  2. I was at the Western Oval the day Plough lost his smile. The crack of Bone and Teeth was quite audible from over the fence Wearing a Melbourne scarf became quite a dangerous prospect after that moment. I thank "Balls" for that. After the win i was expecting my car to be a burnt out shell on Dynon Rd...Alas the Club Song was pumped through a very fat Pre Amp. Windows down wild Sh!t. i was 25...

  3. Ok, let me say I have a pathological hatred of the Hawks that stems back to the days when Lethal wiped out Steve Smith, Peter Giles and Allen Jarrot - all three concussions on days when our men were doing super jobs. I reckon my fondest memory was watching the Dees finally break though against the Hawks at Princes Park in 1984 - Peter Tossol played the game of his life that day with two goals - that was the equivalent of Matt Jones getting two goals nowadays! But having a couple of best mates, who support the poohs and wees, continually remind me of how the Hawks have won more flags since 1964 than Melbourne has won in their entire AFL/VFL lifetime, hurts bad. For that reason I want us to pull off the upset this week and for that reason I hope Roosy and his team are working overtime to select the right side this week and to do the necessary adjustments to our press. Dear Roosy, I have 10 keys to selection: 1) Have a player tag Sam Mitchell. When the Swans did so, it worked. He is their best distributor and also best at clearance work, so please Roosy, don't let him run free like you did to last year's players' MVP Robbie Gray last week. With Viney out, there is only one qualified tagger left to use - Bernie Vince. That means he doesn't play back this week unless Mitchell gets sent forward in desperation. 2) Re-educate the players on the press. I am not asking for it to be thrown out in the bathwater, because most of us with sound minds can see it has benefits when it functions, but please stress the importance of forcing lockdowns when the break starts even if it means giving away free kicks in our forward half - the good thing is that the Hawks only have four genuine quicks in their line-up to hurt us on the switch - Smith, Hartung, Hill and Rioli. So it will be harder for them to exploit us over-pressing. Please also stress that once the diamond centre square ball-up is completed, players have to run hard back to their opponent. Talk is the key - communicating down back is essential. 3) Play Nathan Jones down back instead of Bernie. Why. Because every week we need to think about doing something that mucks up opposition plans. With Viney out, Shiels will tag Jones. Playing him down back ensures our defence talks, gives us another leader down there and forces Shiels to wonder who he goes to. 4) Play Chris Dawes. I'm sure Roosy is across this already by now, but not having a third tall up forward means that when Watts rucks and Gawny rests we have only one viable tall option to kick to - Hoges. And that means when Hoges gets it, he has to turn around and hit up ... Petracca? There is a reason why every other side plays three talls. We all have criticised Dawes for not clunking his marks in the past, but at least he makes a contest and the ball usually spills and I thought the whole point this year is that with Kent, Garlett, Harmes and Kennedy we had an abundance of crumbers. By the way, Watts can still play as second ruck - it seems to be keeping him more honest at the contest, although Ceglar may try and hammer him, but it's worth risking and the umps love Wattsy because they know he's a ball player. 5) Tell Petracca he's on his last chance. So far his training form has been the best thing about him. It's time he stood up and showed why we were all raving about him. And please Roosy, explain to him that when he takes a mark, he has to get back quickly to give himself space to launch his kick. He's still playing school footy at times thinking he can pinpoint a pass off one step - he can, of course, except the AFL guy on the mark is a little bit smarter and can get a hand on it. 6) Play Jack Grimes. Yes I know half the D'Lers don't like him, but the same guys don't like Tom Mac because they didn't quite understand that in previous years the defenders were under pressure - almost all the time - when they went to kick it. I also get that you and Goody have decided he's for the chop at year's end. I realise that you have ended his defensive days. But Grimesy is persistent - he keeps churning out inocuous 30-plus possy games in the twos and then when you make him 23rd and give him false hope that he's close, he backs up the following week and does the same thing. He also scores goals from his wing and doesn't miss from anything under 40m - this is despite the fact that you don't rate him. But sometimes coaches get it wrong - look at Luke Beveridge and his no ruckman policy at the start of last year. Eventually he had to back track and realise that a decent negating ruck is a godsend to a side that prides itself on clearances. Grimes is the second fittest bloke at the club and despite all the rhetoric that he's a turnover freak, his disposal efficiency remains mega high. He gets to contests and he links up - he's not a star but he's a role player and you need it. 7) Play Lynden Dunn - Yep I agree, he's getting slower and older and at some stage soon Oscar will be better at nudging his opponent under the contest. But at this stage Oscar is just a development player. It's been great that you've got a few games into him, but his visual awareness of what's around him is still development league stuff, even if his tank and running ability is top-end. Go back to your senior player - yes he'll be slower but in the next few weeks Dunny can play on McEvoy/Ceglar and Cloke and Tippett. He might even be quicker than them. And with Salem out, you get a reliable kick from full-back kick-ins every time. 8) Play Trengove - Yes I know your marketing guys wanted him to return for a home game, but the Hawks at the MCG is huge. They are nothing like previous years and provided we don't let them get to play keepings off down back (ie: we need to get off to a good start) then we will force them to attack and they will be exploited by us on the break. Most D'Lers know Trengove isn't quick, but nor is Neal-Bullen, and Newton is probably the slowest player at the club, so giving him a go at their expense, will actually speed us up. And the difference is that Trenners is smart - he keeps presenting and he's a good kick. He's like Jack Grimes, except he's tougher in a contest. Start him on a flank and then give him a run through the middle. 9) Play Vandenburg. Sure he's only had the one game in the VFL on his way back, but we need his presence and in particular we need him to take Smith's wing and hammer him. Some D'lers don't realise that he's the second quickest player over 50m at the club. Now that he's over his ankle injury it's time to unleash him on their main attacking weapon. It's either him or Harmes and while Harmesy has been great, he still is a bit hit and miss. There's nothing wrong with sending young guys back to the reserves, it's what all club's do for their development from time to time. And because Vanders will be blowing, have him swap with Grimes midway every quarter. Grimes may not be flash but he will stick to a task. 10) Play T-Mac on Gunston. With Roughy out, he's their go-to man and that's means T-Mac gets the job. We all know that Jetta gets Rioli, so that means Hunt goes to Breust which ain't easy but he's got to stand up and not be bumped off him. And personally I'd have Jones (see earlier rationale) on Puopolo because when Jonesy tackles, they stick. Yes I know there a lot of changes and way to many for you to cope with in a normal week. But it's time you went back to your senior players (plus Oliver). Big bodies, extra experience and hopefully a better chance. And if it doesn't work, you can say in your presser that you were playing the three-time premiers. One more thing. I'm sure you are thinking about axing Kent as well and, given his rush of blood when kicking most weeks, then I can understand that. But your whole pre-season was based around a fab four forwards - Hoges, Garlett, Watts and Kent - who are dangerous on the break. Give Kent another go and show him the tapes of what he did against Richmond and how he baulked and settled before he kicked it. My seven changes and opponents Out: Garland, Viney (inj) Newton, Neal-Bullen, Kennedy, Harmes, O.Mac In: Vandenburg, Dawes, Dunn, Oliver, Grimes, Trengove, Michie B: Jetta (Rioli) Dunn (McEvoy/Ceglar) Wagner (O'Brien/Sicily) HB: Jones (Puopolo) T-Mac (Gunston) Hunt (Breust) C: Vandenberg/Grimes (Smith) Vince (Mitchell) Stretch (Hill/Hartung) HF: Trengove (Burgoyne) Dawes (Gibson) Kent (Birchall) F: Garlett (Duryea) Hoges (Frawley) Watts (Stratton) Ru: Gawn (McEvoy/Ceglar) Tyson (Lewis) Oliver (Shiels) Int: Michie (defensive rotation), Petracca (offensive rotation), Grimes/Vanders, Bugg (midfield rotation)

  5. I dispute this. We have not been bullied or pushed aside this year, certainly not in the same manner as previously. We may get cut up on the rebound/turnovers and we may need to improve our workrate but our contested game is there. It's just that we're still becoming acclimatised to being the hunted rather than hunter. We struggle when opposition shut us down in the middle not from being bullied but just from a failure to understand how we can turn the tables.

  6. The problem is not the 'diamond', or the zone defence. The opposition simply are allowed uncontested possession from their half back, through the middle and this allows them in behind us as we press up to waltz into goal. what is meant to happen is that we spread hard at half forward (hopefully locking it in for a repeat entry) and create a contest, or the next kick to the midfield zone is also contested. Even if they get the ball, the contest allows time for the zone to push back and defend. If the ball is transitioning uncontested in 10 seconds coast to coast, even Usain Bolt is not getting back there. So when our half forwards and midfield fail to spread or make a contest, we could have the 'triple sapphire' defence and we would still be a screwed pooch. Who had a poor game this last match? The half forwards and most of the midfield. The diamond defence is a good, aggressive way to start at the centre bounce, putting outside runners available for exit, or crash-bang extra bodies to thump the contest. How it shifts to create positioning for the incoming opposition ball - to press up and ensure that there is a significant contest - only works if it can roll into position based upon contested exit of the opposition slowing things down and making adequate time. The system itself is just a system. It absolutely demands commitment to make repeated contests, and gain repeat entries or slow the opposition exit. If we don't do this, our backline has no hope. They will get in behind us and kick lots of goals from inside 30. I would be having a hard conversation with the half forwards and midfield who simply didn't push to the next contest, or cover the spread, adequately enough. Do that, and I think we will challenge most teams and have a functional defence. We could also consider a Westoff style sweeper as a plan B if we aren't coping mid game.

  7. Sorry for quoting yours specifically, DC, but here's something that we need to consider... After Round 10, 2015, we stood at 3 wins, 7 losses, points for 701, points against 971. After Round 10, 2015, we stand at 5 wins, 5 losses, points for 1054, points against 982. Have we really gone backwards with our defence? What has happened is that when the opposition score goals, they score them a lot easier, which makes our defence look terrible. However, compared to last year, the amount of goals/points that we are leaking is basically no different (just on 1 point per game), yet our own scoring has increased around 6 goals a game. We have to be on the right track, especially as this is the first year where we have seen significant evidence of the defensive side of our game.

  8. Supporters get sick of excuses, but there are valid reasons. We're regularly putting out the youngest and least experienced team in the AFL. Naturally, inconsistency follows. Have a look at the age and games experience of most premiership teams. Add the fact that we're missing experienced older bodies in Dawes/Pedersen, Trengove, Lumumba, vandenBerg, and top notch young talent in Oliver and Brayshaw and we're not at our best. With Viney, Vince and Tyson not contributing it was a minor miracle we were within 17 points at 3/4 time.

  9. Classic line The man they really missed this week was Clayton Oliver.... His ability to stand in traffic and dodge tacklers like Neo avoiding bullets in The Matrix until the right option appears would have added much needed calm to a side who responded to Port’s pressure like they were evacuating a burning building.

  10. Ok so I have left it a while to try and reflect with a little less emotion... So here's my take away from the weekend, what I think was a reflection on our year so far: We are a step off the pace, we all know it, but when we win we would like to think otherwise. I'm guilty of being swept up in all the excitement of easybeat successes, but I have also tried to keep a level headed look at where we are at. We were never ever, ever going to play finals, this is a fact I have tried to keep in my head they whole time. Although even now I have a thought "well if we can just beat 2 big teams and Adelaide loses 1 or 2 maybe we can kind of just make it" But then I think about Saturday and reality sets in. It all seems like doom and gloom after that lost but I dont think it is that bad. We are 5-5 after 10 weeks... And although we had our chances to win more games North and Essendon in particular, 5-5 is about where I always thought we would be. 50% wins is the definition of inconsistant and I guess we should have all seen that coming. We have built a list that is young excitable and capable of beating anyone on its day. But thats the thing, we can only seem to win on our day. On Saturday we played in patches as we have all year. Most games we have taken our chances whenever we have had them. We lead the competition in scoring accuracy and Saturday was the first time we were below 50% infront of goal. Up to that point we were the only side yet to dish up a sub 50 porformance. It was always coming, it sucks that it was Saturday but nobody is that accurate that forever. Our ability to kick straight has helped keep us in games. Round 1 it basicly secured us an unlikely win. Unfortunatly we were unable to capatalise on our chances Saturday and it cost is dearly. -5 scoreing shots and 45 point loss, thats simply not good enough. The Diamond Defence... Certainly has its critics right now, and for good reason it can look damn ugly when it goes wrong. That being said I think abandoning it right now is dangerous. The point of the diamond is simple. If we can draw even on the scoring shots, we can back ourselves to kick a winning score (we are 4-1 when we draw even). So while it has been frustrating, over the course of 10 weeks we are -3 in scoring shots. That means every game we average giving 0.3 scoring shots more to the opposition... that isnt that bad for a middle tier team!! Yes, when we have been exposed we have conceded quickly and heavily but I dont think the scores we have gotten as a result have been credited enough. All we need to do is recapture our ability to shut the game down. That is the only piece of the game plan that we are missing! If, in the second half of the year, we can learn how to shut a game down while still in the diamond structure we will have achieved everything Roos set out to do nearly 3 years ago. We lacked leaders on Saturday. Some long overdue selection might help with that, we will have to see. We needed cool heads to prevent the panic that sunk in when Port got a run on. Whenever a team kicks 2/3 goals on the trot we need to flick the defencive switch and shut it down! We showed we could do it last year, so I have faith that given time they will learn to do it again. This structure makes it hard and its very aggressive but fortune favours the brave. We have been too late to the party every time there is a new gameplan. Copying Geelong in 2010, then copying Collingwood in 2012 then copying Sydney in 2014. 3 years, 2 years and 2 years late respectivly. Now we have decided rather than being like everyone else and copy Hawthorn to the letter, we will go our way with our list and good on 'em! If we copy hawthorn now then by the time we get it right the game will have changed again. The fact is we are 10 games into a new gameplan with a 50% success rate. Its been ugly at times but beautiful at others. We are nothing more than a confidence side right now. I think thats all we need to be this year. We need to get that bully tag, it is a tag I have dreamt of for years. I know it has negative conatations but it is a stepping stone to success. 3 stages to a flag, Beat those below, Beat those around and beat those above. We are barely secure at stage one and people are talking finals, we need to secure that spot then we can talk about how we can pinch a couple of wins and play finals. The next few games are big, but we need to be understanding. We all penciled this week in as a loss, and no matter what happens we need to remember that. Hawthorn should pants us, even based on our best form they are too good. All I want to see is effort and structure. We could lose 3 of the next 4 and still have a positive month such is the run we face. Forget finals dreams, forget being the fairy tale story of 2016 thats not us. Look for glimpses, look for effort, look for structure. It's where we are, like it or not. Keep scoring, give ourselves excitement and give ourselves a chance. But dont expect instant success otherwise you're probably not gonna deal well with whats coming. It's god awful frustrating and I wish we could get it faster but I still have faith, the path feels right, and the tunnel is getting brighter. Saturday was ugly, but it does not mean we are going nowhere. It just means we arn't there yet. A reality I think we all know, when we take an objective look. When it all comes down to it. Can we be disapointed about the weekend? Hell yes! Is it right to be dissapointed by the year so far? I'm not so sure. Holy [censored] I wrote alot more than I planned. If you actully read it all my hat goes off to you.

  11. A lot of the umpires just didn't understand Rod. They made some poor decisions based purely on guys rolling around with broken bones and internal bruising because they had stepped into the wrong part of the ground. A lot of people calling him a thug are way off. He was more like an assassin .

  12. I think Roos has made comment on our up & down form previously this year. When we have 18 or so contributors we are a good side. When we have less than an even contribution across the side we get found out. I think it really is that simple. On the weekend our forward pressure was down, Kent, Kennedy & Garlett didn't really impact the game & the clearances were halved when we rely on this part of our game to create scoreboard pressure. These are the two areas where in my opinion we have been winning games this year or improved a lot since last year. We are one of the leading clearance teams & were I believe in the top 3 for scoring to Rd 9. Contested possessions have also gone up & it is what they are building the side upon. Too much has been made of the diamond defence. Any defence will look like it has holes in it when the system falls down. If the ball is getting through the forward pressure to easily then its going to create holes in behind, we have increased our scoring heavily because of our press moving further up the ground as well as being able to move the ball more efficiently at times. Where you have gains or risk then sometimes you will also have losses or get found out. I think they need to find a balance with the new zonal defense & press but that is going to come with time & consistency as the players develop. At the moment they are probably struggling to maintain the intensity from week to week. Over the season we have averaged 1 goal more a game against than last year, but our attack has gone up 5 goals a game. I think you would take the pain of the one further goal against to score five more. People can argue that we have only beaten the sides we did last year to this point, personally I have been encouraged in our losses against North & the Bulldogs. We probably aren't a finals team at the moment but that isn't something to be discouraged about. There are visible signs of improvement & we have a group of what I would call elite young talent that may turn into Elite at AFL level. That is something to look forward to. At the moment we are a middle of the road team with aspirations to make the finals, if we don't make them this year so be it. I don't think that means its a false dawn.

  15. Remember him speaking at a sportsman night a number of years ago. He was asked from the floor if he regretted the 'Wallace' incident. His answer was, my only regret is that I should have hit him harder. Apparently 'Hollywood' Wallace wasn't the most popular bloke going around, even among his own team mates.

  16. You'd keep Neal-Bullen ? I thought he was terrible and just looks completely off the pace of AFL footy. He's a fumbler and makes ordinary decisions and disposal under pressure. He's the opposite to Oliver in traffic. He was good against Geelong last year, because he was played as a forward and was OK with time and space. And he was OK running onto the footy near goals. But he's not ready as a pure mid at AFL level - yet. He may, or may not be in time.

  17. Just a silly comment. He ran 2.97 seconds for 20 metres, which is considered good pace. His bio's said he had good pace. And if he was "too slow" recruiters wouldn't have drafted him at pick 2 and he wouldn't have been labelled in SA as the best junior since Buckley. That said, Sam Mitchell is slow. Luke Hodge is slow. Scott Pendlebury is slow. Patrick Cripps was considered by some to be slow (although he's OK in my eyes). Jimmy Bartel is slow. If you're good enough you're quick enough. That said, I repeat, Trengove wasn't slow at 18.

  22. It's never good to lose a player of Jack's importance, but I disagree in relation to the timing. I think the timing of the injury may not be as bad as it could've been. In the next month, we have the bye, Hawks, Swans (SCG) and Pies. With the bye he misses only three games instead of four. You would also think we'd be fairly long odds to beat the Hawks and Swans even with Viney. So for me he is only missing one 50-50 game (Pies) when it could've been four. And the Pies have their fair share of injuries as well.

  28. Do you remember how bad we were in 2013? We won 2 games, 50% - we would've only won 1 game (luckily against a fast finishing Bulldogs) if GWS weren't still finding their feet. What Roos has had to achieve compared to Bolton and Beveridge is incomparable. EDIT: They also had Murphy, Gibbs, Kreuzer, Walker, Curnow, Simpson - they also made finals in 2009-11, not just by default in 2013.

  29. I wonder just how many of these threads we can have running at the same time. Ah, desperation and despair - there's no substitute really. The hardest part of being a Demon supporter is listening to the terminal pessimism that spews forth after every loss. We are improving. We are better than last year. we are 5 and 5 after 10 rounds. Our average losing margin has just about halved. We have scored 100+ points in five games. How is that not an improvement?

  30. A lot of the coaches votes on Saturday went to Ebert, Wingard, Gray and Pittard. All midfielders. That's where we lost it. Sure Dixon got 6 votes for kicking 5 goals, but the midfielders got it down to him.

  31. Nope. We're building a very good list. Young, inconsistent, frustrating, inexperienced... But very, very talented. We haven't played two terrible matches in a row this year- let's see how this weekend plays out.

  32. Note to self.... whenever we lose, avoid this place like the plague. It never ceases to amaze me how quickly the mood changes from one extreme to another off the back of wins or losses. Why can there never be some rational middle ground? I'll let you get back to the wrist slashing now....

  33. didn't we focus on defence for the first 2 years to get it right, then move on to offence this year? seems we didn't get it right or we threw it away
    3 points
  34. it's not another false dawn in any way shape and form, we've been steadily improving for the last three years. we are inconsistent because it's a new game plan and we have the youngest and most inexperienced 22 in the comp.. our best is very good, our worst is very average that's just what happens with young teams, look at the Saints, they look like world beaters one week and get belted the next, we're definitely ahead of them but the point stands. Our defense looks bad because they players are still working out how to implement it in game, combined with the lack of experience at AFL level making a 2 way transition running game plan very difficult for such a young team to deliver week in week out in any case, then you throw in the interchange cap, the conditions in Alice and the lack of changes it makes for a difficult day at the office, i said in the game day thread if we didn't jump out of the blocks we would really struggle over four quarters. in the last four years we've gone 2 wins, 4wins, 7 wins and now 5 already, there is definitely an upward trend there but we're just going to have to accept that with a list the age of ours we're going to have down weeks, but we'll also have up weeks, i wouldn't be surprised if we beat or seriously push the Hawks on the weekend.

  35. It's just laughable to suggest he broke fingers slapping Ebert in the face when Ebert didn't have so much as a red cheek. I once punched a wall with a fair bit of force (not full force) and had some minor bruising of my knuckles. The only time I've ever seen anyone break fingers by punching someone, the recipient of the punch got totally flattened. Come on guys, it's just silly. We're just fueling our need for conspiracy theories against all common sense by running with this one.

  40. We should be disappointed because we now know we can do better, and we've had opportunities slip. Comparisons to Carlton are silly, they had only 3 players under 26 make a major impact on their game against Geelong. (Docherty, Cripps and Weitering - definitely a great little group, noting 'little'). We were the opposite, with only Jones, Vince and Jetta being 26 or older and having a real effect on the game (plus Watts at 25 if you'd like to include). But we should still be disappointed, because we could be outright crushing opponents if we held our form and our workrate for whole games consistently. Ah well.

  42. 2 major issues Jnr A multi-method defence is too much to ask of so many young rookies still just learning "how to play". If we insist on playing rookies down back don't play moving zones/diamonds/blah blah. KISS principle pls unless playing a more seasoned line up in defence. Then by all means go for it. When we have beaten solid mid fields in the past we have done so by rolling our 3 major King pins through their for the bulk of their TOG during matches. Jones, Vince & Viney. Add Clarry to these 3 plus some cameos from fringe mids and we start getting more clearances/first use and tend to win or go much closer to winning even against serious opposition mids. For some reason after round 1 or 2 (or was it from the get go this season?) we have decided to use Vince in a bigger role across HB and kicking in. It is no coincidence IMO that our mid field dominance has wained as a result (along with Clarry's omissions when they have hit us).

  43. Wouldn't disagree with any of that, although I still don't understand why people do it. We are far too negative after a loss, especially when another team has a win or plays well. Instantly they have 'gone past us'. It's the most reactionary, and wrong, response I see on this site.

  44. Melbourne fans do this better than most. You see it in the gameday threads, around the league threads etc. Constant moaning about how we lost to this team or why we can't be that team. It's a talent that is unmatched by opposition supporters.

  46. What a player at his best, both forward and back. He played tall and as we know tough. His presence was immense both for his teammates and the enemy. I suspect his literary quotes to his opponents would have been short and not so sweet. Makes some of the tough guys today look like marshmallows including one of our own.
