Spargo on the other hand is an easy target, he’s small, slightly built

Spargos lack of size has been consistently exaggerated on this site .He is short but noticeably bigger than Daniel who he is continually compared to .He would be bigger than both Chandler and Pickett and there wouldnt be much difference with Lockhart .He is not overly quick but is a lot quicker than Nev .This week is not the week to test the experiment but there is some merit in giving it a look next season .

His kick to Weideman in the second qtr (I think) was fantastic. He waited and waited then Weid led and he kicked perfectly. Weideman dropped the mark but it was good footy and if you keep doing it they'll start to stick.

Spargo is generally a very good user of the footy. His returns for goal assists and goals etc for a small forward for the games he's played would be pretty good. He can still go missing for part of, or indeed whole games, and consequently the haters on here carry on and demand he be dropped, and it is clear he needs to work on being effective when he has a good opponent or things aren't going his way. But a game like he had against GWS is becoming more common and as he gains in confidence I'm sure he can keep his spot and become a top ten player for Melbourne. He is still very young.

The haters here (and you've named yourself early in the piece) are just too impatient.  Not all players show up like Kozzy, Jackson or Rivers in their remarkable first seasons of footy.

I don't mind the idea of Charlie going back, but like the Dogs play Daniel, as an undersized half back flank, not the small lock down defender some have described him as on here. Spargo is also excellent at reading the play, I always wonder why the smallest bloke on the field (Daniel) often marks on his own, but it's all because he reads the play so well and positions himself early, but he can only do this because he's not played hard up against a man. This is probably easier in the Dogs defensive set up as compared to t total zone like we do. I'm glad he's getting recognition on her for his ball use and outside of Trac I'm sure there's no-one else in the team the forwards would like kicking the ball into them.

I think I am struggling to see where he fits in.

I definitely don’t think Spargo can be a small defender. He is too slight and his tackling is below average.

Midfield? No to a slight maybe. His footy IQ is good but generally his output is not great. That’s why he also slipped down in the draft year and his shoulder issue.  I can’t see him being a rover and in the centre clearances action.

So he’s a small forward.  He is not a Pickett type intensity forward but does have the smarts.  His kicking for goal has improved (he now can kick over 35 metres). Whether we can play him and Pickett together is a puzzle.

Unfortunately Charlie’s very best is just AFL standard and he’s another who may be destined to be stuck, as not quite AFL standard but better than a next level down.

His tackling is actually pretty good. He's strong, and getting stronger. Better long term bet than Alex N-B. Licks more goals, too.

I've been as critical as anyone on Charles, however I reckon he's made some gains this year.

I thought he was very good last week, particularly in the last qtr. How good was that lead and mark at full speed and then subsequent goal? The pass to Pickett was lovely as well.

Add a 3 goal second quarter against Collingwood as there's hope that we have one of our small forwards cemented for the medium term.

He's also a natural goal kicker and we have a dearth of those in the side.

Agree that his tackling is good, but he's hardly a chase-down player. Like vandenBerg, a great tackler if somebody runs right at him.

Still reckon he's shown enough to hang around as a depth player.

Thankfully his kicking distance has increased this year. Kicked a nice long goal against GWS from memory. I didn't think he'd make the distance.

You don't think he knows how far he can kick? :)

It is time to make the shift, Goodwin -

We should be using Spargo as our budget Caleb Daniel,

  • Good kicking (albeit not penetrating)
  • High footy IQ
  • Good decision making, composure
  • Not afraid of the rough stuff

But lacks the X-factor & explosiveness to thrive as a small forward.

2021, the year of the Spargo.

Charlie Murphy has been very good this year. He looks to be playing with more confidence, sticking tackles, making good decisions, skillfully hitting up targets, and kicking goals.

Close to goal.  If you saw the one he kicked to perfection across the wind at Cairns - has some smarts, not like the other dumb clucks.

Charlie seems to have above average "footy IQ" (which in itself doesn't make him a nuclear physicist) and always is looking to do the team thing, and appears to never give up (unlike some teammates).  He can only improve with another year under his belt.

Too slow.  Imagine what a Charlie Cameron, Gryan Miers or Liam Ryan would do to him? They would have his photo on their walls and the game date circled in red just like most opposition tall forwards do with  OMac.

Lockhart is the small defender in waiting.

Agree Dee absolutely need him Tomorrow to mind Tippa But won't be selected.  Need his speed and courage and line breaking skills.

Spargo played back in round 23 last year. Wasn't terrible, but it's not his go.

Playing a tiny defender is asking to give up a couple of goals just through a mismatch. It's a miracle Daniel avoids this at the Dogs and it's because he's off the charts smart and their other members of their back 6 all have size and overhead ability.

Spargo is playing well at half forward. If we want to get him in to games more we should start pushing him up higher to attend stoppages and then even in to the middle for short rotations, but he's probably not at that stage yet.

They might have to move one to the midfield but if we get Rivers and Salem going we might have a solution for a lot of the backline skills problem. All we need is competently skilled players to support them.

Spargo is not the answer down back. What we need is a 190cm racehorse (remember Osborne?) with muscle, mongrel and two good kicking feet. Spargo needs to rove the fwd line when selected.

More footy IQ in his toe than J Smith, T Mac and ANB combined. He makes good decisions. We need more pure footballers like him.

There are Siberian mine workers, with little knowledge of the outside world, who'd also fall into this category

Agree with your comment re being a pure footballer. Has got markedly better this year also.

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

Demonland Trackwatcher Kev Martin was on hand at Gosch's Paddock for Monday's training session and made the following observations. About 38 to 40  players down at training.  BBB walking laps.  Charlie Spargo still in rehab, doing short run throughs.  Christian Salem has full kit on and doing individual work with a trainer. He is is starting to get into some sprints. I cannot see Andy Moniz-Wakefield out there. Jack Viney and Kade Chandler have broken away from the

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to
