  3. I think the legend of LJ and the 3rd qtr of the grand final is well and truly overstated I’m not suggesting he isn’t a talent - he is but the 3rd qtr was all about our midfield he did handball to Clarry for one goal but having watched it several times it was all about Trac , Clarry and Viney imo

  4. Maybe but it highlights his strength and why he’s valued so highly. His ability at ground level for a player that size is rare. We have only seen glimpses of it at this stage No doubt he hit a hot streak in the 3rd even Gawn acknowledged this. It was not dissimilar to Stewy Dee’s 5 minute burst in the 3rd quarter of the 2008 Grand Final

  5. Weeds two biggest highlights at the dees - the three goals in the third quarter of the 2021 GF and the fifteen goals he kicked in the 2018 finals.

  7. My username is the same one I use for every website that requires one. Those with any botanical knowledge will recognise that it is a genus of Australian native plant in the heath family Ericaceae, reflecting one of my long held passions: native flora. Incidentally, the Latin translation means "white beard", which has become quite appropriate as I near the half century in age.

  8. My uneducated two penn'orth: For a team already demonstrably very good, how likely is it that one player - actually, less than one, being only the difference between that player and the pick 13 player - will make the difference between a premiership or not, or even in final ladder position? Whereas a generational 2023-draft group would forge their careers together - 'the whole is greater than the parts' - as our current one is (and it'd overlap nicely with that current group, too 🙂) And there's such expectation on unicorns, whereas a group of mere thoroughbreds will share that load. Unlike me to stick my head up on an actual footy discussion...

  10. Correct It's the Board version or nothing at the moment I like most of the board's proposed changes, but I dislike the key changes to Nominations processes Before the Board chose to actively campaign against a candidate last election I was relatively disinterested in the whole topic, and probably would have remained so. But that series of events irked me, and the Board's proposal to impede similar candidacy and then reaction to further agitation has continued to raise questions for me

  13. The story behind the avatar is that it was meant to be a send up of Clayton Oliver. I had Photoshopped an avatar of Darcy Parish as an oompah loompa (as he used to have the Oompa loompa hairstyle) in anticipation of us drafting him way back when, but had to come up with an alternative when we picked Clarry.

  14. Watched those 7 goals that turned the game from mid 3rd quarter to end of 3rd q and Jackson would be 5th most important, and several of the centre goals Luke was ineffective, but our mids still got it back... I recommend watching it again. Just for pure enjoyment of it.

  16. Thanks for that Poita. Looking forward to this game. The AFLW injury list link you posted has an asterisk next to us that says “current as of October 12”. Given that that is 8 days ago I wouldn’t despair or worry on Lauren Pearce just yet. I think the numbers are just out of date (which makes it weird Gay, Sheriff and Goldrick aren’t on it 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️). It’s also missing McNamara and Colvin 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️. I’m still relying on Mick’s presser, that Loz, Sheriff and Goldy are all a chance, Gay still a week away. EDIT: Injury list just came up on the MFC site. Goldy in, Pearce and Sheriff tests, Gay one more week. 17. Well I read the flyer so no need to send me something in gmail I will read next month… As for the challenge, I’m not convinced; it is written poorly and far too biased in its construction. I don’t think we should kid ourselves that football clubs should have pure ‘democratic’ functions and making it more difficult to create fissures is good for a club that just can’t seem to help itself be stable ever since you know what. This bloke hasn’t got my vote for his changes to the constitution, or to be on the board, or whatever he decides to do next because someone in the coterie was rude to him or something. rp out

  18. Open fair democracy is good. Just send the email address but do it through the MFC. Anyone who wants to join the board should be able to and have the same ability to communicate with members as current board members.

  20. This OC is a prime example of why I love Demonland so much. A great unfettered Democratic forum to respectfully express opinions and with the passion of a group of people who care about their Club. A couple of my opinions for what it's worth. 1. As a lawyer with some limited experience with Privacy law I just make the comment that under the terms of the Privacy policy the Club would face significant fines and the potential for individuals to sue them if they released our email addresses to Lawrence. End of story. Once he issued his proceedings the Club had no choice but to waste tens of thousands of our membership dollars on defending it. No doubt to avoid the cost of further litigation the Club will probably agree to send out his manifesto thus getting around the breach of Privacy law. Personally I'm not happy about this precedent at all. It means because of Lawrence any Tom Dick and Harry can start doing this as they please when they're not happy with processes put in place by the Board that have been elected by the members. I don't know about anyone else but I don't want to start getting streams of emails from disgruntled individual members on whatever topic they chose when they're not happy with Board decisions which is what this precedent would create if that is what happens. I am very confident about one thing and that is as long as there are institutions and there are Boards or Committees you can be guaranteed there are always going to be some people who are going to be disgruntled. I've seen some staggering behaviour at Junior footy club level little own the big league. You have elections so members can democratically elect the people they are putting their faith in to run the institution. Not everyone is going to agree with them. Lawrence is acting like our Trump. He stood for election and a tiny amount of the 56,000 members voted for him. He is clearly someone who has a bone to grind with this Board. He submitted his suggestions as did a lot of us and they either accepted them or didn't. He can't accept that and here we are. As for Lawrence's amendments. I strongly disagree with most of them and agree with two of them which I don't think justify his actions. New Constitution I agree that it makes sense to have created a new Constitution from scratch instead of just amending the old one. I don't think practically this makes any difference. He has not raised any material concerns with the vast majority of the existing constitution other than the couple of changes he wants. Twenty members for nomination I can see both sides of this argument. I imagine the Board has selected 20 so someone wanting to nominate outside the Board's selection process has to make some effort and show that there is some measure of support other than two members, who as someone mentioned could be your dog and your two year old. 20 out of 66,000 doesn't seem outrageous. On the other hand I can see that for an individual without access to information on other members trying to find 20 might be onerous. I would have thought 10 would have been fairer. This could be raised at the Special Meeting and discussed there. I don't think this point justifies what he has done. I strongly disagree with limiting Presidents to only one 3 year term. IMO they should have up to two terms and if that starts on the verge of their 9th year on the Board so be it. I think it's extremely important to have stability and 6 years is right for me for that purpose. As we saw last year if Presidents are problematic like Bartlett they can be voted out by the Board. If this Board didn't do that last year we would not have a Premiership or Coach. I don't agree with setting female quota's. I want the best people on the Board irrespective of gender or binary etc. I have no doubt that in due course the women's team is going to generate significant non male members and this will naturally lead to a greater representation of women on the Board as there will be much more women members and women's sporting and membership issues will become far more significant. I don't think it's necessary to set a quota for them.

  25. https://www.melbournefc.com.au/news/1238994/aflw-round-9-game-day-guide https://www.womens.afl/news/110439/injury-list-how-healthy-is-your-team-after-r8- A bit concerning that Lauren Pearce is still on the injury list per the AFL website. No mention of Gay, Goldrick or Sherriff though, so hopefully they are all okay. Essendon have some good players through the midfield, but not a lot depth (a bit like the Bulldogs), so hopefully we can get a similar result to round 7.

  26. Well many of us have seen the 'movie' and now you can read the book. (Written by Anson Cameron) I am not an avid reader of sports biography but I can say that the early years before they are famous are much more informative and interesting than the years after. Perhaps the discipline required to be a champ in a team environment tones down the experiences and the stories. (Shaun Burgoynes - Silk - $2Kmart - was somewhat dull when describing his time at Hawthorn and boy did he miss something). In terms of his time at the Dees the story is coloured by the merger talks and the coming of Joe Gutnick, who, Balmey says knew nothing about football and wasnt heard of before or after his chairmanship. (Shades of 'Black Arthur' in Sunday too Far Away). Neil also says that when he looked at the members of the coteries he didnt understand why the club was broke. As a player we all remember the hits, especially Geoff Southby, Blues fans still boo, and in another medium he has expressed some remorse in that he thought it was Vin Waite. This behaviour is a contradiction in that he comes across as a kind, loyal, caring man, who looked out for everybody at the club, and typically was the last to leave a function to ensure everyone was looked after and got away ok. These traits were put to good use in his role as Football Manager. So how do we explain the violence, which apparently was not part of his game before Richmond. Neil was extremely competitive, the type who would knock the board over if losing against the kids; his support and caring for his team mates went to the extreme of violence, and in those days thats how the game was played and some one in the team had to do it. I will leave the rest up to you. Worth a look. (ps I mentionned Patrick White in another thread but I think I got away with it)

  27. Just a little vent, hope nobody minds. 🙏 I got to the Reach Foundation building in Collingwood (where we make the banners). Got here early since we’re making this weekend’s banner plus a couple of generics for finals. Turns out Reach double-booked, so for this week a last-minute change to AAMI Park was made. I can’t get there in time so for the first time since joining the DA I won’t be involved. 😭 I was hoping to be the Jimmy of banner making but my run’s been broken. 😭😭 AND tonight the players are gonna be there to help make the banners. 😭😭😭 Anyways I feel so much better now. Thanks all. 🌸 We'll smash Essendon on Sunday and that’ll more than make up for this. ❤️💙 Edit: I was serious about my run. Even the OGs have had at least one week where they couldn’t make it. And my run included a late Thursday night banner build before a 6am flight to Brisbane the next morning in round 23. And so (next Thursday) begins another attempt at the record. 😁

  28. Sure, Petty could probably go forward. But we have one of if not the best back line in the league, and Petty is an integral part of that. Joel Smith or Tomlinson as permanent third tall, at least until Turner develops? Not so sure. Surely between BBB, Tom Mac, JVR and Schache we coud cobble together a half decent forward line. Though does depend on injuries, especially to the first two. Also worth noting in the Tim Lamb comments is a bit of a knock on our mids and our delivery into the forward line - which is why we wanted Hunter. No point putting whoever our saviour to be is down there if delivery and smarts don't improve.

  30. Class player. Multiskilled and smart. Tougher than he looks. Better on a wing and - perhaps - an odd run on the ball (see him breaking away from the middle).

  31. Jackson had 1 hitout and 1 goal assist for the entire 3rd quarter. Again, a very overstated performance by some on here regarding him being that important link..

  32. History has primary sources and secondary sources. As time disappears into the rear view mirror the perspectives alter. As Chancey Gardener observed you can’t beat being there. Before Luke Jackson went into the ruck late in the third quarter. We could not get our hands on the ball enough to do anything effective to respond to the Bullies hold on momentum. Jackson was the spark that lit the fuse, the pendulum began to swing our way the rest is history.

  33. Correct. That third quarter was won because of 4 players. Trac, Clarry, Viney and Fritta. The first three went beast mode and the last nailed the goals. We would have won that game even without Jackson, but we don't win it without the above 4. They were the real heroes.

  34. A certain prolific poster around here even went to the point of putting me on ignore because he wouldn't accept my view that Luke Jackson was NOT the sole reason we won the 2021 grand final. He was instrumental in that magical minute before 3 quarter time no doubt. However there were a few players who were more influential throughout that third quarter. Someone like a Bailey Fritsch should've been getting more of the credit than LJ. He was the one that kicked the two goals when we looked dead and buried.

  37. I’m an Optus and Medibank customer. Any email he tries to send me will end up in Russia’s with whoever’s assumed my identity. It makes me laugh to think that somewhere a hacker is shuffling through my digital footprint and wondering who the hell ‘Brett Lovett’ is, and why he’s the password to all my streaming services.

  40. In practical terms: Kate Roffey joined the board in 2013, 9 years ago. If she was a regular board member it would be time for her to wind it up. Seems about right. But after 8 years of solid service on the board she’s only been President for 1 year, it would be crazy to finish her up now. Makes perfect sense that she stays for up to 2 more terms in the top job. If she’s done well she’ll have served 7 years in the top job which is probably the perfect amount of time to make a difference then hand over.

  41. It'd be kinda funny to use the 1st round pick we got from Freo on the son of Freo's inaugural AFL captain. Could reunite him with his old Claremont teammate in JVR to boot.

  42. Wow, can’t believe someone would seriously put that forward as an argument, but there you go…. We’re not talking about recruiting callow young ruckman here, where it takes several seasons to get them to maturity. I want quality board members who can hit the ground running and help make our club the best it can be from top to bottom for the whole of their terms. You make it seem like getting on the board is like being inducted into a cult.

  43. Still say something could be worked out with the endless Melbourne Tennis Centre upgrades that keep happening. That massive complex lies under utilised for 10 months of the year. We still train at the upgraded Gosch’s ground but we have social and admin facilities in existing MTC buildings and a state of the art training facility built at the MTC in their next upgrade for use by the world’s elite tennis players for 2 months a year, in December and January and the MFC for the rest.

  44. I am like a lot of relatively passive members when it comes to the politics of the board. The last thing I want for Melbourne FC is an "open slather democracy" that runs the risk of degenerating into unnecessary dissension, infighting and ugly coups (much like Essendon at the moment, admittedly due to poor board performance). The second last thing I want is a closed board that runs the risk of degenerating into an arrogant autocracy (much like Eddie McGuire's reign at Collingwood). That said, and just looking at it from the outside, I think the Deemocracy proposal is sensible and avoids both. From my experience on the board of a golf club, in regard to member contact it's a requirement of the Corporations Act (and the Incorporated Associations Act) and often the constitution of the club itself, that the member's roll is available for viewing by any member on application. It's hardly ever asked for, and privacy considerations prevent the organisation from divulging addresses for general use. For elections etc. a sensible organisation would offer to send e-mail communication on behalf of the member, provided they can show that their purpose is genuine, constitutional and not vexatious.

  45. I think we want to hold onto next year's draft currency given it's meant to be a very good draft, and there are a few KPFs coming out of contract that we might want to lure. A strong hand next year gives us lots of options

  46. Quite the tale! I am so sorry to hear about your brother, and then the subsequent family [censored]. Believe it or not I was 7 when I immigrated to australia (what can I say, I just had enough of my parents and needed a new start). I literally read a magazine on the 747 and there was an article on Jimmy and Sean Wight. I figured there was only one team in Melbourne so obviously I would support them! First game I watched in full was the 88 GF. First game when i started to love footy was the 89 GF. Sorry my tale is not quite as romantic
