I've been watching most games this weekend - and texting mates along the way when their teams are playing - and I've realised what a pr*** I've become. I've dreamed of being in this situation.

To my Carlton friend: I think you guys have something this year, you might make the 8 if things go well. Good on you.

To my St Kilda & Essendon friends: It's only round one, don't stress too much. I'm sure you'll win a few games.

To my Collingwood friend: Maybe you guys won't finish bottom four. You're looking like a 9-12 side!

To my Hawthorn friend: Impressive given your outs. I think you guys are building something (this text was given with particular glee)

To my North friend: Looks like you guys nailed a no1 pick with Horne-Francis, you need one or two more high picks though, so don't worry too much about this year.

I could get used to this.

Don't worry, I too have been telling my mates how [censored] their teams are.

I'm arrogant AF now.

Fortunate to have good teeth (as apposed to my picture) and when catching up with friends my smile says it all even if I accentuate it just that bit longer. My message is received loud & clear.

My family (Crows fans) thought I had gone a tad to far with enjoying our flag and plodding other clubs that I copped the famous quote from Top Gun:

"Son, Your Ego Is Writing Checks Your Body Can't Cash"

I don't say too much externally, but my friends and family are getting sick of the smug look on my face that seems to express the following: "I-don't-care-about-too-much-at-all- cos-Dees-are-premiers-and-the-rest-of-you-are-absolute-sh**".

And might I suggest it is a very, very satisfying smugness.

I don't have a hell of a lot of people in my life who care about footy. Most of them are co-workers, and one is our COO, who barracks for Richmond but has a fair few Melbourne connections. I always keep it very civil with him as you can expect!

These are all nice things.

I've been an insufferable [censored] all off-season. Now I'm just pumping up their tyres to give them a false sense of security before we crush them in September (or just in case our wheels fall off the last thing they might remember is me being nice and complimentary).

The go here is to regularly ask him about how the tigers are going.

Key is feigning a sincere interes, that is indistinguishable from smugness, in his responses.

All of my friends are either Carlton or Collingwood. I'd say the ****talking between mates has been pretty steady vs past years but I'm not as prickish. But in talking with other supporters at work, my opinion definitely has more "weight" now. When I tell people I go for Melbourne it's normally met with a, "Ahhh ok" vs the old "LOL you go for Melbourne your opinion is worthless" that I used to get. I definitely enjoy getting stuck into Essendon supporters though. But there's more respect there now from Carlton and Collingwood supporters so I've toned it down a tad.

My West Coast following brother in law who always used to boast about his team and sometimes mocked us refuses to talk footy with me since our premiership. Gives me the silent treatment. Not even a well done or congratulations. He hast mentioned football at all at our catch-ups since the GF. I can talk to his sons about the footy but he just totally ignores the topic and stays out of the conversation.

Other than telling them we're winning the next 3 I don't say that much.
When they start frothing at the mouth I laugh at 'em from the mountain top.

I did ask my Carlton supporting acquaintance who was  pretty excited if he's booked in for his  "Blues 2022  Rd1" tattoo though.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
