The idea that people punch on at soccer games because there's not enough scoring could be the dumbest sporting theory ever floated.8 points

Brodie, Schache and some of the other boys are down at Gosch's right now, practising their goal kicking! (This news is brought to you by Brodie's insta stories)7 points

I think they will be copying Geelong with Blicavs and Stanley where Max takes the ruck and heads to CHB while Grundy rucks around the ground - his mobility is very good.7 points

Tomahawk is known for his ability to take on the forward pocket ruck duels for the Cats and for initiating or kicking goals as a result. His strike rate is excellent and I'm not talking about the same form of striking that you're thinking about. JvR did help out in the ruck this year at Casey but the fact that he's doing it at preseason training against the likes of G & G suggests that he might be called upon to do that this year - hopefully at the higher level. I wouldn't be expecting TMac to do any ruckwork because of the history he has with his foot.6 points

I care, I want Freo to finish stone cold motherless last in 2023 so that in addition to another flag we get the number one draft pick! 🤪🤪🤪5 points

Good to see Schache is leaving no stone unturned in his pursuit to fight for his career.5 points

I think we have different ideas of what “doing a Tomahawk” is. For me it’s sniping players faces with your elbow and pushing opponents in the back. Are we hoping Schache or JVR will do this or are you thinking of something else? 😈😈5 points

LATEST VERSION AS OF OCTOBER 31 ************************************************************************************************** Original Post (Nov 2022): Re the chart: Senior draftees added: Jefferson and Adams as Senior List players. A - rookie draftees added: Sestan and Verrall Games played has been updated. Chandler is now officially a senior player. A new addition to the chart is the 2023 draft picks of which we have 2 x F1 and 2 x F2. Time to death ride Freo all the way in 2023. !!! Assuming the 2022 mix of Senior/A-rookie players, we have no senior spots and 1 A-rookie spots. However the club can change this mix to what is allowed if it wants to add a senior player eg a DFA ala Dunstan last year. Otherwise we keep the 1 A-rookie spots for the SSP and mid season draft or not fill our quota of 42 players. Quite a talented list of potential 'Milestone' games in the 2023 H & A season: 200: Hibberd, May, Gawn, Grundy 150: Neal Bullen, Harmes, Langdon, Lever, Salem, Brayshaw, Oliver 100: Spargo If 150 games is the 'sweet spot' for an AFL player at their peak, we are there!! In terms of 2023 contract renewals the potential outcomes are: Retirements: Hibberd, Melksham Non-renewals: Dunstan Trades if requested: Jordon, Neal Bullen. Note: Both are Unrestricted FA's so they could go to a club of their choice and we take the AFL compensation pick. New contracts for most of the other players, particularly Rivers. The special one is Kozzie's signature, hopefully sooner than later for 4 years ie his FA year (or longer) but would settle for 2 years. The 2022 Contracts thread can be found here:3 points

Haven’t read all the comments. A few point. Soccer is the most popular game in the world simply its easy to get started, just kick a round ball, toddlers do that, and can be played anywhere, in the street outside. Popular does not always make something the best, music proves that :) Plus history of European control introduced the game in lots of places, then has come the huge money for a tiny minority of players. Crowds, in many places like the UK, soccer replaced tribal warfare (Competition between towns etc) between different groups, the second and I think the most important is the make up the crowds. This has been studied by European soccer and they can’t find a solution. Most AFL crowds are generally 50/50 male/female and it also includes lots of kids, soccer is not. This creates a totally different atmosphere and expectation. Until this aspect changes across leagues the problems like this will appear from time to time As for those that went onto the pitch, what if they banned them from all levels of soccer involvement for life that includes junior footy. I reckon that would have more impact on behaviour than just banning them from the A-leguae. Plus it removes their attitude from the development years. From what I heard on TV, it was supposed to be a walkout at 20minutes to protest the finals being held in Sydney.3 points

Or a sticker saying - MFC - winning flags every year since 2021 Or perhaps one that says - Question: is it possible for a club to win three flags in 14 months? Answer: bang, bang, bang - yes if the club is the MFC!3 points

Who the hell are the other 37? I hate these lists, in fact it is my 73rd least favourite list, currently 🙂3 points

I think it's important to note that the ruck duels that both JVR and Schache were given the daunting task of going up against Gawn and Grundy were boundary throw in drills. Despite the fact that these throw ins were initiated from the back flack area the tutelage was no doubt for the work they will have to do in the forward pocket against A and B grade rucks. TMac and Brown were not involved in these same drills. No doubt JVR and Schache are initially being given the Weid role and will work up from there.3 points

Maxy, a living legend ... great leader. I had a strong impression earlier, having read his book at the end of the Premiership achievement, that he really cares about the team, its individual components, and sets examples and marques of behaviour, and thereby, links components of the MFC to these standards. All these matters are achieved with humility, thoughtful care and observable benchmarks. The team has only benefitted from his extensive inputs and examples.3 points

I'm a Melbourne Victory member and a Melbourne Demons member. Not going to enter the "soccer is boring" discourse, it's a subjective topic, i love it, some don't. I was at the game on the weekend, what happened was appalling and is rightly being condemned and MV will be punished as they should. I've witnessed violence in the stands at multiple sporting codes (A-League, AFL, Tennis etc) but this was different and it's heartbreaking as a lover of the game and sport in general to be honest.3 points

The reason Geelong are so disliked is because the AFL for years have not enforced their own rules. Duckwood created a whole generation of duckers, arm raisers and knee droppers that were continually rewarded. Fortunately there seems to be some addressing of it this year, despite the persecution 'outcry' with Ginnivan. But it is a mess the AFL created through neglect. Unfortunately the blatant back shoves that Tomahawk does are laughingly described as 'strength' and don't get penalised. No other team I can think of has had 2 players who have got away with football murder for 15 years. Fortunately one has now gone and the other is surely one or two years maximum away from retirement. Maybe then we'll have a level playing field.2 points

The other things the dogs have in their favour is the pressure of song the 2021 bigly won't be such a mill stone around their neck. And you'd hope for their sakes bevo clams his farm and they avoid the own goals that impacted the start of their 2022 season. I'm really curious to see if bevo changes their game plan they way Scott did, and adopt a territory model. Their flick it around, fast transition of the hb model isn't going to win them another flag IMO. As much as he is a bit out there, i rate bevo as coach and wont be shocked if he makes some big changes to how they play.2 points

Love the interview. What’s going on with the pronunciation of “Petracca”, we saw Christian mouth “it’s Pet-rah-ca FFS” at the Brownlow but in this interview Max says “Petracka” about 30 times. Is he baiting him?2 points

Of the 6 premiership players OOC this year the one I'm keen to see signed is Kozzie. My guess is: May will get a short extension likely on less $ Hibberd will most likely reitire Jordon is an UFA so can look for opportunities elsewhere and probably will if he doesn't get regular game time. ANB plays an important role but at some point we need to develop someone that can replace him Rivers is important but we have others to step in. While it would be good to keep the premiership list together, I feel some need to move on to refresh the team and make room for those pushing for selection at Casey. imv we would be fine if any of the last four or even all four, moved on. On the bright side none of them would be re-contracted on big $ so the sal cap isn't really an issue on keeping them. Kozzie is the one!2 points

Fingers crossed that Kozzie does not replicate the Jacko saga that we had to endure last year. Please re - sign (had to be careful typing that one) sooner than later.……same goes for Rivers…..and May!2 points

Agree Monbon what a man, he is very smart, deep and aware. I love his honesty and desire to help build and maintain a safe workplace for all teammates and to live to the four core values that the club is built on.!!!!2 points

I’m a sports enthusiast. I can pass the time watching most sports other than some obscure Olympic sports like curling. Baseball is another that I can’t get into. seems odd to be grousing on a sport if you don’t like it. When it comes to soccer I think people are threatened by it. It’s the world game and with proper oversight can grow much bigger in Australia. It won’t displace AFL, there is room for both in my opinion.2 points

Oh dear. I dislike bad policy settings where government interference in the market rewards passive rent-seeking while actually discouraging enterprise and productivity improvement. I guess your ridiculous comment is kind of right in a way; I instinctively don't like it when people are given money for no reason except that they already had some. If that is the same as 'success' and 'make' to you, then okay.2 points

Hmm, you're quite right. I've accidentally added in income that doesn't relate specifically to the sale price. My old 'mental note' that I was drawing on was the total net income from a $1m portfolio at 80% borrow-to-invest, purchased late 90s and then put to market 2022. So that figure includes the net revenue from rent greater than costs over the period. The original comparison made (not the one in this thread) was of that hypothetical portfolio vs a full-time worker over the same 25 year period, where the portfolio kept pace then pulled ahead. I tripped up here because in casual footy-forum mode I noticed the coincidence of the totals ($10m from $1m, being ahead of FT earning) and didn't think about it further. So, I amend my comments, and will go full verbose for the sake of precision; The Oldfield Mansion has appreciated significantly more than the general market over the reference period, such that Mr Oldfield has derived a capital gain from his dwelling (less the spending on improvements) comparable to that which would have been earned by a purely investment portfolio generating both capital gains and tenanted revenue. Either scenario represents a net income or capital gains of greater than a full-time minimum wage over the same period. Now, tongue back in cheek; Each of these scenarios implies that civilization is facing impending collapse as society splits into a division of those with so much passive, rent-seeking capital that they are unmotivated to invest in genuine enterprises, and those who are so certainly excluded from capital accumulation that they are unmotivated to excel or advance in their occupation, resulting in a gradual stagnation of productivity of both labour force and capital formation, with an exquisitely ironic resemblance to the dysfunctional control economy of the Soviet system, i.e. "They pretend to pay us so we pretend to work."2 points

For what it is worth, a $1m 'ordinary' portfolio of housing assets purchased in 1997 without improvement would by now have appreciated in price by even more than our mate Fred's little mansion. The relationship between Australian housing prices and the differential access to and pricing of finance based on explicitly 'class' benchmarks enabling existing property owners to increase their paper assets, gain profit based on speculation in a tax-favoured environment while displacing all risk to tenants and to government is a textbook case study of 19th century theories of accelerating division of worker and owner into mutually hostile groups in an unfettered market system. Hence, I made a little joke about proletarian revolution. Also, calm your farm. Saying you're not a class driven person while going into thin-skinned snappy mode at an imagined slight upon your honour as a tall poppy is not very dignified.2 points

Appears as if the Ammo's B section Grand Final had more akin to World Championship Mud Wrestling than amateur Aussie rules. Old Haileybury's premiership triumph continues the club's rise through the ranks under Daniel Ward's tutelage. Stefan Martin hasn't pulled on the boots again post his AFL retirement but Jack Lonie (ex-saints) did. Young Kye Turner does get a number of mentions in dispatches. Watching this space with interest.2 points

This obsession needs to stop. Yes we want to have an all in one purpose built facility, but anyone who has been to Casey knows that it is a good solid facility which is getting a massive facelift thanks to a local government keen to grow and develop the area. Our players are hardly turning up to a rat infested Junction Oval and sharing a single dumbbell between them. Likewise AAMI Park has his advantages as we get to share some IP with other sporting codes. There is nothing terrible about our facilities set up at the moment. We won a flag with these facilities, so it's certainly not hindered our success. The reality is that players live far and wide. For some Casey is convenient (certainly it's quicker to get to from the Peninsula than getting into the city), for others it is not. Such is life. Very few people live 10 minutes away from their job.1 point
