Well Stiff Arm, I won't lie to you. Cornes does get me a little agitated. However it was Petty who put fuel on the fire when interviewed by Channel 7 Adelaide. It remains to be seen whether he follows the same path as his mono-browed former teammate so I won't suggest we heat the tar as yet.

So Jon Ralph knows for certain, according to his article, that we held Petty “against his will” and “ he is desperate to go home to Adelaide”.

Well I think if that was true, Petty would have made more of a song and dance of it, causing us to give it greater attention and secondly Adelaide us not his home, though a bit closer to it.

IMO, if Petty was truly desperate to go, we would have explored the options.

Therefore, in summary, I disagree with the article.

We will obviously try and extend Petty’s contract and that will be interesting, to see if it happens.

Remember when we should trade Petty immediately as he’d already peaked and was close to needing his leg amputated?

I generally stay quiet and just read this forum as I very rarely have information or am able to attend training (thanks to all training reporters and six6six for his excellent photos they are a lifesaver at this time of year!) .But I now understand why those who do have good information often leave and no longer post here.
 

My statement on Petty was accurate and the info came from a good source but because it ran contra to the AFL media narrative and because people were upset at the time I was jumped on. Until the culture on here changes and people can share info that runs contrary to what is out in the public without being jumped on this wonderful forum won’t be able to live to its full potential as many will stay silent when they could share. 
 

Petty is actually ahead of the time frame I provided, but he’s a long way from not playing this season. Obviously there’s a long way to go and chance will play a part but so far, so good.

Seeing as this thread has just been bumped back into action, I note that in a Jon Ralph column in yesterday's Herald Sun he commented on out of contract players at every club. He made it seem like a given that Petty would be leaving at the end of this season. Is that the accepted view?

fwiw, i've heard from a pretty reasonable source very close to people who would know that petty will still be keen to take the offer from the crom if it's there at the end of either this season or next

the money they have offered dwarfs what he is currently on / what he is projected to be on at mfc

knowing the crom they'll probably string him along then lowball him; they have a history of it

Putting aside the go home factor, surely if he has a productive season up forward - and the likes of Brown, McDonald and/or Tomlinson retire or aren’t offered new contracts - we would have a big sum we could offer him?

I don't buy into the go home factor, I believe in the money

But I'm with you, if he becomes a game-changer on a regular basis, pay him the big bucks* and match the Crows offer (unless that offer is astronomical and it becomes a murky situation) 

Ultimately, I see him as a replacement for May at full back as Petty is only 24 and has another 9-10 years of footy ahead 

 

 

*That could happen as early as half way through 2024 if he fully recovers from his injury and starts firing again

Not the best questions but seems Petty did the time trial and is mixing in and out of main drills.

The part about working with Melk and Fritsch in rehab was a good point.

He seems keen on the group improving their skills and I'd like to see that too, I think it will be a key part of whether he stays or goes. If he gets the delivery to kick 50 goals and doesn't get injured by having to stand under hospital balls all year he'll probably stay.

That's a good idea

If we're confident that he's going to be good-to-go, tack on the extra dollars pertaining to the existing contract with the proviso that he extends

Of course, our salary cap might be close to being full for 2023 so the breakdown of the extra $$$'s for the 2 years could be added to the 2025 component of his existing contract 

As you said, there will be freed up salary cap space at the end of 2024

So Harrison gets the unexpected extra $$$'s and we get to keep our man, long term

It's just reconstructing a contract which will probably become common-practice as the years go on

He's worth it, in my view

But it looks to me like Adelaide might have offered him a very big contract and that might include a big component in the first year of a deal (effectively, a signing on bonus similar to what T$ got) 

And as long as we keep strengthening our talent, year by year,  we're going to be in this type of situation again & again.  Comes with the territory

A fit Petty is a huge asset for us with his accurate goalkicking and the versatility to fill in if we get backline injuries. From what I have seen of him, he is not the Jackson type who will drop his bundle.

In fact, to suggest such a possibility is an insult, since almost every AFL player gives 100 per cent effort every week.

And contracts run both ways. Petty is guaranteed an agreed income and in return the club has the right to hold him to the deal.

I am hopeful that if he gets back on the field reasonably early in the season he could play a big role come September.

I also hope he'll stay long term (and another premiership might help), but it's far too early to be losing sleep over that question.

Considering this is a direct quote from Tim Lamb then there is no doubt there there is a huge go home factor first and foremost before money. 

"We had conversations with Harrison where he spoke about the lure of home and some of the issues around that, with his family and their ability to get over here and watch him play and be involved a bit more.

"We'll work with him to make sure that there is a better situation for him.

The biggest challenge for the Petty family is that from Wudinna alone it's a 6 hour and 5 minute drive. That's just to get to the airport to then jump on a plane and having to do more travel just to watch their son play on a Saturday or Sunday. Probably even harder when we've played a lot of Thursday night or Friday games because it not as simple as jumping into a car after work and drive down the Hume Highway like the Spargo's or Oliver's can.

Money isn't the issue for Petty at all because he knows regardless he'll get paid well enough. He's barely had family being able to come down and watch him live purely from a logistical challenge.

Whatever Tim Lamb has in mind in being able to "better manage" this situation, I hope it works out well for Harrison because he's vital to us. The go home factor is absolutely real with this one.

If Adelaide want him then the club needs to extract fair compensation. There’s no reason these situations can’t be a win win. I’m old school and still prefer one club players but this is the corporate, money driven world we live in. Although I’ll add that from reports it appears there’s a go home factor in a lot of these moves.  So in actual fact these players are moving to be closer to family,  which I guess is my kind of old school. Sheesh life’s hard to get your head around at times! Either way losing Petty won’t make it break us, from this off season it appears we may already be broken!

If Petty was playing for the Crows how many games would his parents / family travel to Adelaide for to watch him play. Considering 6 hours each way plus breaks essentially makes it a days travel each way. Would they make the trip for every home game plus finals or just the big games plus finals. All speculative I know.

Surely the club can be proactive in communicating with his family and arrange for them to make the trip for Gather Rd as well as blockbuster matches such as Anzac Eve, Kings Birthday and when we play the Lions. I’m not sure how much the club can do in terms of flights / motels for family’s before it’s looked at by the AFL.

Family may be put fwd as motivation, but it’s also a great leverage tool. Money talks, hopefully he stays.

Harrison needs to get fit and stay fit. Not a foregone conclusion by any stretch given his injury record.

I hope he overcomes his ankle issue and delivers a big goal kicking season for us. We can worry about the Crows and contracts later.

And as for go home he can return to SA when his career is over. Jackson and Tim Kelly cited go home as the reason but they were both well paid to move. If Petty does end up going to the Crows i doubt he will forgo any dollars to do so. More likely it'll be for a payrise.
