They could all be handy if given the chance. The three ex-Gippsland Power graduates, Baldi, Sparkes and Hourigan, were all above average NAB League players and very good team players but probably lacked the X-factor to be drafted. Baldi is a pretty highly-credentialed junior rover who can play forward, wins a lot of the footy, cracks in, does everything pretty well, but probably just not penetrative at his size (he's probably 175cm) to be have been drafted to play midfield at AFL level and not tricky enough as a forward. A poor man's Caleb Serong. Sparkes is a wingman/flanker, neat with what he does with with the footy, but again for a wingman maybe deemed a tad vanilla. Doesn't do much wrong, but not a hugely impactful player, a get it in space and safely move it on-type player, not a gamebreaker enough for the most part. Hourigan is a third defender, similar in style and appearance to Tom Jonas but obviously not as good a player. He's pretty good but probably not athletic or big enough to shutdown good AFL forwards and doesn't compensate with enough rebounding punch to have been draftable. He can play forward a bit as well. Probably will compete for the roles Hutchins has been doing for Casey. Probably would fit best in a zoning back 6. Courtney is a ruckman who will probably be Bradtke's backup, depending on where Tom McDonald fits at Casey. Has unbridled athleticism, but his game is uncultured. His mobility lets him be used in other positions - A project player. Foot is a run and carry wingman/half forward. Probably has the most X-factor and game-breaking ability of the group, but obviously didn't do enough to stick with the Swans, a team who aren't super blessed with outside runners.6 points

Who knows where any potential rookie listing or not might lead young Kobe with the MFC and I'm sure there are those whom might take a clinical view of the world and suggest that if he wasn't taken in the draft that perhaps there is some good reasons for that and why would we now rookie list him. However if Kobe is anywhere near just good enough and ticks all the right character tests etc for us to use a rookie spot on and develop, I really do like us having some father sons around the place. Think it adds some depth of character and meaning to pulling on the MFC jumper if we can maintain and build a good sense of club loyalty and history, which elevates the retention/attraction of playing for the MFC in general.4 points

https://www.afl.com.au/news/533681/bids-bluffs-and-frantic-calls-inside-2020-s-first-round-draft-frenzy An interesting article about how the first round panned out behind the scenes with numerous deals in the works had stars aligned differently. In relation to the dees, we had an offer from the crows involving our 18 and 28 for their 22 and 23, leaving us with 19, 22, 23. However the article states the crows were intent on using that pick for Laurie. No other whispers in terms of potential deals we were involved in however it did mention the Giants interest in both Bowey and Laurie for their pick immediately following us, which then made them pull the trigger on trading out that pick to the pies for their future first. Also mentioned that if the tigers had of kept their pick they were likely to take Laurie and West Coast also tried to get into the tigers pick for either Laurie or O'Driscoll. Saints also keen on Laurie and Bowey.4 points

Not sure what all the angst is about. Good sides win no matter where or when. Poor sides look for excuses. We will win both.4 points

I like the idea of a summer training base and for this year a training base. your away from everyone and sole focus is improving. The Oval is in ripping condition and the new building out there looks great.4 points

This sort of completely rude, pointless post is a stain on this generally pretty good site. Just rubbish and it says all I need to know about who you are a person. And it is one of your more innocuous posts. As I have posted before I put very few posters on ignore. Mostly with posters such as yourself who add little but angst i just don't bother with their posts, or if I do use sarcasm to make a point. But this rudeness is the straw 'dr d' and on ignore you go. It has been a tough long year for everyone. Who needs to see such dull negativity.3 points

We are so frustrating and can't be trusted. It's not pleasant watching them, it's a chore. As a long time supporter I'm tired. Tired of not seeing them fulfil potential. Tired of seeing them drop games they should win. Tired of watching subpar skills. Tired of having [censored] Robbo as the game day hype man. Tired of seeing Trac, Clarry and Brayshaw not got back and take their time off the mark. Tired of seeing Melksham give away stupid 50s. Tired of not seeing the club hire a vodou houngan to calm the uneasy spirit of Norm Smith. Tired of saying wtf happened to Tom McDonald Tired of seeing spuds like ANB on the list Tired of Greg Stafford being our goal kicking coach (pre-Choco) Think of this as my MFC Festivus - I got a lot of problems with you people!3 points

@4_Kent_Watts I think this is the major takeaway from here. This site has a cross section of people from real life and overwhelming majority are, at their core, really well intentioned even if we make mistakes. There are a couple of posters who might make that difficult to imagine, but sometimes you need to ignore some of the loudest voices and realise that those voices only reflect a small minority.3 points

Is there any chance that this poxy excuse for a website might be updated some time this millenium? The AFLW draft was more than 10 weeks ago and we still don't have pictures of the draftees on the website. The men's page has not been updated for any post season player movements, although it is good to see Oscar McDonald still on the list. I get that clubs are working with a skeleton staff, but surely someone can spare five minutes to add some pictures to the website.2 points

Q: Who finished second behind Dusty in the 2017, 2019 and 2020 Norm Smith medals? A: Houli, Houli, Short. If he can handle afl pressure and get a dozen kicks across half back then he’ll prove his worth.2 points

I hear you Deegirl I had to stop watching mid-way through 2019. Wasn’t fair on the family to put up with my outbursts and grumpiness. I was so expectant after 2018 and then….devastation. Disappointment is the lot of most fans but the life of a dees supporter is a tough road. But having said that, when we eventually come good, and we will (hopefully I’ll be alive) it will be all the sweeter for having travelled that road. Go dees!2 points

He’s lived with it all his life and hopefully, has learned to cope with the mostly unreal expectations placed on his shoulders. No doubt the club is well aware of this and will ensure that he’s well mentored over the coming months. I would expect that Nev Jetta would be fantastic in the role.2 points

If his knee holds up, I wouldn't be a bit surprised if Neita leapfrogs most on your wing list. He's missed a truckload of footy but his hard work and meticulous preparation (by all reports) should stand him in good stead. IIRC his strengths were endurance and kicking, amongst others. I know he was drafted as a half back, but I reckon he'll hammer down any door for a spot in the side with a bit of footy under the belt. I wish him every success after two recos and there aren't too many Dees I'd rather see debut than him ATM2 points

@goodoil is spot on with his assessment of these youngsters. Ryan Sparkes was probably the one youngster from the 2019 U18s season (Gippsland Power) who I thought was a late pick or rookie chance but missed out in the 2019 draft. It would have been good to see him develop at Casey as he has good skills and run. I’d be interested to see if Casey can convince Tim Smith to pull on the boots in 2021. He was a heart and soul player like Jimmy Munro at Casey and was unlucky with injuries in his AFL days.2 points

There’s a chance that we might leave both slots open for the mid season draft. It seems to me that there are likely to be a number of players who missed their Under 18 year and didn’t have sufficient time or exposure to show the improvement that they might otherwise have demonstrated but for the pandemic.2 points

PECKING ORDER FOR TALL FORWARDS 1. B.BROWN 2. WEIDEMAN 3. JACKSON 4. MCDONALD 5. M.BROWN What was a weakness could be a strength if B.Brown can find his form and Weidman and Jackson can improve. PECKING ORDER SMALL FORWARDS 1. PICKETT 2. FRITSCH 3. MELKSHAM 4. HUNT 5. SPARGO 6. NEAL-BULLEN 7. LAURIE 8. BEDFORD Still a weakness but our depth is better hopefully Laurie can climb up the ladder.2 points

Personally I'd be leaving a slot open for the mid season draft. There'll be more than one good player that slipped through the draft purely due to the circumstances. With half a season under their belt we'll have a better idea on talent.2 points

If Melksham is playing regular football in 2021 we are in all sorts. I don't think I've seen someone phone it in like he did in 2020.2 points

Can confirm he has lost 6kg and is absolutely flying on the track. Goody considering playing him on the wing next year.2 points

A Feelgood story when Aaron plays his first game Must be highly regarded to be kept on the list after two knee reconstructions, let's hope the luck turns for the kid. I be looking forward with interest when Aaron makes his debut.2 points

Someone asked her for her negatives. I thought there was some humour (festivus) in the reply. You could ask her for some positive aspects, maybe she will give out some more laughs. Stay with us @deegirl This is the year (2021), fingers crossed.2 points

Don't blame COVID & lockdown. Melbourne Football Club have ruined football for me ?2 points

I stumbled upon and watched the GWS draft night video. Some observations - - Clubs didn't enter selections via computer, they rang them through - GWS didn't rate Cox or Perkins in their group of players they targeted. They must have rated Reid. They were happy to get Bruhn. (could sense some dislike towards the Bombers) - Chapman was on their list but Freo took him. They then took Stone who they rated. - They were going to select Laurie with pick 24. When we picked him they did a trade with Collingwood for their future 1st pick2 points

I apologise if I've misled anyone and it wasn't aimed at anyone in particular, maybe sickened was a bit harsh. I know people have different opinions, that's why we have discussion forums but I've been reading Demonland for a number of years before I ever joined and quite a lot of the time I've opened a thread it seems the discussion aint about a differing opinion but a personal attack. I don't even let my boss personally attack me and I've known him for over 30 years. Sorry if I've blabbered on.2 points

Good luck Aaron it has been an awful start to your career, I hope that you have some luck this pre-season and that you can at least show us some of your tricks in 2021.2 points
