Can you elaborate on Joel Smith.?  Iv'e always had my doubts and saw a 30 sec clip of the game where he charged through won the ball then butched it.

Not representative of his game?  Hitting targets?

I gave him votes today.

he was very confident and used his athleticism and pace cleverly, and for the most part, productively

I liked his ability to defend the 190+ cm talls in the air, even when the ball is kicked to the forwards advantage because of his closing speed and leap.  He is then able to defend the smalls with the loose ball, using his speed and agility to his advantage.

I must have missed his bad disposal, but I thought generally he disposed of it well.

Not wanting to be Dorothy Downer here, but North were (and probably still are) the wooden spooners for good reason. Poor all over the ground, good tune up for us but we could have played ourselves and got a tougher game.

For a number of reasons Joel hasn't played that much senior football

He certainly has some great attributes that make him potentially a very good footballer. His practical knowledge of the game (ie: reading the play like J Lever does) and skill execution particularly under pressure has been questioned before which was probably fair enough

He is definitely one that might surprise a few if he can consistently stay healthy because some of these perceived shortcomings may disappear or become less of an issue with more game time

Whats everyones thoughts on Chandlers game?

I rate the kid but obviously didnt get to see how he played today.

Any thoughts?

Very average. His defensive pressure acts are miles behind Spargo, Kozzie and ANB. And when there's a contested possession, he struggles to get off a clean disposal.

I'd like to see Bedford and Laurie given a game in the next praccy.

To be fair, North were missing their 3 best mids in Cunnington, Simpkin and LDU. At full strength, North aren't that bad.

He hasn't had much luck with his injuries.  Really bad timing.  Had he not got injured in the finals he'd be a premiership player now because I don't think he did anything wrong before he was injured.  He's probably lost his place in the seniors due to injury more often than form in his career so far.

His disposal today was better than Rivers and even Bowey was not his usual polished self.

This is so unimportant...but...I really don't like the lighter blue Zurich logo. Much preferred the previous version which blended into the blue on the body of the jumper.

I think it’s a case of Zurich wresting back control of their brand guidelines.

We got away with it for a while!

Bowey was poor today, particularly his disposal by foot. I thought Rivers was poor as well.

Thought Bowey started to come good towards the end but I agree it wasn't their best performances.

That being said other than Rivers errant handball in the 4th Q there were no howlers.

An interesting tactic with Pickett being at the centre bounce for the start of each quarter. It got me to wondering if it was more about forward set up as he only appeared at the first bounce of each quarter.

This is what every good team wants - huge competition for spots

Don't perform and you will be out - no easy way back if your replacement takes their chance

Bowey 2021 says “hi”!

joe boy and ST - whose place would Joel be pressing? Bowey? Rivers? Hibberd?

I was very surprised our extended interchange guys got so little time on the ground. Why have an extended bench if you are not going to use them? Given the level of opposition today, it seemed to me the perfect time to give good game time to the likes of Hunt, Weid, etc. Maybe the mantra this year is that if you want to play in the 22 you are really going to have to earn it.

    WARNING by William from Waalitj

As a long term resident of Waalitj Marawar, I am moved to warn my fellow Narrm fans that a  danger game awaits. The locals are no longer the easybeats who stumbled, fumbled and bumbled their way to the good fortune of gathering the number one draft pick and a generational player in Harley Reid last year. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was
