Strange Chandler is in 23, probably sub, when he played Thursday and Baker didn’t play.

Chandler is not in the 23 he played in the 2's Baker and Petty make up the 24 going to Tassie.

It might have looked that way because everyone kept pouncing on me, but what I actually said was this:

“Jones, Melksham and Spargo are our clear bottom 3 at present. I think a case can be made for any of those threeto go - but only one of them. I’d pick Brown ahead of Weid.”

Still disagree though that the match committee would consider Spargo in the bottom 3.

Goodwin: "Kozzy gets a few headlines but Spargs, Kozzy, Alex Neal-Bullen, their pressure inside forward 50 has been outstanding,"

I can’t really see him worrying about the wording. Surely this possibility would have been flagged to him. It’s understood he needs the rest more than Melksham does. And Melksham needs to lift!

Melksham is veèeery lucky!  we have others waiting.Perform or else!!

I had Melksham out first, just ahead of Jones, and only based on last week. However, on the season, Melksham has more runs on the board.

On overall ability, as a forward:

- melk is a very good mark on the lead and strong hands. Jonesy struggles with overhead / lead marking

- melk is one of the better kicks to a leading player in the comp - Jones is okay if not under pressure, but I’m sure if you asked the forwards who they prefer it would be a unanimous vote.

- melk is a proven goal kicker with many small bags to his name. Jones just doesn’t have natural goal sense

- melk can run through the middle, but if I was selecting an on-baller I would take Jones as that is where he is a natural. But we’re not selecting an on-baller.

The thing Jonesy does have over Melk is the level of absolute sacrifice for the club and teammates, whereas Melk plays like a forward, a bit selfish, doesn’t mind the odd cheap kick, and doesn’t always love the defensive side of things. So be it, he knows what’s expected.

I also agree that Goodwin would not be dying in a ditch at selection to keep Melksham in the team. Yes, Goodwin brought him to the club, but Goody is one of many voices in the room, and right now the collective voices in the room are making all the right calls.

I feel for Jones, but he won’t be writing himself off, it’s yet another challenge for him at MFC, probably one of the rarest he’s ever faced - the prospect of missing out on success.

go Dees

Ok, they’ve dropped Jones. It was going to happen eventually but I’m really surprised it happened this week. Firstly he had a very serviceable game last week, not outstanding but he played a role. Secondly it’s straight after his 300, seems a bit disrespectful. Thirdly it’s a midfielder for a forward. Finally if we’re looking at who played a part in the win last week and who didn’t how does Melksham stay in the team then?

I’m happy Brown’s getting his first run, but I don’t agree with who us made way for him.

Would I be wrong in thinking that Jones said to Goodwin, " Put me out of the side and bring in someone new" knowing that someone new was going to be Brown. Could be the case

Great team, and a tough decision to drop Nathan. Much as I was keen for Jones to be celebrated last week, swapping him out for Brown and keeping good delivery in Melksham makes us a much better team.

Nathans future is in the hands of the footy gods now, and he’ll always get my appreciation and respect.

Ruthless decision and a sure way to ensure no complacency creeps into our boys work tomorrow.

Go demons.

Geez we've got 4-5 blokes who'd be starting for a lot of other sides who can't get near it at the moment.

it's a great place to be.

This is the right call.

Jones might be disappointed but I’m sure he understands. He’s always been a club first person. He isn’t playing well and we have the opportunity to make the 22 better with Brown.

Melksham starts this game IMO as our 22nd best player. If he doesn’t play well, Jones is one of a number of players not in the side who are pressing for his spot.

If melksham doesn’t perform then he should get the axe too

i like Bedford or sparrow over both Jones and melksham both now and for the future

I think Sparrow might come in for JJ, depending on how he pulls up this week. I've never seen Sparrow use the ball so beautifully as in the witches hat game on Thursday. But if Melksham struggles tomorrow, it could well be Sparrow for Melksham.

I think what we have to balance up though is the experience in the forward half. We don't want to go too young. Taking Jones out lessens the experience, but if we're being honest Jones hasn't provided enough in his role. We can do better. So Brown, McDonald, Melksham are forward leaders for young players like Fritsch, Kozzie, Spargo, Jackson and say Jordon.

IMO team balance/experience and selecting the strongest 22 should be our aim every week. This selection achieves this.

I think Goodwin will give those he brings in, a few weeks. This is Melkshams 3rd. When Chandler or Bedford come in they know that they can settle a little and wont be out the next week. Mitch Brown just had too much against him, so he had to go.

I reckon they'd love to squeeze Sparrow in somewhere, but not sure where it'll be at this stage. he's one of a few that's probably too good for VFL but suffering under playing at the best side in the comp at the moment.

Just FYI, anyone know how many stoppages Jones attended last week? Is there somewhere we can find this stat?

Not sure on attendances, but he had 2 stoppage clearances, so must have been in for a few.

Good selection. brown had to come. We are crying out for a dominant big man up front who can kick a bag.

3 talls up front is good to trial also. I think it will work if we give it time. Our fwd line looks much harder to match up on now. Fritsch will dominant on the 4th defender

It has to be a typo they wouldn't have a player who played in the game on thursday be the sub. North have the same problem Eddie Ford played in that game. Goodwin said he is taking 24 players to Tassie I think you will find it to be Baker and Petty that makes a lot more sense.

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
