Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Our biggest Achilles heal, that was evident even in the first 10 games last year, was not being able to run out quarters and especially games. The biggest takeaway for me tonight is we looked like we could play a fifth quarter, which is always easier when 50 points up, but still a big positive.

I also wonder whether we have finally found another unicorn in the form of a 50-70 goal small forward ala Jeff farmer. Based on recent form, kozzie can kick 50+, very differently to the wiz who never ventured far north of the 50m arc but potentially just as, if not more, damaging pinch hitting in the midfield as playing forward. Have to ensure we have him for at least the next 4 years while the window is wide open

Interesting TOG stats.

Lever, Petty and Tomlinson all 100%. Next was Langdon on 89%. Which means everyone other than our three key defenders got at least 11% time on the bench.

IIRC we often had Langdon and other runners in the 90s for TOG last year. I’m hoping we learnt some lessons about resting players.

Should (maybe) be 1 week. Careless, medium, high. I think the reason Smith gets up is that it was shoulder to shoulder, so the impact actually was low, but MRO will upgrade it to medium given the potential for harm

But yes, generally players from clubs like us get made examples of (eg Chandler’s tackle last year).

So many players from other clubs get off for more all the time.   If Kossie gets rubbed out for that it will be a travesty.

There are players that could (and probably should) get suspended due to the potential for harm based on their actions.  The AFL usually suspends based on actual damage done, but watch the move the goal posts for us.

Time to hire Patrick Cripps lawyer.

That was a fantastic win. The Dogs are good, I’m a firm believer of that. So to perform like that against quality opposition is huge.

What stood out to me the most at the ground was the way we set up forward of the ball. Far more often than last year, we had forwards deep. Couple that with our desire to go through the corridor and we looked scary good at times.

I reckon we’ve found one in McVee. Looked a natural. Hunter is an incredible addition and whilst I thought Grundy lacked strength at times, his touch came back as the game went on and he is structurally critical to helping Gawn dominate.

The thing is, there were areas to improve on too. Obviously we have four stars to bring back in, but we were well beaten in CPs and clearances. It’s a big thing to win by 7 goals when we lose those stats.

Like last year, Brown looks fit and mobile and it makes him a much better player. Let’s see if he can maintain it. I thought Lever was immense in holding us together early, whilst Tomlinson was really good too. Also loved Chandler, who absolutely stood up, and Spargo.

The obvious sour note is Pickett, who is sure to be suspended. He has to be. We always say we have to focus on the action and not the outcome and that action has to be stamped out of the game. Hopefully it’s only graded medium impact and he only misses one week. Because he is irreplaceable and looks primed to star in 2023.

Based on the way the AFL has adjudicated in the last couple of years, it’s well and truly been outcomes based. If they took the right approach in assessing the action regardless of outcome he gets weeks, but they don’t, outcome dictates their decision so $1000 fine it is. Even though it favours us this time I strongly disagree with it

We absolutely rested most players a lot more than last year. I would love to know how much time Gawn spent rucking too.

I’ve never seen Oliver spend so much time on the bench either. Nor Langdon who looked confused when he came off 😂

Agree.
Looks a smooth mover and very nice kick.
As you say with more experience I can see him being damaging with the ball.

Kozzies kicked 40+ goals in both his 1st 2 seasons.
I doubt Cyril did that.

I see it now. Buddy gets off on a “star player” technicality. Kosi gets 19 weeks.

For one bounce in the 3rd qtr, we had Chandler, Nibbler, Spargs and Laurie starting in the forward line with Max and (I think) BBB. The ball came in quickly and we actually looked quite dangerous smaller. Loved the different looks we had across all lines tonight.

and loved catching up with the old man for a beer or two.

Loved the flexibility we displayed tonight.  So many players popping up in areas of the ground where they would not normally be.  For example, BBB and ANB joining the backline a few times, Maxy literally everywhere...!

Not sure if it was a function of having 4 players out or part of the new willingness to rest players and mix things up, or even both

Kozzy is a genuine superstar now. Please offer whatever he wants Tim Lamb.

Trac, Oliver and Gawn just changed the game when they decided to put their foot down.

Good to see Benny Brown up and about. 4 snags is a good start

Lever was BOG down back alongside Tomlinson and Bowey.

Just an overall great team performance.

Unfortunately Oskar Baker and Mitch Hannan are VFL standard footballers. Still amazed Baker got given another chance at AFL level.

Astute as always Dazzle!! Laurie is a worry!!

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

UNDER THE PUMP by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
