Looked dangerous. Got two good goals. Tried for three marks of the year attempts in packs when his job was to stay down and crumb the pack or apply defensive pressure.  Tried an amazing banana goal when players were free.  He was ok v Bombers but could have been so much better.  His round 1 game was the prototype.  Bring close to that every week and wow !!!

Another classic case for Tmac in defence and Petty up forward immediately after half time. Goody still hasn't read all the memos on movesGary Lyon was on the ball. 

JVR needs to temper his marking technique. It's not about disturbing 6 others and hoping the crumbs fall our way  BUT him trying to mark properly and the rest happens normally in crumbing and putting real fear into the defenders. 

Kossie also should be honed in he has tried for 3 years for MOTCentury and hasn't looked like taking one. His job still is crumbing and he is good at it.

And for the one he holds onto he will have missed 20-30 attempts and therefore likely 20-30 scoring opportunities. He’s a small, his job is the crumb. Every time he flies instead of staying down he costs the team. The coaches need to work with him on his discipline and role.

With Kossie he got his head pulled off to get a free, but the maggot AFL coach had already worded up the rest of the  Umpires who did our game that there was to be no forward line  free kicks to the opposition. The problem with that was we got one bloke off with concussion and another with a lacerated neck. They both kick goals.

Nice deliberate knee into MacDonalds back from a charge, and do both Coaches get to talk to the maggots before each game or just the one that used to work in the same place.

And when you are talking about               “ potential to cause injury “ that knee to the back, with no attempt to mark, deserves punishment. But we know nothing will happen and we know our Coach doesn’t squeal like the Bombers Coach’s brother.

Totally disagree. Their job is to kick goals when they get the chance. Every pass to another player is an opportunity for a turnover. This is the sort of thinking that caused Fritsch to lose his confidence in the middle of last year.

Petraca does the opposite, over thinks every time he's got the ball inside 50. I would like him to try and kick first more.

The umpires had nothing to do with our loss today, yes they missed a few obvious ones but I’m sure the Bombers would have said the same.

We were outplayed and out worked all day. Credit to their coach for exploiting a vulnerability of ours in the ruck but even that alone was not the factor.

Very disappointing as we had top spot on ladder up for grabs. Panic merchants in defence and too slow to move Tmac and Petty early in game plus agree intensity was the same as the first 3 quarters at the Gabba.

Shay is causing it?  No Maxy. Still no on field leaders. Coaching clangers keeping moves too late. ? 

Clarry showed the way after first quarter but too few followed JV tried hard but made no real impression.

When we play like this we seem so beatable as players lose their composure and structure. Needs to be a major Coaching discussion about our team habits and out of sorts behaviour.

no player above any other has a licence to just go for goals whenever the ball is in their hands.  Team play up forward as as vital to defence and mids.   It was mentioned in the commentary as well and the sort of thinking about Fritta was his own doing from burning his teammates last year. Depends what you call team play mate. Also centring the ball is also a top priority from pockets. Amazing how some players find teammates ( like  Spargo) and don't burn teammates !

BTW any kick is a turnover opp. If you use  that strategy you would have no one passing the ball. Please don't use a rash generalisation to overturn team football strategies that are time proven.

The thing is though, if he goes then we are likely going to have the silent treatment from when the decision is made or a non-answer for the whole season. 

I don't want a distraction as much as the next person but it's very much a possibility. I will be hoping that we now have experience in dealing with the distraction because I'm not having it throw another potential  premiership challenge down the toilet. Let's stay professional.

Well you could say the same about excessive hand balling in traffic. At least if you kick to goal more, worst case scenario it goes out in the full and opposition has to move the ball from their goal square. Similarly if it is a behind, and you can still maintain pressure and set behind the ball in those instances.

Totally agree. We are so much more effective as a forward line when we lower our eyes.

There was a mountain of selfish plays by a lot of players on the weekend.

Give me boring, short, centering passes into team mates front and square any day.

Blazing away from the boundary and ruckmen trying to kick massive running goals are the low percentage options. And it must drive team mates nuts who've gut run into space and are then ignored.

On 360 a couple of weeks back, David King highlighted the emergence of analytics in AFL and how important they have become for coaches in terms of informing game plans, strategies etc.

I suspect Goody is well and truly on the analytics train.

And related to that, i suspect some players have been instructed that unless there is an open player and an easy pass option to go for goal when it is on (ie not crazy shots from the boundary).

Why?

It's all about percentages.

Logic suggests that the probability of scoring is higher in certain circumstances when the player shoots for goal rather than passing to teammate. And i assume this is reflected in the data.

Often hitting a target can be almost as difficult as kicking the goal and as you suggest, passing creates an additional opportunity for a turnover.

A turnover means we lose control of the ball. A point does too, however we can set up our wall more effectively after a point

And even if the pass does hit a target, that player still has to go back and kick the goal. Which even directly in front 30 metres out might only be say a 70% chance of being converted into a goal (less depending on who is kicking).

So, it is likely analytics show that in certain circumstances (eg right player, right spot on te ground, no completely free teammate) a goal is more likely if a shot is taken rather than passing - and perhaps also less likley to concede a goal on transition. 

This sort of analytics has been used in NFL, MBL and the NBA for decades.

In the NBA it completely changed the sport because analytics showed that whilst three-point shots are statistically harder to hit than 2-point jump shots (and of course lay ups), putting a huge number of 3-point shots up leads to higher scoring. 

So now, pretty much every NBA team shoot massive numbers of 3-point shots, numbers that were unheard of 20 years ago. Not only has this led to an explosion in scoring, it has also fundamentally changed the game at the elite level both in terms of how it is played (so much faster and up and down the court running - sounds bit familiar in relation to the shift in the AFL) and what sort of athlete is optimal.

Gone (well not completely gone) are the lumbering giants battling in the paint who would never take a three-point shot. Now most players are required to play multiple positions, have to be super-fast and athletic and of course be able to hit a jump shot and three pointers.
