  1. Great Game, went with a brother in law, his first for some time in person, sat one deck up in the northern stand area, Poor bugger was not well, and kicked the bucket a short time later, so seeing this with Jacko has a special memory. He enjoyed the weekend in town and so did I. A couple of beers and a Demons win in a finals game, cheers A very good memory, something really good to recall every now and then...

  3. The whole game is a mile above what we have to put up with now. It's almost a different sport. So much more enjoyable to watch the old stuff and you get to see the skills and individual brilliance that made me fall in love with the game as a kid. You still get to see some of it these days but it's few and far between compared to what we used to get back then.

  4. The Melbourne Football Club has a rich history in the ranks of the VFL/AFL so while this season has been disrupted by the pandemic, we decided to delve back into our past to bring you the players and the numbers they wore on the backs of their jumpers (qualification - 1 game for the club’s senior team) starting this week from 1 to 10: Number 1 1912 William Allan (No. 9, 1913; No. 19, 1914) 1913 Douglas Chapman 1914 Des McDonald/Carlyle Kenley (No. 22, 1913) 1915 Johnny Hassett (No. 34, 1913) 1919 – 1923 William Allan (see 1912 above) 1924 – 1931 Stan Wittman 1932 Leo Nolan 1933 Noel Barnett 1934 Col Niven (No. 10, 1933; No. 2, 1935) 1935 – 1940 Gordon Jones 1941 Stan 'Pop' Heal 1942 Keith 'Bluey' Truscott (No. 5, 1937 – 1940) 1943 Keith Shadbolt/Don Hooper (No. 18, 1932 – 1935) 1944 Ron Kimberley (No. 21, 1939 – 1941)/Jack Compton 1946 – 1947 Ern Rowarth (No. 33, 1945) 1948 James Mitchell (No. 37, 1946 – 1947) 1948 – 1956 Denis Cordner (No. 17, 1943) 1957 – 1959 Dick Fenton-Smith 1961 Bruce Leslie 1963 Garry Byers (No. 50, 1962) 1964 – 1967 Robert Foster 1968 – 1972 Max Walker (No. 46, 1967) 1974 – 1981 Garry Baker 1984 – 1985 Steven Smith (No. 35, 1974 – 1983) 1988 – 1991 Steven O’Dwyer (No. 32, 1987) 1993 – 1994 Adrian Campbell 1995 – 1997 Sean Charles (No. 44, 1992 – 1993; No. 18, 1994) 1998 – 1999 Jamie Shanahan 2003 – 2005 Chris Heffernan 2006 – 2009 Simon Buckley 2010 - 2011 Matthew Warnock (No. 37, 2006-2009) 2015 - 2018 Jesse Hogan 2019 - Steven May Number 2 1912 Harry Brereton (No. 7, 1915) 1913 Algernon Millhouse 1914 William Quinn 1915 Percy Rodriguez 1919 – 1920 Eric Tonkin 1921 – 1924 Joe Flanagan 1925 Clarrie Wyatt 1928 PB ‘Barney’ Wood 1929 – 1934 Wyn Murray 1934 Joe Kinnear (No. 17, 1932; No. 15, 1933; No. 36, 1935; No. 6, 1936 – 1937 1935 Colin Niven (No. 10, 1933; No. 1, 1934) 1936 – 1939 Lou Reiffel 1939 – 1940, 1942 – 1946 Roy Dowsing 1947 David Newman 1948 – 1955 Robert McKenzie Snr 1958 – 1963 Alan Rowarth 1966 – 1967 Robert Stewart 1968 Robert Dowsing (No. 38, 1966 – 1967) 1969 – 1970 Denis Clark (No. 38, 1968; No. 17, 1971 – 1975) 1971 – 1972 Robert D. 5. The old cartoon imposer at the end. Johhno involved in the winning goal. Great effort from Williams to keep his feet, spin outta that pack and spot up Gazz for the finish. Noice!

  7. I got a few collects Wadda but went oh so close on a number of big dividend exotics. Reasonably confident about Sha Tin tomorrow but as always, luck plays a big part. The main thing is being able to have an avid interest in something ... I'm betting even smaller across more events so as to have more of a wider scope.

  9. Brock McLean . Another lost chance to develop a player into a champion. Colin Sylvia the same. We drafted well but couldn't improve them. Cam Bruce and Brad Green were no better at the end of their respective careers at the dees than when they started in 2000. Let's hope Tracc, Gus and Clarrie get a chance to become the champions they should be.

  14. According to Ross Lyon who is still in touch about once a week he is going well. Ross on Footy Classified (wed night) said he is most positive and is very grateful to Melb for giving Harley a lifeline. PS will improve our forward line as he has unique skills in getting the ball and kicking it accurately. I know this is an incorrect location but Zi would've quite happy for Ross to coach The Dees In 2021 if Goody cannot solve their forward line issues this season. He has a record of a game plan which was getting more aggressive each year he coached. PS He won't have many staff to deal with as all Clubs will delete some in the future.

  17. I certainly hope the hopeless coach is reviewing round 1 with every player with respect to the lack of spread inside the fifty, bombing it long without looking for a clear target, and two way running, manning up in defense all the way back from our end to theirs. It looks like we need a monster inside fifty who can split packs and kick goals. That’s if we stick with this same game plan as last year. Or a new coach....

  18. The WC game wasn’t a disaster. People need to realistic and understand how good WC is, especially is Perth. We matched them for 3 qtrs in a game they knew would be their last. Can people not imagine the anxiety the players might have had knowing borders were closing and the need to get home. Understandably WC were in a similar position but they were already home.

Remember at the start of the game the scoreboard would introduce who the umpires were with a cartoon of an umpire having rotten produce thrown at him, would never get away with that these days with everyone having to "respect" the umpires

  25. Tuned in at a good time. It seems players did everything better back then. Picking the ball up cleanly in greasy conditions, none of this fumble fest we see these days. Players using both feet really well. A much better spectacle than today.

  26. Probably mirroring a few on here. Johnstone's best was incredible; he was a player of extremely rare talent who I honestly believe could have been amongst the best players in the afl. Yze on the other-hand was a top-shelf player whose skills and poise could turn matches in minutes. Yze's body of work over his career beats TJ's.

  38. Terry Wilkins Kelvin Clarke Dennis Clark Marty Lyons Daryl Cumming Peter Thorne all played some good footy at MFC Greame and Ken Osborne, the former, a great player over many years for MFC in some dark days Paul Rowlands, Phil Rhoden, Obscure but played some footy at MFC, Marty Lyons kicked 4 on debut vs Footscray at the G. His son Jarred Lyons should be an MFC Player, we did have the chance and for some reason reneged on the opportunity. Now a great player at Brisbane! Good bloke Marty! Peter Thorne heck of a nice bloke and once kicked 8 goals in a senior game Is it just me or do others agree that in many cases the MFC DIABOLiCAL in developing and nurturing players throughout the ages compared to many other clubs!

  48. NRL island just sounds brilliant. It needs to be a reality show as well. How many poos in shoes would there be? Bubblers? lets get Todd Carney back! The place would be demolished within a week. Roy and HG would have to commentate and be part of the programming team as well.
