  1. Realistically we have to assume he is a fair way off AFL standard, even with development, as evidenced by 2 clubs passing on him as a father/son, or even rookie. We have given him a chance to show he has the ability and work ethic, but as good as having a son of the Wiz on our list would be for the fans, it is a waste of a spot, if he simply isn’t good enough and but for his name would be nowhere near an AFL club list. That would cost us a potential player who we could have taken instead. There are plenty of father/sons out there who are simply not good enough, or have other passions, so clearly the pedigree alone can’t determine spots on our list. Here’s hoping though for Kobe!

  2. Just listening to Angus's mum on ABC Grandstand. What a terrific person. Raised 4 boys, 3 to elite level sport and with them all out of the nest has taken in Luke J, Kossie and Trent Rivers into their home. An inspiration.

  3. Prime example would be David Neitz. I reckon in the 2nd half of his career he turned his training mentality to become one of the aggressive power forwards of the game. Would crash packs and go in to bat for his teammates. Russell Robertson and Jeff Farmer have been on record to say they always walked taller when big Neita was around the area. Weid lacks that. In fact I doubt there would be any defenders in the league that fear playing on him. Weideman is a nice fella, but its time to get some ruthless and aggression in his game if he needs to take the next step forward.

  4. Troy Broadbridge passed away on this day in 2004, on the Phi Phi Islands, Thailand, one of 227,898 victims of the Boxing Day Indian Ocean Earthquake and Tsunami. Never forgotten.

  5. Murray would surely be the only bloke who played a game of league footy on Saturday arvo and then wrestled at Festival Hall that night

  6. They need to scrap all these zones, what a joke. A retrograde step because clubs started to complain about the northern academies. Rather than fix it they exacerbate the problem.

  7. Troy was just becoming a regular coming off the half back flank and back pocket at times. Played 40 games by the time he was 24 and had cemented his place in the side. In 2004 played in an AFL elimination final against Essendon which they lost and also a VFL Premiership in the same year. Married December 18 2004 and died 26 December 2004. So much happened to Troy that year from the very highs to the very lows and he certainly didn't deserve his ending in life. Such a tragedy. RIP Troy you will be forever remembered by many of the supporters at the MFC . IMV and many others at the club You are a Demon life.

  8. Brown played angry. Weideman has (imo) played his most impactful footy when he attacks the ball like he hates it. Need to reduce the gaps between those performances to become the player he should.

  9. If you’ve got 5 mins of holiday time this is well worth a watch. Brown is one of my all time favourite non Melbourne players

  10. I actually really love the fact he wears his helmet mainly for his mum. The studies done on wearing helmets show minimal (if any) assistance to persistent concussion issues, but he wears it because he knows his mum worries.

  13. Mark Brayshaw played for North Melbourne and Claremont aprox 142 games in Total and Mark's father Ian Brayshaw was an all rounder playing cricket for WA and was an excellent player captained WA and played over 100 first class matches. however did not play for Australia. Ian Brayshaw is father of Mark and James who is a former State cricketer. A commentator for Afl footyball on radio and TV. Mark has 4 sons 3 play AFL footy and Angus Brayshaw is his son. Now that is an elite sports family. Debra Brayshaw has an elite sports family in her life and bet she keeps them level headed.

  14. I rate your footy acumen Deespencer but with Weideman you seem to be able to see things in his game that I’m unable to. The recruitment of Brown you were dead against and went as far to say it will send Weideman back to the VFL. If it’s only a couple of uncontested grabs and half a goal between becoming one of the best forwards or battling at Casey - what am I missing?

  15. Banner worthy I think. The brayshaws have opened up their home to many Melbourne recruits

  16. Jackson only signed a 1 year extension...the usual is 2 years which is what Rivers & Kossy signed... My point in regard to this is similar to yours, we win games & players stay. Jackson taking a year put's him in the undecided category.

  19. 1. A lot of ego involved I would think. If Weid comes on Brown looks brilliant. Brown is media not coaching, so it can boost his profile if it goes well. 2. He has been developed and coached. 2018 no one would have thought this was needed. Now, something different might make an impact. Sometimes going too early with this stuff can confuse a player. Now without a specific full forward as coach, this is a cheap way to get good ideas into his head, give him a confidante. He also has the experience of Ben Brown to work with, too.

  20. How good would it be to see the Wiz's kid running around in the Red & Blue taking a few spekkies and kicking goals from all angles, come on Kobe here is your chance to bring a Farmer back to the Dee's. My middle daughter cried when the Wizz departed, come to think of it the whole family may have.

  21. As previously mentioned I am incredibly excited about the Demons recruiting Mark "Choco" Williams. He may be a bit eccentric but he is a brilliant coach and teacher. To have him as head of development will be fantastic. For those those who have some spare time over the Christmas holidays I highly recommend checking out Mark's "winning teams" YouTube channel found here: https://youtube.com/channel/UCdqLn6TslJwdR70ojbTXAUQ Having Mark teach players like Max Gawn, Angus Brayshaw, Clayton Oliver, Bayley Fritsch, and of course, Christian Petracca how to kick correctly in play and for goal will do massive wonders for the Demons. This won't be a quick change, but given time, say over 18 months, we should see the results of Mark "Choco" Williams helping to develop the kicking abilities of our players at the Melbourne Football Club. I highly recommend any Melbourne supporters, who get a chance to, go down to Demons training at Casey Fields (or Gosch's Paddock) and say a friendly welcome to Mark "Choco" Williams. I will try and do so myself when training resumes. Welcome to the Melbourne Football Club Mark "Choco" Williams! ?

  22. I am a bit late to this discussion but I thought I should give my 2 cents worth. This is something that needs to certainly be pursued by us as Demons supporters. We cannot let this fall down the memory hole of the AFL. It is vital that Melbourne Football Club Chairman Glen Bartlett follows up on this in relation to the Demons getting compensation for any loss of our NT Academy zone. Especially as this gives the Gold Coast Suns an unfair advantage obtaining the Darwin Indigenous zone. Outgoing Magpies President Eddie McGuire (love him or hate him) would be screaming blue murder if Collingwood lost any of their recruiting zones! We at the Demons need to do the same. Personally I would like the Demons to be given a recruiting zone in North-West Tasmania around Burnie where Russell Robertson used to come from but I am unsure how likely that is. As far as I know Tasmania is currently spilt up between the Kangaroos and the Hawks. Either way, the Demons should definitely make sure if we are losing a recruitment zone in Northern Territory that we are given an ideal recruitment zone for compensation.

  23. I'll never forget Broady; I'll never forget his memorial game. I doubt that there was a dry Melbourne eye during the opening ceremony at the packed MCG. Melbourne could never have been beaten that night. Broady's spirit was always with us; I'll never forget the great work that our Club / players did to rebuild a school in the Phi Phi Islands in Broady's memory.

  24. "Probably at a point of my carer where I really need to step up now" Yep. I wasn't one of the posters who thought he was going to come on in leaps and bounds after 2018, but he is 12 months behind where I think he should be. Hope the pressure isn't getting too much for him. Hopefully Ben Brown will take a heap of pressure off of him and he can settle into his natural game. Hoping for Sammy to play 20 games this year and have 25+ goals.

  28. Great news. It seems the Club is being very proactive in sorting out some of the lingering issues that have stalled our progress. We have a reasonable draw and a healthy list so hopefully onwards and upwards.

  30. This is just not a very smart post. If Goody gets the sack next year it means we will have failed. That puts us back in rebuild territory as you can guarantee players like Oliver, Petracca and Jackson will be looking to move on. The happy outcome would be for Goody to prove most wrong and turn out to be a master premiership winning coach. That is unless it's more important for you to be proved right than us getting success.

  31. Mark Williams has a background in teaching and in footy. A footy teacher is always what we need. I have heard glowing reports on his manner with players and I have seen up close his understanding of our great game and what it means to players and supporters. A wise choice. I look forward to watching his pupils improve and excel.

  33. All teams need good people to help out when youngsters are brought into a club. Mother (and father?) Brayshaw certainly fit that bill. All of their boys seem like genuinely nice fellas, and that is a direct reflection on the parents. It is a very good thing that they have opened their doors to our new generation of players. Thank you Brayshaws....

  34. Troy was clearly a top bloke. And had a great career ahead of him. His best match (final v Essendon?) was sadly his last. As another poster pointed out the memorial match was incredibly moving. RIP ...

  37. I hope Kobe Farmer trains well and is doing extra skills and running during his Christmas holidays. If he does well enough he will earn a spot on our list. I definitely would like the son of "the wizard" Jeff Farmer running around playing for the Demons again. Jeff was an excitement machine and I always felt we missed our opportunity to win a Premiership when he left the Demons. Losing Jeff was a far bigger loss than we expected at the time. His son needs to be talented enough though.

  43. When I was at the MFC the players were listed at heights that were not only incorrect but under there actual height because they were never measured again from the time they were recruited making match ups difficult for the other clubs, only there weight was measured.
