We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

Farewell Brodie Grundy

While I don't completely agree with NC I could see Grundy playing a role next Thursday if the match ups and weather conditions suited. The big question is, how much does Grundy want out? Why can't we kick this can down the road for one more season? Goody has admitted that it hasn't worked 100% as envisioned but also said that parts of the plan have. We signed him to a 5yr deal. Would he be any less attractive an option to another team in 12mths time?

Who's he replacing first up?

Weather wise it's leaning towards being a wet Thursday night game, so already I'm putting a line through his name. His last performance under slippery conditions against Carlton was sub par hence Goody dropped him the following week.

I know Goody has said he's in the mix but to be honest I think that's his way of wanting to deflect from all the Grundy talk as he's obviously sick of it being brought up every week.

Imo they'll choose McDonald and only way Grundy plays September is if Gawn is out injured.

So you're expecting Grundy, who's spent all year trying to develop his forward craft and failed, is now a capable key defender for the finals?

I think most on here are misreading the tea leaves. We want Grundy out as much as Port want him. There won't be any hard ball on our part. And we won't hold him to his contract as a trade manoeuvre.

Didn't say l was expecting anything, just making the point it would be good to trial. As for his exit, not sure we want him gone, l think he wants out is more the point, unless we have a classy player coming in with that cash that you know of?

I do like your thoughts on the game Dazzle but you can be selective in your replies. I did say it depends on the conditions and the match ups. You know that there is a spot open so you know it's probably a choice of Tmac or Grundy. If they play Cox and another pure ruck then I could see the "possibility" of Grundy being picked. Unlike you, my learned colleague, I'm just saying I could see the possibility not the probability.

The major part of my post was questioning why can't we/should we kick the can down the road and hold on to Grundy for one more year?

No worries. Point taken

Imo I just simply dont see him as a fit for us during the finals series and think it would be a backward step in terms completely putting our forward mix out of shape with his inclusion.

You could argue our forward mix has never had a chance to show a shape this year. We've had some horrible luck.

I wonder why they never tried even for a part of a quarter having both Grundy and Gawn at the centre bonce and around the ground, They could alternate going up for the ruck.

I've addressed this before, but Grundy turns 30 next year and will still have 3 years remaining on his contract at the end of 2024. If we hold on to him for one more year, and he finds himself at Casey for most of it, no other club will take on his 3 yr $650k contract at age 31.

Who’s to say that if we trade Grundy the portion Collingwood pay towards his salary is transferable? That deal is between Melbourne and Collingwood.

They continue to pay us and we forward it to his new club is an option.

Cal Twomey asked Paul Connors - it’s between Coll and Grundy for the life of the contract. There is no deal between Melb and Coll.

Let's not rewrite history - he looked absolutely stoked to be playing earlier this season, celebrating goals and wins with exuberance, going in to bat for teammates, etc.

Yes but when the going got tough what happened.

Um... he got dropped after games where it could be argued he outperformed Gawn (neither looking great at the time, though fatigue/wet weather could have been factors), and has subsequently put his head down at the VFL culminating with a high-possession multi-goal game last week.

Beside the point, though, because there's plently of evidence refuting the claim that it never looked like he really cared. One example being his devil horns hand sign he made after several of his goals this year. That has all the hallmarks of a player with 100% buy-in to a team.

Red, if we have a fwd lined up that we plan on using that $650k on, do you think we drive a ‘hard bargain’ especially with our draft hand?

Who is the forward worth $650,000 per year?  I haven’t heard of one on the market from any club.
And if there isn’t one?  What then?  We will look for fair value and whilst we will try to accommodate Brodie we won’t be screwed over. We are trading one of the better rucks in the AFL.
In principle I agree with you, but we do hold a fair hand and will want fair value.

Agreed.  I feel that Grundy was and still is as invested as you could be to the team.  Seems like a top bloke and I've got no doubt that if he's picked he will be playing his heart of for the red and blue.  I actually didn't get that feel with Luke Jackson's performances in finals last year in particular, but maybe that's harsh and he was tired and physically spent.

Not particularly comfortable with him meeting with Port before either of our seasons are finished, but when you look at the circumstances which bought him to us, I actually can't blame him to an extent, although I do also feel that the Collingwood pushing him out the door vibe is quite different to the embrace that the MFC have shown him.

I guess in this 'professional era' of player movements that this sort of mature approach of players talking to clubs and understanding what their options might look like can be expected - if so, I just hope Grundy is being open with the MFC and Port are also preparing to talk reasonable suitable compensation.

P.S. I feel this is quite a different circumstance to a team trying to poach an up and comming young star from our list like Kossie.

I wonder how much all this speculation is effecting the team? Its  not just Brodie is it. Its also JJ and Harmes and Tommo all probably going elsewhere. I just have to wonder about the impact of that on the sole purpose needed at this time of year. This is on top of Petty and Melk and Dunstan going down.

Wouldn't it throw a cat amongst the many pigeons if they picked Brodie on Thursday Night. I still think this is a genuine possibilty.

This was always mooted with Jackson i.e. "he's so mobile he could play like another midfielder" and similar has been said of Grundy's physical attributes.  However that it was never actually tried in home and away, says to me it would be a huge risk to do so for the first time in finals.  I wounder if the club has ever actually tried it in match simulation and found it to be a dud?

To me the mis-matches and confusion it could create for the opposition around the ground during ball ups and throw ins could create some oppertities, bus similarly also expose venerabliities if the opposition quickly work it out and have an dangerous on-baller that is able to get free enough to reek some havoc.  Against a team like Collingwood that love fast and attacking ball movement, I feel that we wouldn't be prepared to take the risk, particularly when our own game is so much built around defense - we'd be giving up our best advantage.

What .  Are you in the media?

Grundy came bursting in when a dirty Richmond player drove his knee into JVR on the ground after taking a mark. Tossed the young punk aside.

He was also involved in a few other scrapes with opponents when teams were sizing us up. Silly them!   Grundy loved it.

Grundy is a Dee so keep him.

Grundy has been nothing but committed and passionate. He has done absolutely nothing wrong. Both he and Gawn wants this to work but unfortunately it hasn’t. If he wasn’t playing alongside Gawn I doubt he’d be the one dropped. As Gawn said he was lucky to have the C next to his name because he wasn’t performing either.

I am sure Brodie is very disappointed at this turn of events. He came to us wanting to win a flag and make a strong partnership with Gawn work. He probably is very upset at the thought he might be at his third club in 3 years, when he never wanted to leave the Pies to begin with.
I have nothing but respect for how he’s carried himself and I have no doubt that if he goes at season’s end he won’t burn the club on the way out.

UNDER THE PUMP by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
