Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

One of the things I want to do before I die is watch Melbourne beat West Coast at Perth Stadium in a final. A prelim would be ideal, but anything to scrub the memory of $1,000 down the drain in 2018 off my soul.

Tell you what chook.

Was over there for the Year 2000 final round where we smashed them in bluey Mckenna's final game. Was awesome being one of about 3 demons there.... Not quite a final but close enough for me ?

Murphy - a media koala who can get away with anything because he ain't the typical footballer, but seriously, who cares?

Maher - a blatherer. Not a bad bloke actually but suffers verbal diarrhoea from over exposure and relevance deprivation.

Cornes - take Maher's verbal diarrhoea problem and multiply by a factor of four.

Besides all that I am expecting a record crowd for a Melb-Dockers match at the G. We only need to beat 27K and considering how footy starved we are, and the fact we have had in the past 50,000 members plus another 12,000 MCC types who won't dig twice into their pockets, we should be aiming at 40,000 attendance minimum.

There is no current quarantine period for direct interstate travel so calm the farm for now but we all know one case from either here or elsewhere in Australia will trigger McGowan into another hard on.
I mean hard border.

Mate, next page over is this one: https://www.wa.gov.au/organisation/covid-communications/covid-19-coronavirus-controlled-interstate-border#lr

Victoria is a "low risk" state, which means 14-day quarantine period still applies.

To move to "very low risk" you need 28 days with no community transmission.

As to the impact of Round 1, they're not moving our game.

For one, the MCG is our home ground and for so long as it's available, we deserve the right to play there.

For another, it's Fremantle's only game at the MCG all year. Again, so long as it's available, and so long as the AFL's plan is to have the GF at the MCG, Fremantle deserves to play there.

And as to the season generally, you'd expect WA will keep the same rules in place until vaccination is widespread. That's not just political and pre-election, it's also largely because WA is not equipped to deal with an outbreak of any sort. Hence the 5-day lockdown after 1 case. They can't afford it to get out, so they can't afford anything other than strict border control.

Either WA makes an exception for the two AFL clubs, or they won't be flying in/out of WA each week (i.e. like last year they'll have to do blocks of games in WA and blocks on the road).

This is what the AFL should be doing. Parting a shot across his bow. Mcgowan is an arrogant [censored] so they do this before the election he will be able squirm out of it and still keep his popularity. That is make an exception for traveling sports people or get em vaccinated.

None of this will happen though and we will be the ones holding the stick of dynamite.

This is why I said this thread should be closed.  There are multiple subjects being raised within the premise of the title. Much of these are click bait.

While I can't necessarily  disagree with your comments about McGowan how am I to reconcile my feelings with the AFL's disrespect of Tasmania 's attempt to have it's own team?

Tell ya what, if we get the gate takings from the MCG match and the other Victorian home team gets ours from the Dockers match then I’d say we can come to the party.

Otherwise it’s a hell no from me, we should be coming out ahead if they want us to play ball.

Not sure why people get so worked up when Cornes and Co put up an opinion on anything football. I think it’s a fair discussion to have especially in the current climate and it’s just like pub talk between mates. It was only an opinion on how to get more footy starved fans into games and i bet there’s a few of those around.

I’m not advocating for our game to be moved, I want it to remain as is. For the record Cornes also suggested games after Round 1 should be moved to the ‘G’ from Marvel including our Round 2 game against the Saints.

Real smart; we lose our home game in round one only to play on our home ground as the away team in round two.

Starting to see why Cornes is not in charge of anything except his mouth?

I’m all for give a little to get a little. It greases the wheels. If moving the game meant we got a concession down the track such as switching an away trip from inter-state to the G (for example switch the Eagles game to the G this year, I mean the WA govt are going to be painful to deal for the AFL) I would consider it. Or we give up this game for an additional 2 extra games at the G later in the season?

I wouldn’t give up a G game for no benefit but expecting all games at the G is probably a bit too ambitious ?

The trouble with concessions or anything down the track is they get forgotten easily and never happen.

No thanks, as we could see in 2020...you take what you have now.

Next week is too far away.

You really trust the AFL with any quid pro quo? After decades upon decades of being screwed over by VFL/AFL policies with promises that thing's will be made right "eventually" I think we'd be incredibly stupid to offer up anything of the sort.

@Dr. Gonzo

Fair enough. Maybe I am being a little too naive. Best to agree concession and / or financial compensation beforehand.

Even if agreed to a concession or  financial compensation beforehand there would be no guarantee the deal would be honoured by the AFL.

But to be honest the real issue is that if the AFL decided to move the venue of our round one game they wouldn't even bother negotiating with us, or do anything other than pay lip service to  giving us some sort of compensation.

The problem is two fold.

One, we are a struggling club with little power or influence. The tigers, pies and even bombers might be able to extract some deal. But not us.

Two, the first problem points to a huge issue for the competition. It is just one more example of the unequal playing field the AFL has created by making profit their absolute priority. Sure income is important, but the number one priority should be creating a fair competition. And continually favoring the 'big' clubs and treating the other clubs like poor cousins is an anathema to  equality. It is a short sighted, short term approach and entrenches systems such as equalization payments.

The biggest problem for me is the idea that Melbourne (and Vic based Freo supporters) would miss out just so different fans can attend as if they're more important. Last time we had a round 1 game against an interstate side there was nearly 39,000 in attendance, granted that was after a prelim but this year it's after being starved of footy for 18 months.

Every Vic club is going to have to take it's turn at Marvel across the year. Ours comes a week later against the Saints. No way in hell any of us will get to go to that. Particularly given the Saints are interstate in round 1. I'd be pretty disappointed if we get kicked off the G, some of us miss out, then we can't get in round 2 then we're interstate round 3.

I'd say about a combined 5,000 odd MFC and AFL members will be able to attend at a rough guess. The remaining 23,000 - 24,000 will be St Kilda members.

The last time we played St Kilda at Marvel we got 22,000 on a Saturday night (admittedly both sides were very poor that year)

Whilst operating under the 50% capacity rule:

If all Vic v Vic games were at the MCG with a prearranged split of members.

AND

All Vic v interstate team games were at Marvel

That would work out to a fair distribution of games at both venues wouldn’t it?

It would harm our home ground and set a dangerous precedent, and I hate to agree with the SENers but it would be the right thing to do to maximise attendance. It’s too late to do now but shouldn’t the AFL have arranged this?

To me this is more about melbourne sticking to their rights. The MCG is our home ground and we were rostered on to play there. Non negotiable. Who we play is irrelevant.

The second problem is Mcgowan.

Essendon have officially requested their round 1 game to be transferred to the MCG.

Three outcomes if the AFL approves (which they never have in the past)

1) Our game remains as is. The Essendon V Hawks game is moved to Sunday.

2) our game gets moved to Sunday afternoon but remains at the G

3) Our game gets transfereed to Marvel for a 1:45pm Saturday game

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
