I say we win the last 8 and hit the finals at speed..............My dream is to beat Collingwood in round 23 and in the first week of the finals. Then roll the Bombers in a semi and Carlton in a Prelim. Then roll the Swans in the GF with Gawn giving Grundy a Masterclass and Oliver winning the Norm Smith.....Seriously folks could footy life get any better than that?20 points

Fristch is 5th for AFL goals since 2020 in the entire league! and he is not even a tall fwd! and he is a Casey VFL upgrade One of our true success stories13 points

Of the 13,000-odd players who’ve played AFL/VFL, he tops the poll for having the winning-est career of those having played 100 games or more: 81.05%. Saw him at a local cafe last year, sporting his Demon cap. Nice man.12 points

Now bring up the fact; that because of Maynard’s staging, the MRO has sanctioned a player and that player fooled the umpire into awarding a free kick. Interesting to note that the AFL media shut down the staging story completely and not one of the weekend or Monday shows mentioned it. One guy, for a lesser stage of just putting his hand to his head, gets humiliated, vilified and called a cheat over and over again on every media outlet and the other guy, once again, just walks away and gets on with his life.11 points

Trappers 2nd and 3rd quarters in the Semi Finals vs Adelaide in 2002 were something else10 points

Wow, the man barely knew what a loss was! May he continue his winning ways at the G in the sky, and hopefully watch us return to such comprehensive dominance very soon :-) RIP8 points

Agree but I'm channelling my 1987 experience here. I see the team building belief over next 2 weeks. Then a roll starts and ends who knows where. I saw what they can do and are capable in first 3 quarters last week. Thus the hope. We'll know soon enough8 points

Immensely talented. Still to this day there isn't a Melbourne player I've come across that could absolutely drill a low flat 40m pass on either footy with ease. He was laconic as they come but God when he was on he could seriously player. If you ever get the chance ask David Neitz and Russell Robertson what they thought of trapper. Their eyes would light up when he had ball in hand.8 points

His record at the MCG is even more remarkable. He played there 66 times for 58 wins, two draws and just six losses.7 points

I’ve changed on this, at the time l thought it was a football act, now he’s broken Jarrod’s Witts vertebrae, this is beyond the joke, he’s a dud but so eloquent the footy world forgives without mention If it was May he would’ve been lynched by the AFL & media maggots Sick of this [censored], the AFL is rigged6 points

I was fortunate enough to have a 30 minute convo with Clyde at a granny breakfast a few years ago. What a lovely man. And a Demon through and through. Goody had just taken over from Roosy and he was very bullish on the Dees. Really knew his football - good footy brain as they say. He also loved Brasso like a brother and said our success in the 50's and 60's had much to do with Ron's drive and desire to win at all costs. He also loved Norm. Roost 'em from the Smoker's stand flank Clyde - and may the umpshires wave two flags in your direction forever more. Lov ya Man.6 points

Seriously people are the worst. I understand if you have no money, but resorting to stealing from a fundraiser is downright putrid behaviour. Akin to stealing a Bunning sausage from a girl scout. I bet he was a Pies fan who got lost5 points

Oh, it's almost too much to consider getting another David Schwartz or Johnstone. It would answer a thousand prayers across the years. At his pre-injuries prime - even during those difficult post-traumatic days from recoveries - Schwartz was a glorious football talent, achiever, match-winner, commanding respect from anyone who ever watched football with an informed interest. Travis was also a supreme talent with skills and effects unmatched by most top-line players. My mind is suddenly swelled with recollections of some of the never-to-be-repeated things that these great blokes did onfield with the Dees. Just take a look at their highlights reels ... for refreshment.5 points

The glass half full response to that would be that we played one of our better games for the year without Gawn dominating. Mostly this year our best games have been driven by Gawn, so to play well when he’s not starring is probably a good thing.5 points

Wait for the AFL to justify a NT team - despite the insanity of a team playing in the Darwin heat and humidity all season (even with some Alice games) - on the basis of "with the Tasmanian team we will have an unbalanced number necessitating byes and nobody wants that. 10 rounds a week - gosh, Thursday nights will be a permanent thing, and probably Monday nights too. Is that OK Fox and 7??" Talk about killing the goose that laid the golden egg. Of course the talent pool will be further diluted, and the cesspool from which they find maggots will have to be even deeper, despite the FACT that they cannot get enough half competent umpires already. At least 4 more required. But we can't afford 21st Century goal line camera technology. I love the Demons. I despise the AFL as an organisation.5 points

I pick both IF the 'slight push', like the jabs in the guts, didn't happen there would be no free. I really hope that one of their annual rule changes this off season, in fact their only one, is to make it very clear that every punch to the guts, to or from whomever, is an offence that starts at one week for a first offence. Yes, for every player and every team. I guess nothing will happen until a Collingwood or Carlton player gets his spleen ruptured - yes, it can and does happen sometimes from an unexpected and undefended gut punch. It is cowardly and designed to gain an unfair advantage even if for only a moment. The "Legendary" Brett Harvey specialised in it, then squealed when he received retaliation, sometimes leading to a report and suspension. Clarry is the receiver more often than most as it puts him at least momentarily out of the contest. Bernie Vince once went down and actually vomited and had to leave the field (can't remember the offender off hand but I am sure someone here will remember). Yet these inane commentators call it "a love tap". What a pack of Neanderthals.5 points

Having closely studied MFC over the past couple of years I'm convinced that they have become the most predictable team in the AFL. By this I mean that the majority of other teams have Melbourne worked out and have implemented successful opposing strategies and tactics. An example of predictable patterns are as follows: 1. Jake Lever deciding to take on his opponent on foot, only to get caught holding the ball. 2. Getting the ball inside the opposition 50 regularly, only to fail at achieving a goal. 3. Defence, defence, defence 4. The Harrison Petty forward experiment. 5. Inconsistent hot and cold form of individual players (Chandler, Turner, Petty) 5. Overrated players (Fritsch). The writing on the wall was no more clearly demonstrated than that timid loss to West Coast Eagles in Perth. Contrast that against a hungry up and coming Hawthorn who not only went to Perth to take on WCE but came away with a performance of a team going somewhere, which MFC sadly isn't. Goodwin and his backroom staff are average at best4 points

TL;DR We need to review the rule of contesting the ball in the air, with the perspective of banning hitting players in the back or the back of the head, making it an instant free kick and, if the player gets injured, a reportable offense. As a lifelong fan of the game, and a former player in the MPNFL in the 90s, my connection to AFL runs deep. Even after migrating to the USA 4 years ago, I make it a point to watch every game. However, the physical distance has given me a new perspective, allowing me to reflect on the game without the constant AFL noise that used to dominate my life. Let me be clear, this is not a post aimed at condemning Moore. As a former player, I understand the strategies and techniques using knees in contest that are part of the game. Bringing your knee up when jumping into a contest was part of our training, a strategy to protect ourselves and to hit the player in front. Ideally, it was to knock them down, and if injury occurred, it was seen as a bonus. I have not written this as a knee jerk to the Trac injury that occurred during the game. I know it is a legal move. But now we have a player with broken ribs and internal injuries and it is the second time this has happened this year - the first was Mays injury. While this is bad, the more serious side is the knee in the back of the head, which is still allowed. Hitting anyone in the back of the head is dangerous; with a knee (or elbow/fist) done at speed, it can cause concussion and long-term have all the effects that we are all too familiar with in the loss of Brayshaw. The NFL in the USA banned the use of the knee in aerial contests (say between a Wide Receiver and a defensive player like a Safety) due to the high risk of injury and an illegal attempt to interfere with a legitimate aerial contest. It is now time for the AFL to reconsider the rules around aerial contests for the ball, including center ball-ups, and ban bringing the knee up to protect players. This change will prolong the careers of ruckmen and also prevent head injuries. In the case of someone standing under a hospital pass getting cleaned up, it should be an instantly reportable offense, given the high risk of serious injury to a player. Last point: while I acknowledge some will decry such a rule as "softening" the game and the inevitable death of "the hanger," I would rather see the game evolve (which it has done for 150 years) to protect players and prolong careers. Changing this rule will still allow taking a mark on someone's back; you just cannot hit them with an outstretched knee. You must use your shin, and just like in tackling and bumps, you have a duty of care to your opponent. Do it wrong, and you pay the penalty.4 points

IMO Pendlebury’s on Neale was worth a week, Neale was looking at the ball up and wasn’t expecting contact when St Pendles whacked him in the guts - cheap shot, 1 week. Maynard goes to Long and punches him in the arm, Long open hands him in the chest - don’t think that’s a week with or without the acting. They’re both front on and Maynard should’ve expected to get one back as he gave one first.4 points

That is not a stupid idea. You can go for a mark without using the knee, as basketballers do when jumping for the ball. It is something that should be looked at.4 points

Probably as many as our pathetic club got between 2007-2014. Don't forget that apart from the priority picks in 2008 and 2009 we were also basically given Peter Jackson and Paul Roos by the AFL and the AFL also ensured that the Frawley trade gave us pick 3.3 points

Sorry if someone has already corrected this but 22 & under players last weekend: - Kolt - AMW - Woey (did play) - Brown - Turner - Rivers - Windsor - McVee - JVR = 9 total & Bowser who was in squad, as was Jeffo = 11 THANK YOU @binman for reading the AFL.COM article re our running capacity remaining elite — Anyone who can’t see what’s happening re younger core and the mix being 3-4 out on ideal total 21-22 under players is just in my eyes.. a bit silly! We have 2-4 too many kids playing at present given phase we’re in and our explosiveness is slightly down for one reason — HP!!!!!!3 points

Answers LOTS of questions. Good stuff. From the Club, too, and nothing 'cagey' or 'vested' that I can see. Liked the double positive of Melky's on-field return and Tracc taking his field-side place. (Also relieved to here him saying 'Bella' instead of the awkward repeated 'my fiancée' in the AFL360 'interview' (I use the term parenthetically advisedly...)3 points

I think his foot has been playing up all year. Haven’t hear anything but I suspect that is the case with how often he is been in the rehab group, wearing slippers to training etc.3 points

The rules were changed after that incident. We are comparing May to Maynard which was worse and more acting over May just putting hands on head for a second. Maynard stayed down holding his head. It got a player sanctioned and drew an unwarranted free. May is sanctioned, humiliated by the media and called a cheat by a senior journalist. Maynard cops nothing from the MRO or the media and is home laughing again.3 points

His best football is clearly very good, but we have barely seen it for three years. In some ways he has actually become a liability because his talent has demanded selection in a struggling team when he clearly hasn't been fit enough to contribute. His safety first approach also doesn't help our efforts to move the ball quickly, although he may have helped us to retain possession in the fourth quarter on Friday.3 points
