Just read that there's no compo for mid first round pick, so sub 14 (end first round) for 26ish

Its first-round pick; the next level is an end-of-first-round pick; the third category is a second-round choice; the fourth is an end-of-second-round pick, and the last bracket is a third-round pic.

Even at worse if Beamer, Riv, (Bate?) where classified in the 5th bracket which is 3rd round picks, the three 3rd round picks would have to add up to a 2nd round pick.

Another thing in melb favour is due to our 3rd bottom finish a 2^nd round choice is only 3 picks off an end of first round choice

I have been brainstorming for a few weeks about how it would all work, and while I was right about a 'points' system being involved - we should not worry about it and try and improve our team.

We might be hanging out for Pick 5 or we might be hanging out for Pick 50. Let's just improve our team and let the comp fall where it falls.

I suppose we may as well discuss the FA compo picks as the origin of this thread seems dead.

Its ofter the way whereby people with a sniff want the whole cheese.

The purpose o FA agency is to restore some right/determination to the individual as to their place of employ. Keep in ind this was

borne out of the AFLPA. It was the players wanting to redress the lack of ( in their eyes) power in bargaining process especially later on in their careers.

In many respects this really isnt about the clubs themselves though in order for it to proceed there had to be some form of compensation allocated, but its not really about the compensation its about players being able to negotiate and move in an unrestrained manner.

Some might argue that the club already gets a form of relief in that they get salary cap back again. Thats true but its not really a compensation its more of a resulting situation , rather than by design

No one actually knows the formula for all of this and as been mentioned ( often now ) the actual pick is based upon the resultant loss to any club. i.e Losses - Gains. Obviously nett gains carry no compensation nor do they carry a penalty. Again it might be argued a pseudo penalty of sorts is the added burden to any club in their cap in order to accommodate the newly acquired FA's

I have a suspicion there will be a weighting, a handicapping , in effect of any of these compo picks The League would need to be mindful of not diluting the value of existing picks, especially first round ones As such I reckon the highest any compo pick will get is to be tagged to the end of the first round and then allocated downwards there after

As such I think even if our nett loss was Beamer and Rivers then we might get an end of rnd 2 as our solace.

What is the value of a B&F finish in a rubbish side? It doesn't mean anything. I would absolutely staggered if we were given a first round pick for these two, especially if it came after our first round selection. I just can't see it happening.

I would say the value is exactly the same as that of a B&F in a top side as far as this system is concerned. There is no way to measure how they would have polled in another side, so the only thing they can use is how they went in our side. If you forget about your own opinion of the player and look at the numbers available for use in the Great Mysterious Hidden Formula they both have to have value. Rives was a second round pick, rising star, repeat top five in the B&F and one of our highest paid players. Beamer was traded for no. 12, has polled well in the brownlow, won a B&F and is again in the upper bracket for wages at the club. All of these are factors which can be used to determine a value for the player. While it could be argued that the clubs ladder position can also be factored in, it would be supremely counterproductive to do so as it would be giving a massive advantage to the clubs already at the top.

Ditto. As much as I'd love it, if Rivers and Moloney added up to one golden pick then the system is buggered. It will (or should) be two middle of the road picks.

Perhaps it should be two middle of the road picks, but the system they are using assigns one pick based on the overall loss of players, not individual picks based on their value. In aggregate we are talking about the two best players at the club in the 2011 season. Tell me what the two best players of any other club in the league are worth in compensation, even if they have since been passed by some younger models. We're talking Boak and Tregove for PA. Ablett and Bock for Gold Coast. Boyd and Murphy for the Bulldogs.

Added to these two we also have the value of any other players who leave us. Bate was a first round pick. If he goes, that is added to the pot as well.

This is the basis for my assumptions above. The formula has to be based on the value of the players to the club they are leaving. As such, while many regard our players as being crap, worthless or any other negative terminology they care to use, in terms of the AFL's formula they have value, and we can use that if we are willing. The first tier compensation is a pick immediately following our first round pick, and that is a carrot worth aiming for, especially given the relatively weak fodder on offer during this FA period.

Which brings us back to the OP. How highly do we rate Lynch? What would you offer for him in trade? If it's not a first round pick then we don't want him, because that is effectively what we are giving up by chasing him as a free agent. Personally, I would be reluctant to give up a second round pick for him in trade, so for me the only reason to move on him would be if I assumed we were going to get the bottom tier of compensation and a third round pick in return for our losses. Given the points I have already made, I can't see any real value in chasing him as a Free agent, and the same goes for the other players on offer.

I would assume the players new contract would also play a big part. So Goddard on $800K/year would be worth much more than Rivers on $350K/year or Moloney on $250K/year or both of them combined. The fact that these guys had high finishes in the B&F will be a very minor factor in determining the compensation we get. Again I would be absolutely shocked if we got anything higher than a pick in the late 20's or 30's.

The HUN has announced that West coast Quinten Lynch has signed a two year deal with the Pies. The HUN believes Lynch's signing all but erases the possibility of the Magpies luring Adelaide defector Kurt Tippett.

So now where to for Tippett?

Apparently Melbourne also made a strong pitch for Lynch but once again came up short.

Also rumoured Geelong midfielder Shannon Byrnes is set to sign with Melbourne.
