is is starting to get into some sprints. I cannot see Andy Moniz-Wakefield out there. Jack Viney and Kade Chandler have broken away from the

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f
