The MFC media department has copped a fair bit of flak on here over recent years (fairly enough too), but I wanted to give some credit for the mid-season update material the club's posted over the last week. We've now had mid-season update videos from Pert, Petracca and now Goodwin. There was also a small insight into the post-match review process from Lever's perspective. Might be more before the next game but even if not, I've appreciated the club's attempts to get some communication out to the members about where we sit both on and off the field.8 points

The highlight was when someone (unknown) kicked one out of the ground and I marked it and from 50 kicked truly on an angle back onto the ground through the goals leaving MFC madly scrambling for my services as Goal kicking coach?8 points

You can lead to the flank, use your rump to hold out your defender, t-bone anyone trying to block you, meat the footy with both hands and steak your claim as a forward who can last the forequarters.8 points

Second hand info, so not very detailed - Heard that Jones was busy, got lots of it, and B.Brown kicked at least 3-4 goals. Apologies I don't know more yet.7 points

Looks to me the AFL have found a way to make a Tasmanian team work. Relocate Essendon ?.6 points
-
Agreed. Screw that old dee. I want to go to the game. I want to see my team play. I don't care if that means Essendon makes money. I've spent too long with my side being rubbish: we're half-decent this year and I want to see them as much as I can.6 points

Also Melksham looked better and Daw apparently pretty good. Apparently hard to read too much into it though as it doesn't sound like it was a super intense hitout given the short break.6 points

Bombers are in very good form. We'll need to bring our A game or close, to win next weekend. Not an easy game by any means5 points

Well, he’s roasted every week on DL. He may need a grilling by the club. Otherwise, he’ll be stewing on this forever. And he’ll shank more games.5 points

Mr Leg... at the age of 23, 196cm, into his 6th season and weighing 95Kg i really think he is well past the boyhood phase. He should be coming in to the prime of his career about now or be well under way already. Just saying!5 points

Interesting how we have "AFL players who can't do the basics" but can still be 11-2 going into the bye ?4 points

If he clunked marks we could excuse his poor goal kicking. If he kicked goals we could excuse his poor marking.4 points

In that case, we'd all say "well done" but his best form is rare and he may be replaced by a medium. He's no longer raw, but is he cooked?4 points

I’ve just found my notes on this subject from a couple of years ago when I was doing some work at the MCG. The ground measurements are actually 173.6 metres long by 148.4 meters wide fence to fence (my apologies for being incorrect before). I notice that I put in brackets beside those measurements the same measurements for the playing surface as you quote i.e. 160 x 141. The difference in the length of almost 7 meters at each end can be explained by the fact that it is the distance from goal line to fence, the increased area behind the goals in which the goal umpire is given to work and adjudicate. There are also pits at each end of the ground which house the netting structures put up to protect patrons during pre game practice, so that 7 meter distance is necessary. Around the rest of the ground the distance is around 3.5 - 4 metres (interchange area excepted).4 points

I see a boy that has lost all confidence in his marking. As a result he is not leading. I also see a boy who is 196 cms and was BOG in our first final in years, against the Cats, a couple of years ago. I don’t believe you lose your talent that easily and that confidence is a big thing in footy. Time for Choco to get the best out of this kid. It is easy to write off a kid, but I just feel that all is not lost with him. I recall the comments last year about Tom Mac and all those who wanted him gone, Hunt and Spargo too and plenty wanted Fritta out as well. I wanted ANB gone. Hello, we are on top of the ladder and those 5 have played nearly every game with only Fritta missing one due to injury. Weid may fail, but I am not writing him off.4 points

They love to make examples of lesser players who won't harm the bottom line or get Twateley or Slobbo or Luke Duh-cy ranting on the airwaves. All they need to do is make an example of a Selwood, Cotchin, Lynch, Danger, Mummy and wipe out the problem in one round of footy.3 points

SIR, LOINS and his other body parts are injury-free. He should be able to MEAT expectations. He might need to be CUT, LET him go free. Or he will forever be LAMBasted.3 points

Collingwood could do with a decent groundsman. I can't help thinking that the amount of injuries they've had over the past 4 or so years are linked to the surface on their training ovals. With our Casey facility upgrades, as I've mentioned previously, a mate of mine who works at Casey says our training facilities out there now match the likes of Liverpool in England. It's a world class set up. So not only have world class facilities become important for attracting players and best preparing the players already there, they've very likely become essential to avoiding mounting injury lists. With the loads of modern day players higher than ever before, it makes sense that the surface on which they train and play has become just as vital.3 points

Let’s have 30,000 people at the footy and make them all sit in one single bay. Two to a seat if possible. Let’s not allow 50,000 people and spread them out so there is a 2 seat gap between each group or family attending together. Because #logic2 points

Bombers made to look average by a poor Hawks side. Just got over the line thanks to an unbelievable game from Stringer if we are switched on, they shouldn’t cause us problems2 points

Hmm. It seems like straight kicking can play a factor in your score and whether you're winning or losing. I'm looking forward to our team trying that.2 points

As Sue said, it's a corrupt competition. Not in the sense of brown paper bags under tables, but in the sense of being degraded and rotten. It seems on every single issue -- sacrosanct heads, MRP, fixtures, away jumpers, umpiring, the draft -- the AFL are incapable of being consistent and holding a line. Or even knowing if they have a line at all.2 points

it REALLY annoys me that the caption is 'mid season review' and the title is 'mid-season update' for the goodwin one great content tho2 points

Likewise for all the silly non-reportable stuff that goes on. Award a free kick against immediately. Do that a few times and players will soon stop doing anything but playing footy.2 points

Sounds like it’s not a question of whether crowds will be allowed in Melbourne next weekend, but a question of how many? Really hoping it’s 50%.2 points

Where's Steve Hocking? Jumps out of his chair to send Mackay to the Tribunal for contesting the ball. Nowhere to be seen when Joel Selwood deliberately drops an arm into a player's head.2 points

Posted in another thread that we have, alongside a number of clubs, met with Richards management. He certainly seems as though a realistic target. The less he plays the more likely he is on the move.2 points

Is style/brand and therefore performance linked to turf management? From a soccer/football perspective this article suggest it is. Not sure it’s relevant to AFL though. a fascinating read.2 points

What would a Tommy Bugg or an ANB get if they poked a player in the eye? We might not see them ever again on a footy field. (Yes I know TB has retired.) This [censored] of "aww gee, we don't want the best players in the game on the sidelines ... we want them on the ground wowing the crowds" must stop. The rules should be the same for all players. But since the days of Judd and his eye gouging and "pressure points", it's been entrenched that's there's one rule for the "stars" and another for the Tommy Buggs.2 points

I agree Mr Leg, it is far from time to write him off. But I think he will benefit from a stint in the backline where I think he could excel. Start with spoiling and then evolve into intercept marking. Could be great development for him. We have invested a lot in him, no need to throw it out now when there is still more things to try. He is far from the finished product.2 points

Weideman is not going to pop up suddenly and kick 5 goals any time soon no matter how many more weeks we play him at the moment. He's never going to be a Neita or a Schwarta with an intimidating physical presence anyhow. He has to either get really smart about positioning or develop a stronger lower body, torso, and stronger hands. He often gets to the right position but then doesn't have the strength to see it through. Brushed off like a fly. BBB is reported as going through a mid-season pre-season. Make of that what you will. (Clearly not meeting expectations set by the football department). The forgotten man is Mitch Brown. No star but a proven forward and goal kicker who knows and plays his role well. And he actually kicks goals and is a no fuss player. He could be our Clark Keating waiting in the wings...the September specialist. Worth a shot as clearly FF is a poisoned chalice in the meantime.2 points

You can’t expect the discussion to be “reasonable” when we are effectively down a player every week. That is an honest evaluation of SW’s input to the club’s performances so far. Just a blurry void where a player ought to be standing, and right in front of the goals no less.2 points
