  1. As we enjoy this period of success, a period of nine weeks that no one could have predicted at the beginning of the season , we should remember the past. In particular, all those who have gone to the after life without seeing success. There are the older brigade that may have seen success pre-1965 but had to endure decades of failure and there are those poor souls born post 64 but who sadly passed on before 2021. Remember them. Remember chance. There are those that are born, live and love at an opportune time and thousands of supporters that in footy terms were dealt a bad hand. Every win in a surreal way, is a win for them. Here’s to patience, endurance, resilience and long life. Here’s hoping that we carry the eternal spirit of our friends and family who were Dees supporters. If we are here today, we are lucky. If we can just enjoy the present and not worry about the future, then we should rejoice in seeing our mob rise from the ashes. We are watching a collection of young stars developing into a formidable team. It is like the development of Norms boys in the 50s. There is something special in the air. Go Dees you bloody beauties.

  5. I think Oliver is so good that any criticism is simply absurd. There is no perfect player, there is no perfect human being. Everyone has their strengths and weaknesses. All the footy greats have had them. Oliver does things that I have never seen before. You know what I mean. He is a freak or very close to one. At the very least he has skills that make him a great player. We are lucky to have him. Sit back watch him closely, enjoy it, be amazed at what he can do, and forget the faults. I have made my mind up. He is a freak! And he is our freak. Enjoy the moment because down the track he will be gone. We will not see his like again. And like Robbie he will be just a memory and we will sit back and say, how good was Oliver.

  6. We could be 19-0 playing a 16 man North Melbourne and I guarantee someone would say "This is a danger game."

  7. Can't comment on any issues in his youth at Wang but the issue at the Dees was very minor. iirc it wasn't an accident. He had a + alcohol reading while on P plates (should be zero). He was not over .05 which means he could not have had many drinks. I'm not condoning his mistake, just giving more context to your statement. There was no police action. The club asked him to get education and he apologised to the team. His behaviour since the + reading has been exemplary on and off the field. He is one of our hardest trainers and takes his football very seriously. I'm sure you don't intend to cast dispersion on his character but claims about 'issues' need a bit more substance.

  8. And I just need to say it again. What a ripping game from Rivers. Star. He's even better on replay.

  9. This is my philosophy in a nutshell. I'd go further though. As supporters, we should be taking the lid off at every opportunity. We support a team that hasn't looked like winning a premiership for 50-odd years. Who wants to spend an entire lifetime without once believing/acting as though your team is the best in the land? We should all believe that we are currently unbeatable because it might end at some stage and that means your whole footy supporting life will include (a) worrying about losing and (b) losing. Go Dees!

  10. Hi all, It's the 100th episode of the Deeluded podcast this week, and we're very excited to interview President Kate Roffey. The club's flying at the moment, but there are plenty of big questions for the Board, including finding a new home base. We'd love to know what you'd like us to ask Kate—please leave your questions below, and we'll feature the best ones on the show. Thanks! Kiran & Nita

  12. I often think of my grandfather after a win (any win, but certainly more in these lovely times). He got me onto footy and supporting Melbourne when I came down from Brisbane as a kid. He took me to the 2000 GF, which I was luckily young enough not to care a great deal about when we lost. I really got into footy in 2004, and we went to watch many games in the next few years, and always chatted about it when we saw each other. He passed away about 10 years ago, so he missed Neeld thank god. Too bad he can't see this, which is starting to very much make up for it.

  13. I would understand it if people were saying to give him another week off his feet to ensure complete recovery, but as fitness is highly unlikely to be an issue with a seasoned player, to suggest he be given game time in the VFL doesn’t make sense... if his toe fails him, it fails him regardless of where he’s playing. As long as we have a suitable sub (Sparrow), then I don’t see it as an issue.

  14. Spot on. Which is clearly why Melksham got dropped. But he is the exception to prove the rule. And who would want to lose their spot in this team at this point in time? To that list of players add Jordon. A young player who has done everything that has been asked of him this season. And is fully, all chips in. That was crystal clear in his phenomenal performance on Saturday. He was clearly asked to play Viney's role as the hard nosed, defensive mid and was a big reason why we won the center clearance count, albeit by one, after last weeks lopsided differential. His pressure was off the charts as evidenced by his game high 37 pressure acts and 13 tackles (also game high). By the by it is interesting that Jordon's DE was 50%. He is normally up in the 80-90% range, in large part because he is an excellent kick. But more significantly, we have used him as an outside player on the flanks, so he usually has a bit of time and space to dispose of the ball. As a pure inside mid he is obviously under heaps more pressure. It is a good reminder, i reckon, to look at DE in context for players like Viney, Tracc and Oliver. Pity Brayshaw doesn't have that get out! On DE, although their disposal numbers were pretty low, May (and he kicks it out i guess) and Lever were both in the 90s and Rivers was mid 80s. Solid. And makes so much harder for them to get the ball back from us. That said Petty, who i think is an excellent kick, went at 55%. That needs to be an outlier.

  15. Brayshaw had a rough game against the Swans and made some poor skill errors in an otherwise good game against Carlton. I'm grateful that we have players with humility that are willing to just play a role. Gus reads the game really well and is an asset to the team. I think many here use that surprise Brownlow finish and his early draft position as a knock on him. I don't see any reason to judge him against those things. It's his ability to play a role for the team that is all that matters. I've seen some signs that he's really starting to understand his role in the team as a high intercept player. His courage is outstanding. Had he used the ball well on Sunday, he would have been in my top 5 on the field and he has shown previously that he is more than capable of doing that.

  17. When Carlton were coming hard, Jordon got in and under and dump kicked it 3 times to just get the ball out of the D50 and each time it went to a Carlton player. Every time it was the right choice to give our defence the time to reset and get the ball out of the area. This negatively impacts his DE percentage but was the right thing to do in game.

  18. Brayshaw's stats on the AFL website: 26 Disposals at 58% efficiency - agreed can be better but it was also wet conditions 12 Contested possessions - equal 5th on the ground 12 Intercept possessions - best on ground, this meant he stopped a lot of Carlton's moves forward 10 Clangers - your knock on him, Oliver had 11 to top the list with 2 more disposals, are we dropping him as well? Gus stays, there is nothing more certain.

  23. I am actually hoping that both Viney and Jackson aren't rushed back and we get them ready for the Dogs game, which will be our second 6-day break in a row and we will need fresh legs. I also want to see how Weid and Chandler go again. Chandler was uber-impressive against the Tiger pre-season and has stepped up at VFL level. He got pinged in a tackle early and it was one of those days where nothing went right for him - even the Gatorade drenching post-game. But he did keep working hard on covering players (Saad, Docherty etc) and deserves another shot. Weid had to get used to a predominantly new roaming forward/ruck position (aka Jacko), which was very different to last year's main man role. His first real big chance, where he shrugged off his man saw Chandler spoil him, which was a shame - but that's football - it doesn't always work out. I am also hopeful that one of our mids is given a break so that Tom Sparrow gets his chance to see if he can get closer to dominating after two mega impressive VFL games.

  24. I sat back and had a think of the great Dees midfielders I have seen since the early 70's, and I reckon this bloke is the best I have seen. A big call, but I honestly can't see a more natural on-baller during any era. His movement and game-reading around a contest are breath taking, his hands are as quick as Sam Mitchell, Simon Black, Greg Williams and co. But for me it is his pace. He plays the game at full tilt. And he is still sprinting while others are out on their feet. He is so good, I would absolutely loathe him if he played for another team.

  26. I understand there was an interview with Kate on the ABC this week, where she stated she had travelled and observed pre-game entertainment, and was encouraged by the US model. Personally I don't like all the hype that is the "Match Day experience" , Can you ask her why she thinks we need to suffer this intrusion. i.e Flashing lightning strikes and loud booms when we kick a goal, and blaring music during all the breaks. (I don't think I am alone here)

  29. No I must say Ive never had the pleasure. Ive heard that most of them are out on day release. So I guess I should be more generous to the crows mob. Nah I cant. Perpetual booers. Drives me bonkers when they boo every shot on goal. I know its not cricket but sheesh. I remember those safari suits. My dad wore one for several years(i think it was the same one) In my role as family clown I wouud quip as he walked out the front door.. "Dad be careful its a jungle out there" He never appreciated it.

  31. Goody deserves some credit also. He met Oliver in his Mum's kitchen pre-draft and said if Clayton shed 6 kg they would look at him . he did, and he was drafted. Roos gave the Dees credibility - Goody set the standard fro Clayton's undeniable talent.

  32. I would have thought that with Viney's history, you take the initial diagnosis, double it, and then add another week just to be sure. He is his own worst enemy, and has form for coming back too early and causing more damage. I certainly wouldn't be playing him against Adelaide.

  33. 100% with you on that. Need him to go head to head with Libba in 2 weeks time. He has to negate his influence in the contest. We stop the Doggies with clearances and we will take them to the sword.

  35. Our best results in seasons are: 1990 - 16 - 6 (4th) 1956 - 16 - 2 (1st + Flag) We went 15 - 3 in 37(2nd +PF), 39 (1st + Flag), 55 (1st + Flag) and 58 (1st + lost GF) In more recent history: 2000, 2004 + 2018 we went 14 - 8 in all 3 of those years Best Ladder position at the end of H&A was 3rd in 2000 I predict we'll go 18-4 this year

  36. Could Christian’s consistent inconsistency be merely due to his undeniable incompetence, or does it suggest the possibility of serious underlying “agendas” at the highest levels? Seriously, how could he possibly condone / ignore Rampe’s highly dangerous sling on Langdon, then ping this?? Incompetence alone, even gross incompetence, cannot explain it.
