  1. The MFC media department has copped a fair bit of flak on here over recent years (fairly enough too), but I wanted to give some credit for the mid-season update material the club's posted over the last week. We've now had mid-season update videos from Pert, Petracca and now Goodwin. There was also a small insight into the post-match review process from Lever's perspective. Might be more before the next game but even if not, I've appreciated the club's attempts to get some communication out to the members about where we sit both on and off the field.

  2. The highlight was when someone (unknown) kicked one out of the ground and I marked it and from 50 kicked truly on an angle back onto the ground through the goals leaving MFC madly scrambling for my services as Goal kicking coach?

  3. You can lead to the flank, use your rump to hold out your defender, t-bone anyone trying to block you, meat the footy with both hands and steak your claim as a forward who can last the forequarters.

  4. Second hand info, so not very detailed - Heard that Jones was busy, got lots of it, and B.Brown kicked at least 3-4 goals. Apologies I don't know more yet.

  5. Looks to me the AFL have found a way to make a Tasmanian team work. Relocate Essendon ?.
    5 points
  6. Agreed. Screw that old dee. I want to go to the game. I want to see my team play. I don't care if that means Essendon makes money. I've spent too long with my side being rubbish: we're half-decent this year and I want to see them as much as I can.

  7. Also Melksham looked better and Daw apparently pretty good. Apparently hard to read too much into it though as it doesn't sound like it was a super intense hitout given the short break.

  8. Mr Leg... at the age of 23, 196cm, into his 6th season and weighing 95Kg i really think he is well past the boyhood phase. He should be coming in to the prime of his career about now or be well under way already. Just saying!

  9. It is a joke when the 30% gets jammed into one area.

  10. Bombers are in very good form. We'll need to bring our A game or close, to win next weekend. Not an easy game by any means

  11. I’ve just found my notes on this subject from a couple of years ago when I was doing some work at the MCG. The ground measurements are actually 173.6 metres long by 148.4 meters wide fence to fence (my apologies for being incorrect before). I notice that I put in brackets beside those measurements the same measurements for the playing surface as you quote i.e. 160 x 141. The difference in the length of almost 7 meters at each end can be explained by the fact that it is the distance from goal line to fence, the increased area behind the goals in which the goal umpire is given to work and adjudicate. There are also pits at each end of the ground which house the netting structures put up to protect patrons during pre game practice, so that 7 meter distance is necessary. Around the rest of the ground the distance is around 3.5 - 4 metres (interchange area excepted).

  13. I see a boy that has lost all confidence in his marking. As a result he is not leading. I also see a boy who is 196 cms and was BOG in our first final in years, against the Cats, a couple of years ago. I don’t believe you lose your talent that easily and that confidence is a big thing in footy. Time for Choco to get the best out of this kid. It is easy to write off a kid, but I just feel that all is not lost with him. I recall the comments last year about Tom Mac and all those who wanted him gone, Hunt and Spargo too and plenty wanted Fritta out as well. I wanted ANB gone. Hello, we are on top of the ladder and those 5 have played nearly every game with only Fritta missing one due to injury. Weid may fail, but I am not writing him off.

  15. Interesting how we have "AFL players who can't do the basics" but can still be 11-2 going into the bye ?

  16. I know we complain about commentary around here a lot, but we are right.

  17. If he clunked marks we could excuse his poor goal kicking. If he kicked goals we could excuse his poor marking.

  18. In that case, we'd all say "well done" but his best form is rare and he may be replaced by a medium. He's no longer raw, but is he cooked?

  19. Collingwood could do with a decent groundsman. I can't help thinking that the amount of injuries they've had over the past 4 or so years are linked to the surface on their training ovals. With our Casey facility upgrades, as I've mentioned previously, a mate of mine who works at Casey says our training facilities out there now match the likes of Liverpool in England. It's a world class set up. So not only have world class facilities become important for attracting players and best preparing the players already there, they've very likely become essential to avoiding mounting injury lists. With the loads of modern day players higher than ever before, it makes sense that the surface on which they train and play has become just as vital.

  21. Let’s have 30,000 people at the footy and make them all sit in one single bay. Two to a seat if possible. Let’s not allow 50,000 people and spread them out so there is a 2 seat gap between each group or family attending together. Because #logic

  25. They love to make examples of lesser players who won't harm the bottom line or get Twateley or Slobbo or Luke Duh-cy ranting on the airwaves. All they need to do is make an example of a Selwood, Cotchin, Lynch, Danger, Mummy and wipe out the problem in one round of footy.

  28. Where's Steve Hocking? Jumps out of his chair to send Mackay to the Tribunal for contesting the ball. Nowhere to be seen when Joel Selwood deliberately drops an arm into a player's head.

  29. Posted in another thread that we have, alongside a number of clubs, met with Richards management. He certainly seems as though a realistic target. The less he plays the more likely he is on the move.

  30. Is style/brand and therefore performance linked to turf management? From a soccer/football perspective this article suggest it is. Not sure it’s relevant to AFL though. a fascinating read.

  31. What would a Tommy Bugg or an ANB get if they poked a player in the eye? We might not see them ever again on a footy field. (Yes I know TB has retired.) This [censored] of "aww gee, we don't want the best players in the game on the sidelines ... we want them on the ground wowing the crowds" must stop. The rules should be the same for all players. But since the days of Judd and his eye gouging and "pressure points", it's been entrenched that's there's one rule for the "stars" and another for the Tommy Buggs.

  32. Weideman is not going to pop up suddenly and kick 5 goals any time soon no matter how many more weeks we play him at the moment. He's never going to be a Neita or a Schwarta with an intimidating physical presence anyhow. He has to either get really smart about positioning or develop a stronger lower body, torso, and stronger hands. He often gets to the right position but then doesn't have the strength to see it through. Brushed off like a fly. BBB is reported as going through a mid-season pre-season. Make of that what you will. (Clearly not meeting expectations set by the football department). The forgotten man is Mitch Brown. No star but a proven forward and goal kicker who knows and plays his role well. And he actually kicks goals and is a no fuss player. He could be our Clark Keating waiting in the wings...the September specialist. Worth a shot as clearly FF is a poisoned chalice in the meantime.

  33. You can’t expect the discussion to be “reasonable” when we are effectively down a player every week. That is an honest evaluation of SW’s input to the club’s performances so far. Just a blurry void where a player ought to be standing, and right in front of the goals no less.

  35. Oliver had his worst first quarter. But it happens. When a centre clearance was won, the ball use was poor. Langdon missing the prior game upset his performance. Sparrow is still not ready and our forward line despite delivery was a rabble. Despite what the club says , I think it was a clear case of being over confident and it showed. Almost any club in the comp can roll another if a team doesnt give their all. Sadly the arrogance was Dees of old. Its not to say they havent changed. Some things take time. They will learn and not do it again.

  36. On the pitch topic in that final Melbourne got belted by West Coast we were slipping over all day and they weren't. We were out played but I'd love to know why only we were slipping over.

  38. Bellamy is a genius. He turns players that clubs don't want into stars. He loses his captain and one of the greatest players ever but know worries others step up. The storm actually get good support in qld and yeah crowds could have slightly increased.

  40. For mine, it’s just a pointless club. I don’t know, set up a club on the Mornington Peninsula. Couldn’t be worse than the nothingness that is the GCS. At least you could knick off to a winery if the team is rubbish.

  41. For me, there's some admiration for where Richmond have come from and what they've built over the past decade. Geelong just seem to get a free ride with home games, umpiring etc etc. They have an arrogant sook for a coach. I'll acknowledge their recruitment has been really good and they have rebuilt while staying competitive. Wouldn't be surprised if they're rigging the cap to do it though

  42. How people view leadership is very subjective in an organisation that has week values and a poor culture. We’ve finally turned that corner and in a big way when you listen to the likes of Gawn, Lever and as above with Petracca. The standards are solid, the culture has changed and matured - guided by a football program that we probably don’t give enough kudos to. My choice of our next Skipper would be Petracca ahead of Lever. Both very important players but the game breaking plays from Petracca sets him apart from Lever and therefore I see him as the next natural on field leader whilst he has clearly shown his off-field development. Probably worth a shout out to his girl as well. Since she’s come on the scene Christian has really figured things out. ??

  43. I think you might be right. I can see the next leader being either Lever or Petracca. I'm actually confident that Trent Rivers will also be a future leader for us. He's only into his second season and he already plays like a senior footballer. Also helps that half backs are known to be good captains.

  47. To me the BBB vs Weid comparison at VFL level performance somewhat distorts the picture. I think it's far more representative to look at their respective performances at senior level. Weid: 5 games, 3 goals. Drops marks all over the shop, doesn't get to the right places and sprays his set shots. Limited track record of producing it at the top level. BBB: 3 games, 5 goals. Doesn't look 100% with the pace of the game or to have found chemistry within the team, but still holds marks and gets to the right spots. Hardly looks like missing a set shot with signature cartoon style 100m run-up and set shot routine. During the 2017, 2018 and 2019 home and away seasons Brown finished 3rd, 2nd and 2nd in the Coleman medal and kicked a combined total of 188 goals across 66 games, the most of any player in the AFL over that time period. Best individual effort in a game 10 goals. I known some of his VFL form has been underwhelming, but there are some players that don't perform as well at VFL level, compared to the seniors and perhaps BBB is one of those. If there is a player we would want to be getting right and embedding into the team over the back half of the season for a serious run at finals the pointy end of the season it's BBB.
