According to the news over here, Hogan and Lewis both struck their opponents (fair enough) however Scott Thompson's elbow made contact with Dangerfield's head. FM 

Are you sure it wasn't Dangerfield's head that struck Thompson's elbow?

Whilst most of us have no issue with a suspension these medical reports are rubbish.

WTF is delayed concussion..... Concussion that increases the penalty for the MRP but doesn't have the player taken off for the game, if Rowe doesn't miss next week then what is his injury? A headache and nausea are the exact same symptoms for dehydration.

Even the hairline fracture to the jaw... whilst this would have had to be supported by an Xray (I would hope) when Cripps doesn't rub the spot or have any medical attention after the incident you can't wonder if it could of happened anywhere in the game.  

 

The penalties should be 3 weeks and 2 weeks if either player doesn't play this week and 2 and 1 if they are play this week as CFC have exaggerating the injuries.

I agree with most observations on here.  It is the inconsistency of the MRP which is in question here.  Both Hogan and Lewis perpetrated stupid acts, no doubt.  However, the nature by which the MRP review the facts is at best arbitrary.  How can any reasonable person come to the conclusion which they have apparently come to,without a thorough examination of the facts?  To simply decide based on video evidence is ridiculous and dubious medical reports is a travesty, which results in impacting on a professional sportsman's livelihood.  There is no way you can determine the level of impact and severity by remotely observing the incidents concerned.  Will Cripps play this week?  Will Rowe be subject to the concussion rules?  Remains to be seen obviously, but I would venture to suggest that the medical reports provided, which were clearly designed to provide a direct correlation between incident and injury, resulted in the severity of the penalties handed out.  Without them, the penalties would have been less in my opinion.

I can think of no other examination of so-called facts, which is done in such a manner, without a thorough testing of the evidence.

The CFC's doctor report emphasised the seriousness of Hogan's actions on Sam Rowe by reporting that the victim had delayed concussion, dizziness and nausea. 

Therefore, I'd be shocked if Rowe plays this week. Concussion is a serious issue these days and it would be irresponsible of the Carlton Football Club to trot him out against Essendon this Sunday.

Surely the Doc wouldn't have added some 'mayo' onto his report.

Exactly.

If Rowe plays this week, I don't know how you could deem the incident "medium" impact - if he plays this week, there was no impact to his minutes on the field at all.

Apparently based on the Geelong doctor's report it was deemed to be low impact.  As Caro said the Carlton doctors 'did not mince words' in their report to the MRP.  So Hogan and Lewis deemed to be medium impact.

It is all in the doctors wording, emphasis and the language.  eg Carlton doctors could have said something like: Rowe was nauseous and dizzy after the game but we could not confidently say it was a result of the Hogan incident in the 3rd qtr. ...Factual but doubt implied about the cause. Enough doubt to have it ruled low impact attracting a lower penalty?

In isolation it is what it is.

However when you see other incidents that are not cited or penalties that are paltry in comparison ( the Thompson elbow) you are just left absolutely scratching your head. The inconsistency in application is so dizzying that I can't even begin to guess what the MRP will and won't do.

This is not woe is me as I believe in "do the crime do the time" but we do seem to end up with the rough end of the pineapple.

No they wont. How can the club prove the doctor lied or over embellished his report? The severity of the suspensions are based on his report.

Forgive my arrogance but we should beat both Fremantle and Richmond with or without those 2. So no need to risk having them out any longer. We would only be able to get them down to low impact at best which means they would still be out against Geelong, so what's the point? Risk far outways reward.

Edit: On that note, there really needs to be a facility for the club to got to the tribunal saying "we accept Jesse has done wrong and have no doubt he deserves suspension, however we also believe that labeling it as medium impact is too much". Why saying that deserves an extra week is beyond me. MRP is essentially blackmailing everyone into accepting whatever they offer.

Inconsistant penalties and rulings by the AFL are the norm now. Dumb actions both Hogan and Lewis nevertheless. Was pleased to see Watts and Hunt fly the flag in the melee after Lewis' hit

I reckon Lewis was injured earlier in the game. He spent quite some time on the bench at one stage. He seemed to be playing hurt to me. I suggest that he would have missed this week in any case. If the umpires were doing their job Jessie would have received a free for Rowe's blocking (with his back to the play) of his intended lead before he lashed out. It had been going on for the whole game. How many umpires does it take to change a light bulb?

It was just announced on Perth ABC radio that "the AFL will announce later today if the MFC will contest the charges against Hogan and Lewis."

Based on that, clearly the club is considering it - maybe just the severity?

Even if you accept that Hogan's was a dumb response to provocation his penalty is way out of order and another example of how the MRP system is a mess.

Scott Thompson elbows - elbows! - another player in the head as that player is lying on the ground. Anyone in their right mind knows if you hit someone in the head while they are on the ground the head has nowhere to go and damage will be maximised. And Thompson gets one week while Hogan cops two for a blow that had no weight in it at all? 

Total, unadulterated BS.

As for Carlton ramping up the odds in their medical report, we know where this goes - a 100 point flogging next time out and ratting on any of theirs who act up.

Well I hope they are made to work extra hard on the track and when they watch in the stands they realise the impact they have left on the team by not being out there. As I have said Lewis doesn't bother me as much because we can cover him in as quality player like vince but Hogan up forward is going to be a massive loss. He has been marking it beautifully lately. 

anyway we move on now and I'm sure Goodwin and his assistants will come up with good replacement options.

Almost everyone has said what they did was dumb and deserve suspension. But to say you couldn't care less about  MRP inconsistencies is just ridiculous.  I don't suppose you'd say the same if they were rubbed out for 6 game and another incident where someone was carried off unconcious after being dliberately kicked in the head just got a fine.  Discussing the MRP's notorious inconsistencies is perfectly legitimate.  While accepting the bans, I hope the MFC says something in private whenever appropriate.
