James Sellar - good pickup

But he looks at home down back and I like how he is a good kick and cool head with ball in hand. You could not say that about Warnock or any of our current defenders.

Anyway I doubt the children will be rushing to get the #30 on their back, but good sides have room for a J. Sellar. For a pick in the 50s I reckon we have done well.

All he needed was a bit of confidence, he was getting to the ball early on in the year but wasn't holding his marks all it took was a couple of grabs and a bit of self belief. Thank God he didn't read this site he would have retired about 10 weeks ago.

I'm not the biggest fan, but having him has added some good flexibility and helped player development.

Having him down back has allowed Rivers to go forward (and smile on the field for the first time ever) and Garlo.

Once Patton went off he went forward to cover for Clark.

And goes in the ruck.

I like Sellar down back. He has the size and height to play on the KPF. He may not have the talent of a Frawley, Rivers or Garland, but he matches up better to negate the Gorilla's. With McDonald and Frawley as his patners in crime, he looks good. IMO he has better foot skills than Rivers too.

Should only get better as a forward in a better side. You know what you'll get with him in the ruck which is someone who will compete around the ground but its down back he looks the most comfortable. Big body who can spoil, pick up the ball really well and use the ball calmly.

I still hold plans for Tom McDonald to go forward as his marking and work rate make him a good CHF option and if that's the case then Sellar can certainly be a nice CHB to play on big boys whilst Rivers and Frawley take the other talls.

If they plan to use him as a ruck/forward option then he has a fair way to go but in reality he can bust a pack to bring the ball to ground and certainly will come up against worst back up ruck types. Its funny that one of his coaches is Leigh Brown and when you look at Collingwood now with Dawes hardly setting the world on fire as ruck/forward and Wood still struggling you think they wouldn't say no to Sellar as a Leroy Brown v2.0

Another AFL preseason should see him get that little bit fitter and stronger compared to an interrupted one which will hopefully give him a boost to his game.

Martin is the Anti-Sellar, he does things Sellar can't do but doesn't do the things Sellar does consistently. There's a spot for Martin as back up ruck and for Sellar as CHB even in the best 22 if they push out McDonald/Macdonald/Garland as a forward/Rivers as a forward so they aren't necessarily direct comparisons but if its one for the other I think I know who Neeld would favour.

He was very impressive when he moved into the ruck and started to provide a running link-up option through the middle of the ground. It's something I hadn't seen from him before, and the role suited him.

there is a role for his type of player, and he is slowly finding his feet

i think he would of got alot of confidence from the way he played vs essendon.

IMO recruiting Sellar provides just another example of Neeld identifying deficiencies in our list, and then seeking to plug holes where needed.

Sellar, at pick 54 (or whatever), has been a great pick up.

Perhaps we all need to reappraise our KPP fixation

Players now appear to need to be more flexible

With forwards needing defensive skills and defenders being swung into forward and midfield roles with attack and run so important to be able to cater for injuries or match up or just poor form the mix and match combinations seem to be what coaches are looking for.

The game has progressed and the MFC squad appears well placed to be at the forefront with that style of player.

Could be a good call. He definitely allows flexibility forward or back or as DA said in ruck. Prefer to see more. I think we could definitely see better from him with more maturity, strength and looks a confident type when going well.

Talking about picks in the 50 's what about Tom McDonald- will turn out a beauty.

We have been lucky with McDonald and Sellar down back, Frawley is struggling this year. Sellar to me is one of those players that just needs his role simple. We need Martin back, Sellar to hold down a Key defender role, Clark to stay out of the ruck.

Sellar's improvement has come from keeping his game plan simple.

"See ball, punch ball"

Very much in the Josh Gibson mould.

Rivers had to play this role for a long time but just didnt have that extra bulk that Sellar has.

Now that Riverlenko (......you beauty....) is snagging a few up forward, creates room for this type of specific role and looks like Sellar is responding nicely.

Our disaster start has forced a remix that might go on to produce some serious fruits. Garland & Rivers forward is loaded with positive potential. Sellars & Tom Mac getting their opportunity might do similar.

If Gawn comes back in full flight & Clark does not kill himself, we might be have a powerful talls crew to take into 2013.

Meanwhile we have to learn to kick PROPERLY!!

We might also turn out to be the biggest trader in 2012. Bennell, Morton, Sylvia, Dunn, Petterd, Jurrah & Davey, plus our two 'Scully compo picks' might get us to a couple of homesick younger gun middies especially from GWS & Suns.

Just superb when he went into the ruck. We finally started to get clearances because he hit the ball clear instead of down at the feet of the pack.

Nice to have him as a pinch hitter, able to fill roles down back, in the middle and next we will probably see him up forward if Neelds form is anything to go by........

Bennell and Petterd would have to be gone I reckon, they're fringe now at best.

Bate, Sylvia and Morton would be on the edge but only the latter two have real value so I think the Master's position on the list will be safe.

Dunn, Jurrah and Davey aren't going anywhere. Dunny has his downsides but he is a proven goal-kicker, has pace, and does not take a backward step. You need guys like this in reserve.

Moloney could finally be serious trade bait though.
