Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

I wouldn't be trading 4 + 5 for pick 1

I would in this draft. But I'll back JT. If he thinks the talent will still be there by then, great.

Remember, that it's very likely a North compo pick or NGA access dilutes the top 5, and then you've got the Suns getting access to another top 3-5 pick in Walters.

In other words, it's not really the top 4-5, it's the top 6-7.

Clarko said they’d (Norf) be up for a trade to build their list. In delightful Clarko speak, he pondered “how many no#1 draft pick have won a flag? …. Three”. So everything is on the table.

Today's results are certainly great news for MFC.  Opens up our options.  WC need multiple first rounds picks as we did in 2013........  splitting our number 1 pick went along way to rebuilding our list....... a super important step to building our premiership list.  No doubt WC are very aware of this.

Reid becomes a real and live option again.  Whether it can be done and whether this is the direction the MFC wants to go, only time will tell.  But what we do know is that we have been interested enough to pursue Reid as a possible payday for our 2023 draft bonanza.  It is a fact that we have put in enormous time and effort to make this a possibility of happening.

The MFC has options on how to spend its bonanza everywhere.

This is the honey train draft/trade period for us.  Whatever direction we end up taking.......... if we nail it, we set our football club up for a decade.  We give ourselves the opportunity to create a genuine dynasty.

I am just so excited.

OK looks like I may have spoken to soon!

But then again, as DLs have posted above........ maybe it makes no difference.

I am still super excited!

We won't have more than 3 picks in the draft when you factor Daniel Turner upgrade to the senior list in 2024. One of them will probably be K Brown as a senior/rookie pick. So I understand why we want to package them and dry for one. However, it's looking like West Coast are in the box seat over Adelaide. So North will finish last. No Reid deal unfortunately. So let's get 2 top ten players from Duursma, McKercher, Watson or O'Connor and go from there.

Hi draft enthusiasts. Can you walk me through how we could possibly get him, but more importantly - why would teams (ie: West Coast) want to trade with us so that we 'could' get him, what's the benefit to them?

For some reason, this stuff never sticks in my prefrontal cortex.

In all seriousness, I can’t see how this will happen now. They’ll likely only trade down if they can get the local lad Curtin. His stocks have risen and he likely won’t be there for them at pick 4/5. If he’s off the table, then I’d think Reid is off the table.

More likely now they either take Reid or Curtin with pick 1 rather than trade it.

Westcoast’s list is in a putrid state. They need bulk early picks to regenerate. No use getting a star with pick 1 if he’ll leave like JHF after a year or 2 cos he’s sick of being obliterated weekly. They’re better off getting 2 or 3 vey good players to lift the level, rather than 1 elite.

Westcoast last year applied the strategy of trading pick 2 for 2 later first rounders, and appear to be more than open to doing similar this year.

Conversely, we’re in a position where we don’t need much list turnover and already have a lot of talent in most positions. As we are limited to selecting 22 on game day, we’re better off consolidating the quantity of talent that comes with each pick, by trading for a sure-thing. We’d rather have 1 elite player in the side over 1 very good player in the side and another 2 at Casey. Depth is great to have but only to a point.

In theory.

Why is this so often seen as a given?

I think a lot is going to depend on what package if any the AFL hand North. I hope they don’t get pick 3 for McKay. But if they get access to Sanders they will want as many picks in the top 6/7 as possible as they will want picks before someone calls his name out.

If WC want Curtin and can trade 1 for another pick that still gets him and they get a bonus pick or two, that is clearly better for them.

Curtin is a WA boy at 195 cms who can play midfield and key forward or back. He is apparently their main target.

If nobody trades with WC, they use pick 1 on him and that is it.

How we get Reid, if he is our main target, is up to JT convincing WC to trade.

The dangers seem to be North and Hawks threatening to take Curtin.

Curtin would have to convince those clubs, he would do a JHF in 2 years and that it is therefore their risk to select him.

I agree, my mock draft as is image.png.97a71a627f7a78a5a53f92da1caf25a6.png

Possibly swap McKercher with O'Sullivan based on need, which pushes all draftees down 1 position.

Where there is smoke, there's fire, and West Coast need multiple decent players, not just one potential gun

They (Eagles) might be interested in proven talent with any of their picks as well ... much like what we did when using numerous 1st & 2nd round picks over the years for established talent (May, Lever, Langdon, Brown, Melksham, Hibberd, Grundy & Hunter) ... as well as those traded for players who have come and gone

The Eagles need to stop the bleeding and they need to win games so they need players who can play now (much like when we needed the same)

So GNF is probably on the money ... an in-principle agreement for pick #1 is probably on the table

The question is, how much we're prepared to give up for pick #1? If Reid turns out to be an out and out star player, paying overs is no big deal at all

So #5 and 2 late first rounders should be enough but the deal could be quite complex and we might have to deal with another club first to satisfy the Eagles

But it shouldn't be forgotten that we can't put all our eggs in one basket up forward with just JVR, Petty and maybe Jefferson

So we'll need another KPF as well you'd imagine ... and May isn't getting any younger either so Petty might be a better fit at FB (down the track)

So if we're in the market for an established KPF, (or at least a KPF who has real potential) that's going to cost us as well

In Taylor we trust

You can see how compromised this draft could potentially be.

Just a note on your order, GC have pick 4 (pick 6 in your mock) and will presumably trade it out... so there will be another selection between Hawks and Melbourne with the GC Read bid notwithstanding. Might be us, might be another team. If your general order stays then we miss out on Duursma and we're looking at prospects from Caddy onwards.

UNDER THE PUMP by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
