  1. He did some good things, but he should have been removed after his “King Kong” reference. It was disgraceful, as was the Treloar contract

  4. Love him or hate him you can admire him for the love he has for his club. To help his club when it was in financial trouble by becoming the President and building a solid foundation at Collingwood. Instigated and set up a home for the club at the old Olympic swimming pool and with help from the state government a training ground close to the MCG which they call home. 22 years as President I say Well done Eddie you went out help your club to survive and be viable. You certainly love your club.

  6. Every time people worry about size, I remind myself that of the 4 players who have played 400+ games, two of them were genuine smalls in Kevin Bartlett and Boomer Harvey. If you're good enough, size doesn't matter.

  7. Parish is a good footballer, was always going to be. It's wrong to call him list filler. He was the safe pick... He's just not the quality of Oliver and I'm happy we took the gamble with him.

  11. LATEST LIST HERE: 19 November 2021 Update for the Petty and Fritsch contract extensions. The Petty extension is until 2025 when he will be an RFA. At the end of Fritsch's contract in 2026 he will be an FA. No change to our list or draft position since the last update. This has been an amazingly small list turnover, almost all 'forced' changes: Jones and Jetta retired, Vandenberg going on to a new career, Nietschke had a long term injury, Bradtke (I think) had no more years left as a rookie. So only true delisting were one from the senior list (Hore) and two from the rookie list (Lockhart and Declase). A very stable list, one which just won a Premiership!

  12. I stumbled upon and watched the GWS draft night video. Some observations - - Clubs didn't enter selections via computer, they rang them through - GWS didn't rate Cox or Perkins in their group of players they targeted. They must have rated Reid. They were happy to get Bruhn. (could sense some dislike towards the Bombers) - Chapman was on their list but Freo took him. They then took Stone who they rated. - They were going to select Laurie with pick 24. When we picked him they did a trade with Collingwood for their future 1st pick

  13. Football is a funny thing. One win in the weirdest season ever is the difference. I rate Ratten highly and am impressed by St Kilda's bold recruiting in the last couple of years that has kept them out of what could have been a very deep hole. But... they have a bit of an issue in their lack of young talent which actually provides a really important contrast to illustrate how the Demons are placed. We've assembled an outstanding group of young players and promising kids who we can really expect to see improvement from. It would have been better to do that with one more win in 2020 as well, and one more straight kick in total for the season in 2017, so that we had three seasons of finals instead of one under our belt, but we are actually very well placed for the near future in ways that St Kilda very much are not.

  14. Casey Shire is the demographic heartland of Melbourne anyway. The MCG is so 1964. Other things that are so 1964: 1. EH Holden with 179 motor. 2. Red smelly trains on the Dandenong line. 3. Two shillings for fish and chips (just guessing on that one) 4. Melbourne rampant in the finals. 5. Jimmy Nichols as fill-in drummer for The Beatles for part of Australian tour. 6. John Nicholls, 6 foot 2 ruckman. 7. Cassius Clay getting liniment rubbed in his eyes during Sonny Liston fight. 8. Brown paper bags (with money for Ron). 9. Getting the cuts. 10. The drop-kick.

  15. The reports seem to say that Collingwood are paying the difference between Treloar's contract with WB and the contract he had with them. That is the sensible decision: to get a trade the player needs to agree and the clubs need to agree. If Treloar has signed an agreement with the Dogs then Collingwood either would have known those details or should have known those details, before they agreed to the trade. This implies Collingwood is paying the full 1.5 mil.

  16. In spite of all the negative comments on here I like Eddie and he has done a good for the Pies. I wish to God we had him in control for the last 22 years. We would have had a lot more success under him than the procession of very ordinary people we have had running the MFC.

  18. ALEX DOCHERTY at The Mongrel Punt Jake Bowey – Midfielder, 174cm, 67kg As someone who has played at the same junior local club, I have to say I’ve grown a bit of a liking to little Jake Bowey. But when it comes down to crunch time, this kid has got moves. There’s not a lot of him in a body sense, but when called upon, he attacks the contest at speed. He’s also a very handy player on the outside, with some saying he’s the most talented to come out of the Sandy Dragons footy factory and that’s saying something with the talent they’ve produced in recent years. As one of the smaller players from this year’s draft class, he brings great pace which could see him start his AFL career more as a small forward. He did manage to snag two bags of three in the NAB league in 2019. He also averaged over three tackles per game for the Dragons last year, playing both as a forward and in roles higher up the ground, so he can be very dangerous player that adds class when he needs to be.

  19. Imagine it how? The entire project is a tremendous rort. Instead of building community facilities throughout the new housing estates (aka future slums) they've taken the development money and put it all in one place. Then they've splashed out on getting semi professional teams and training bases instead of actually providing the community with what they need spread around the suburbs so local businesses can merge in with facilities. It's the sporting version of an awful suburban shopping centre with the same crappy parking and soulless vibe. Just maybe when they build the train line in 30 years it might stand a chance.

  20. Peanuts in the shell sold in a paper bag at the G from the short old bloke who lugged them around in a hessian sack in the outer. Forget shillings. Sixpence, (my bus fare in '64), then got you minimum chips - in other words heaps. It was a bit of a walk home unfortunately but happy to share with my mates who I used to play kick to kick with on the road with only an occasional car interrupting our speckies, balks and sealers. Fond memories.

  24. His 1996 and 1997 seasons were write offs due to the back problems... a real shame as he was at the peak of his powers having kicked 77 and 79 goals in 94/95. His comeback in 1998 in Round 2 against North was one of my favorite Demon games ever. He kicked 40 goals that season and helped us into the prelim final. I still believe that Gary Lyon is hugely underrated by the footy world.

  27. We must have been going through a phase of recruiting players with graceful names, perhaps assuming they would play that way. [As an aside, I had a cousin who played in the amos and was invited to a trial day where prospective new recruits were looked at. It was the same day as Robert Flower. My cousin told me that Flower was so obviously suitable to be recruited that they only allowed him to train for ten minutes to ensure he didn't get injured. Everyone else had a full two hour session. My cousin didn't make it but enjoyed his 200+ games in the amos].

  35. No doubt premiership window is an annoying buzzword that has been given silly amounts of imagined meaning, but at least the actual summaries in the article are reasonable. A 'bell curve' analogy might be more useful given that the concept is very much about whether you've got the maturity and will be able to train that over coming years. If I recall, the use of 'premiership window' was originally all about needing to get a premiership before the stars you have get too old. My differences of opinions would be - Collingwood are just barely clinging on to relevance. They had eight years of continuous incremental decline after their premiership and then managed to suddenly throw themselves right back into contention, but now that pattern of decline is back. They have 13 kids under 21 and another fun Daicos on the way so I wouldn't be crying about the future is I were a Magpie, but at both ends of the ground their tall stocks are very limited and what they do have is at or around 30 years old. Fremantle I just don't believe in. The articles notes their defence, but the Demons only gave away 60 more points than them for the season even as our dysfunctional forward line score 200 more. That the article so specifically points to Fyfe and Walters actually points to a key problem - they have very little mature, quality leadership to look to. Their mid-age mid-sized core won't make anyone think of premiership threat, though they are all perfectly reasonably players and appropriate trade-ins; Conca, Wilson, Aish, Acres. It's okay, the top-pick kids are coming along nicely, but it is hard to see how Freo can get everything together in the short term. Geelong. I'm in the 'too many old bodies' school of 2020 grand final fade-out explanations. Now they are a year older and then some, with Cameron, Higgins and Smith coming in. Jeremy Cameron, at 27 and 8 months, if the seventeenth oldest player on their list. Sixteen of those seventeen are in the best 22, as well. Maybe they've got one more shot at it, but at some point they are going to absolutely implode, and I already think the sheer volume of old thighs has been decisive. Other than that, I'd just slightly downgrade the Saints and slightly upgrade the Demons.

  37. ALEX DOCHERTY at The Mongrel Punt Bailey Laurie – Forward/Midfielder, 179cm, 78kg There are a few boys from the Oakleigh Chargers that will have their names called out and one of them should be Bailey Laurie; a clever little small forward who can also provide some run and dash through the middle. It’s hard to get a full-time gig in there when you had Matt Rowell, Noah Anderson and Will Phillips running the show in the square – they made getting to the Grand Final look like it was a kick at the park on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. But nonetheless, Laurie’s contribution to this amazing Chargers team shouldn’t be understated. He played seven games in return for six goals and averaged 15.3 disposals, three marks and 3.6 tackles per game playing more as a half-forward type. He puts in the hard yards as much as anyone else and has the innate ability to make things happen going forward with the footy, it would’ve been nice to see what he could’ve done in that Chargers midfield this year, he could’ve easily averaged 20 disposals per game.

  38. Mate, a very difficult comparison. As to skills, Flower was way ahead. Barassi had good skills but Flower was naturally gifted whereas Ron worked on his skills with the belief that practice makes perfect. Flower was sublime but Barassi was a human dynamo. He never stopped in his attack on the ball or his opponent. He literally ran through brick walls. He was an inspiration and the whole team lifted when Ron was in the thick of things. If he was taken out of the game (1958 GF) or was injured the team would often struggle. For mine, Barassi was a match winner. His coach knew it, his teammates knew it, and the opposition knew it. If I wanted a player today to provide inspiration and lead from the front I would choose Barassi. If I wanted to go along and watch a sublime player, I would choose Flower.

  43. Welcome aboard Bowey family. Congrats to Mum & Dad Bowey. Must feel bloody amazing to have a kid drafted to the AFL. Jake, if you play forward can you please tackle often, and chase very very hard? We could use some pressure forward of centre, not to mention that great field kicking of yours. Good luck mate. Hope your career is long and very successful.

  44. Think it was @goodoil that posted a link to a game involving Max Holmes playing in 2019 when he was all the rage as a bolter linked to us by cal. I watched about 15-20minutes of the game and I came away none the wiser about Max but super impressed with Bowey. Looked a cut above with his skills, composure and pace. Think I made a comment then that I would be happy to see him in our colours and that hasn't changed. Welcome aboard Jake.

  45. Welcome to Melbourne Jake. I am going to go ahead right now and apologise in advance for our supporters who love to judge a book by it's cover and write off players they have not seen play for more than 1 minute. If you were 198cm but couldn't run or kick, they'd call you the next Buddy. So errr... good luck.
