  1. So much THIS. I would not have cared if The Blues Brothers got off as long as Hawkins got off too. My problems with the umpiring and the tribunal (not just the ump fiddling but across the board with striking and kneeing) is there is no consistency from week to week and club to club. They make it up as they go along and maybe I'm a little one eyed but we seem to cop the rough end of the stick a lot of the times.

  2. Cant believe some have got themselves all knickery about this. MasterChef Australia....for the culinary challenged or simply unwashed is about the most watched English language cooking show .. .in the WORLD !! Let that sit for a moment.... I repeat...WORLD. Its audience is measured in 100's of MILLIONS worldwide. It showcases Melbourne the City...as the beacon and gastrononical capital of Australia. And so on this show that is very Melbourne.... they have as their ELITE Team of Athletes...the MELBOURNE Football Club. You can't buy this type of exposure. Is worth its weight in Saffron. Would make sponsors very happy. Go Dees

  3. The League's memo to the clubs said that since the introduction of the 'designated ruck' rule in 2017 the time it had taken for umpires to throw the ball up at around-the-ground stoppages and throw the ball in from the boundary had increased. "From round nine onwards, the field umpires will no longer tell players, 'I am backing out this way'. Instead, they will identify the designated rucks and then throw the ball up," the memo said. Here's a bit of a clue Dill & Steve... You think the designated ruck rule might have something to do with the increase in time. Forget designating and leave it to the players, if more that one goes up in the ruck pay a free. ...by the way in all my time playing, coaching and watching football I've never seen an umpire run forward after throwing the ball up. I reckon the players might have had an idea of which way the ump was headed.

  5. I talk Bull up a lot (and for good reason) and people may think I give him too much credit. But lets look at his stats from the previous few VFL games. v Box Hill (Played Forward) 3.3 goals, 20 Disposals, 10 marks, 7 Tackles v Geelong (Played Midfield) 25 Disposals (Most for Casey), 12 Tackles v Werribee (Played FWD/MID) 1.1 Goals, 12 Dispoals (10 kicks), 9 Tackles v Coburg (Played Forward) 2.4 Goals, 24 Dispoals, 6 marks, 2 Tackles Has been in the Best On most weeks and an emergency for most games I believe. But the numbers really stack up especially his previous 2 weeks. This is also coming off a limited preseason. Bull is playing the best football of his life and deserves AFL games.

  6. The injury to Weideman is unfortunate as his ability to ruck has allowed us so much freedom in how we rotate Hogan, T Mac and Gawn through our forward line. However, you would think that Pedo is the logical inclusion to play that role on the weekend. He can still clunk a mark and pinch hit in the ruck when they rest Kreuzer and take some pressure off Gawn, just as the Weid has. So, to me, than changes may end up being: In: Viney, Pedersen Out: Weideman, Spargo. Spargo is stiff but I believe Goodwin is right behind the tall forward structure we have going on at the moment and won't compromise that.

  9. Exactly. Not sure how much a commercial is worth these days but I'm sure it's not cheap. This wasn't even a commercial (which alot of people fast forward or go take a leak during). This was during the main event during one of the highest rating show in the country *. You can't put a price on that exposure and considering it was filmed in the off season no one can say it has any impact on our performances this year. I guarantee you the players featured aren't walking around like they're George Clooney or Brad Pitt today because they were on Masterchef last night. * Last Wednesday Night's Ratings (this weeks not available yet) Wednesday 9 May 2018 1 SEVEN NEWS / TODAY TONIGHT 1,022,000 2 SEVEN NEWS 996,000 3 NINE NEWS 952,000 4 NINE NEWS 6:30 927,000 5 MASTERCHEF AUSTRALIA 910,000

  11. Whilst I agree that Bull should be next in line going by form, the thing that puts Pedersen ahead is his ability to ruck. I don't think we want T Mac pinch hitting in the ruck at the moment as he's giving us too much in other areas of the ground, so for balance Pedersen will probably get the call up ahead of him.

  13. It seems to me that Bartlett is probably an ideal person for the job as President. He comes with a footy background having played at the highest level in WA. So he understands and knows footy and footy clubs. He would also understand how to manage the range of personalities that are part of any club. He comes with a professional background in industrial law/relations. You cannot be effective in this field unless you are firm but fair. You need to be able to understand the views of the other person or the other side, deal with confrontation, rebut absurd opinions, and to be able to reason and also compromise to ensure that agreement can be reached over key issues. Confrontation and total rejection of opposing points of view are rarely an effective "modus operandi", other than in exceptional circumstances. Most importantly, you need to be a good negotiator and be able to influence people, in particular, those with different views. You need to work in harmony with your Board or Committee. You need to balance both principles (the law or governing rules of a club) and practice. I suspect that he and Jackson have a very clear view over their job roles and responsibilities, and are in full agreement so that both can do their job effectively. Importantly, unlike some other Presidents, Bartlett is not a person that hogs the limelight. This would suggest that his ego does not get in the way of his role within the club or with the AFL and external parties. An important, if not the most important role of the President, is to work with the Board or Committee. To oversee the Board and to assist in achieving common goals for the benefit of the club. A good President does this. A poor President tries to take over the role of the Board or will intervene inappropriately when it is not required. The latter will more often than not, exercise power and authority because ""He is the President." Clearly, Bartlett is not a President driven by his own self importance or ego. He is not a media person which is a big plus. In accordance with his professional background, he works behind the scenes to achieve the best outcome for his client (in this case, the Club) Bartlett is a conciliator that attempts to influence the decision making process and only intervene when required. Usually a good President works in harmony with others. In particular, with his or her Chief Operating Officer. The effectiveness of both individuals is influenced by their working relationship and cooperation. One can only undertake his/her role effectively with the help of the other. Having an outstanding CEO such as Jackson must make life much easier for Bartlett, and, at the same time, Jackson's effectiveness has been enhanced by being allowed to undertake his role freely without intervention from Bartlett. If you think of the Norm Smith days, Norm was an effective coach whilst he had the support of the President and Board. The relationship between coach and Board or Committee was always difficult due to Norm's personality and his attitude of ""my way or the highway."" That was effective for a time due to the success of the Club, but could not be sustained Having an effective President and CEO means there is less friction and disharmony at Board level. In conclusion, I think the Club has been very fortunate to have Bartlett during this period of its history. To some extent, opinion will always be influenced by the fortunes of the team on the field. However, whether the Demons win a flag or not in the next few years, Bartlett and Jackson have together helped to establish the foundations for future success.

  16. Let me tell you a story about Masterchef. My ex missus, a fairly well known chef, featured on the program in one of the early seasons. On one episode, contestants had to replicate her recipes for judging by the usual panel. On another, she was invited to be on the judging panel itself (a final IIRC). In the one where they cooked her food, she reckoned all but one actually executed the dish properly. That person got scored the lowest and was kicked off the show because they were obese or ethnic or whatever compromised ratings. In the one where she was a judge, she reckoned one particular dish was just awful. Inedible. Especially after the food sits there for 2 hours whilst they prepare for the next segment. Anyway, she says to Georgie and his pals she’s gonna generously give the plate of [censored] a ‘2’. Whilst the rest of the gang agreed the dish was rubbish, the producers forced her to score a ‘6’! Now for those who have worked in hospitality, it’s needless to say that when a group of chefs (there were some others on the judging panel that episode) are bored and have time to kill, they may find ways to...indulge! So a few sheets to the wind and naturally rebellious, my ex missus brushed off the tap on the shoulder from the producers and scored a ‘2’ anyway. They had to re do the whole scene again! The powers that be manipulating the judiciary to the benefit of select individuals or parties - sounds like the AFL/mro/tribunal, ay? Masterchef is a bloody nonsense and has created a phenomenon of starry eyed, entitled bed-wetters of thinking they have some rite of passage to become a celebrity chef. Shut the [censored] up, put down your tweezers and get in the corner and peel 60kg of carrots, kid, there’s a queue of 50 people from all nationalities and desperate personal situations to take your job, you little [censored]. I hope Chunk won’t be forced to lie. No one deserves that. And for the record, I played against George Colombarus in an inter-restaurant charity soccer game. I’m 6”2 and was playing as a defender on Georgie. He thought he was quick, but my long legs were wrapped around him all day like an alien on Sigourney Weaver’s god dam face. After yet another intercept (with plenty of niggle) he cracked the [censored] and had a sook to the umpire. Then he gave me a mouthful and moved position! In a bloody charity game! Grade A jerk. We won 2-1.

  17. Gleeson refers to transcript of Ed Curnow's evidence: - at moment hand made contact with umpire, accepted made contact with umpire - Accepts the umpire was talking to him at moment of contact - Doesn't accept he was looking at him. 'No recollection, can't see (from vision) where my eyes are looking, Merrett's right behind ..." - Didn't say he didn't make eye contact, just that he couldn't tell from the screen and couldn't remember him - if admits umpire talking to him and that close together, doesn't matter whether their eyes met ... you don't need to see their eyes, as long as you see them. Happy for these Curnow Bros to play this week since they both seem to have a problem with their vision.

  19. I thought when I saw this thread that the one person who would object to it was you. You never have a single positive thing to say about the club. Do you have any idea what an hour's prime time exposure on one of Australia's most popular television shows is worth? My son's restaurant has Masterchef film there every second year. They did it again earlier in the year. They will literally get thousands of calls in the week after it is aired.

  24. I have watched him a few times at Casey this year. Against coburg he was terrible but against box hill was very good. He is trying to improve his short kicks and to get back into form. Those who have played know that sometimes you lose a bit of form. I am not worried and think he will work his way into it. Just like Gus and hannan did.

  25. We got smashed by Port in his first game but yeah he was probably our best that game. I also believe it may have been that day he was being vocal and trying to get his teammates up and Sylvia mocked him for it as it was his debut. It’s no shock to anyone which one is now our captain and which one is out of the league and accused of stalking his ex I guess.

  32. He might or he might not. The point is that he shouldn't. Because of the appearance of potential favouritism. It's a conflict of interest. That it's in a coffee shop makes it worse. A fair dinkum CEO would refuse to meet in that environment and force the coach ......... why the coach by the way? Why not the CEO or the president? .... to go through proper channels, eg the coaches association. What is the coaches association for if not to represent the views of the coaches to the powers that be?

  34. The decision the other night was farcical. There is absolutely no consistency in the whole adjudication of this once great game of ours. The powers that be keep meddling with the rules. 38. A couple of major issues that Hunt needs to work on IMHO. Some have said kicking isn't great. I would argue it's above AFL level @ 72% efficiency this season....BUT...there's a good reason. He is now playing a cautious / safe style! I believe It's his decision making and where he is running / kicking to that's getting himself (and as a result the team & its game style) all muddled (see below). Most of his running to receive is in low percentage areas of the ground, out wide very close to boundary. He is making life hard for himself by not going to dangerous parts of the ground often enough for the receive which will leave him nearer the corridor, in a better position to attack / run off or find other targets ahead of him on various angles. (playing too safe means he then limits himself and the team with his next available options) By receiving close to boundary most of the time he then either has to take a risky kick inside OR go up the line short or long. He is mostly going long often to players who are also very near boundary line continuing the slower / less direct route towards goal. If they do mark by this stage the opp is getting many numbers back to defend or the ball is knocked away over the line for another stoppage and again the opp is able to set up and defend. The coaches must be hating the frequency of this and the effect on slowing down their desire for the quickest sling shot possible. Occasionally Hunt tries to go short and is often effective but is usually going laterally to a player out wide (for example even when Hunt is reasonably well positioned further inboard between HBF and true CHB he will go short laterally with the next receiver ending up in a wider / worse position and having gained no yardage ....and defence getting even more numbers back, limiting the next receiver's ability to impact) As some have said already, Hunt doesn't have a side step or shimmy backwards step (a la Hibberd) to get around opponents in front or avoid tacklers coming from behind then kick around them on the arc. He is all ahead full and often all ahead full when he should have assessed and disposed well beforehand (knowing his limits....if he can't sidestep etc). He is then putting himself under pressure and ending up giving off a few too many hospital handballs. Confidence. With the above issues Hunt is losing (or has has already lost) much of his confidence and hence his ability / instinct of knowing when to run / when to go slow. Maybe also trying to over compensate!?? Often doing things in exactly the wrong way to which he once would have been. Ie., Taking an uncontested well in the clear and stopping to go back over the mark when it would be more damaging to play on and use his biggest weapon (pace) with options in front. Or playing on when he has multiple defenders around / in front of him instead of getting back quickly and giving off a very quick handball to someone running adjacent (yes others can assist with their run....he doesn't have to do all the run & carry!) or finding a short target etc up the field as quickly as possible. In short, i feel If Hunt uses his greatest weapon to more effect and starts running to more dangerous areas of the ground to receive more often..... then along with a stack of hard work (including learning how to side step / shimmy!) he will slowly find his mojo and be the damaging player we know he can be once more. So good to watch in full flight! Fingers crossed.

  39. This will be the show that reveals how Jack Watts lost the trust of his teammates. First he asks if there is a sommelier on set. Then, speaking of the pea soup, that he was expecting an element of surprise, but was let down by its pervading ordinariness. Of the steak and chips, that it was abstract but rarely obvious, and used too much tomato sauce. Of the bread and butter pudding, that it was emotionally complex with a hint of eroticism, but ultimately let down the taster by not having any real link to the the active perception it is signifying. Footballers will tolerate a lot, but not that.

  42. Finally, a thoughtful commentary on 'deliberately' 'touching an umpire: https://www.theage.com.au/sport/afl/sense-of-proportion-needed-when-imposing-penalties-for-umpire-contact-20180516-p4zfqf.html Six umpire touching incidents in the last 3 weeks resulting in 3 fines for 'careless' and 3 'deliberate' referred to Tribunal: Hawkins suspended and the Curnow's downgraded to 'careless' and fined. I suspect had Hawkins not been suspended no-one would raise an eyebrow about the Curnow decisions. The issue for most people is 'consistency'. The AFL made a rod for its back by toughening the interpretation of 'careless' or 'deliberate' mid year with the Hawkins' decision. Like the Tribunal did this week, maybe Michael Christian should get some evidence from umpires before making the assessment.

  44. It's all part of the mix 'Rocky'... As PJ noted when he arrived, we're in the business of football & I'm sure it's not lost on the club that on field performance is the priority. Things like this give us a bit of profile & after years of being the ugly step sister it's time we stepped out of the shadows & weren't afraid of being relevant in the football world. Who cares what others think. Don't be scared of the exposure, revel in it. Having a strong brand draws sponsors, players & fans.
