Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

The best mates thing worked out well with Trenners and Tappy so fingers crossed this one does as well.

Seriously does it really play a factor at a good footy club (GCS excluded of course)?

Brisbane have done very well from the McCluggage and Berry and Witherden Vic Country draft.

Plus pairing up Lachie Neale and Linc McCarthy later in their careers.

I'm not sure this was intentional at all. Rivers just happened to be best available in the eyes of our recruiters.

They were known as a rubbishy club at the time and had lost shed loads of good draftees this the need for that kind of approach.

I just don’t think a good club would draft a “soothing goat” mate to help keep a high draft pick interstate. A good club backs itself to retain players and have a good welfare team in place etc.

There’s a nice little clip which I’m having trouble posting here for some reason on the club’s social pages of Trent and his family reacting to his name being called out. Judging by his reaction it took a while to sink in he’s now an AFL player.

The best reaction came from the family dog, thought it was going for a walk.

I laughed and showed my wife the dog. Waltz in wagging its tail wanting in on the fun. ?

Is it just me, or are others concerned that we have just drafted 3 young men from interstate? We lost Jesse Hogan because of the go home factor, so why would these guys be any different? We have seen Geelong lose Kelly for the same reason, Dangerfield left Adelaide. Probably countless others. Hope I am wrong, but the warning signs are there

The warning signs being...geography?

Gosh some people are worry warts. Being from WA doesn’t automatically imply they’ll want to go home. There are heaps who haven’t.

I’ll stress out about the go home factor when I see evidence of it happening. All I’ve seen in Rivers and Jackson so far is two excited kids, who had long mentally prepared themselves that they might have to move, who can’t wait to pull on the red and blue.

Not sure what you’re trying to say V, how have any of those stopped a “go home factor” because they drafted a gun then a mate later on?

Nothing, really, Cards.  Just following on from what you said, and pointing out the fact we've had several groups of "good mates" drafted to MFC at the same time.  I just find that interesting.  I'm sure it would have helped those guys transition into the Club a little easier, with a good mate coming in at the same time.  Other that that, I've got nothing...

I like the look of this boy.. looks big enough to play straight away and free up Salem... for those still bent and twisted about not taking Young ... here’s Taylor’s answer.. could he be an Enright clone?

I agree with your view but I think this boy is going to be better than both Young or Enright, he has a more aggressive approach and had a limited pre-season along with glandular fever to disrupt his season but he still put in a great season

If he's anything like Enright let alone better...Well, Enright is one of the great HB's of the modern game.

Yes, I'm sure we drafted this highly rated player, who we were surprised was still available, as a "soothing goat" rather than because he's a great kick across half back (where our turnovers were famous this year).

People convince themselves of some strange things here sometimes.

I’m excited by his potential as well, but saying he’ll be better than Enright is a ridiculous call. Enright was one of the best HBFs of the game and a future hall of famer.

Maybe Rivers swapped teams late because he's listed as Bullcreek-Leeming all through pre draft stuff and there's stats for him playing a lot of juniors there. But might not have crossed paths with Jackson until WAFL juniors?

He was at Bullcreek-Leeming until I think u14s or 15s (won a flag with my bro).

Then there were some issues and that's when he moved, along with Jackson I believe.

For what it's worth my brother called him last night and he is absolutely pumped to be picked up by Melbourne. He thought he would be going to one of Brisbane or Gold Coast, so it was a big surprise.

Sounds like he fell through to us due to Robertson (Brisbane) sliding as far as he did and Gold Coast trading away their picks 17 and pick 22. Just shows that he was rated as a late first round/early second round pick not just by draft watchers but by recruiters too.

Not worried about who he's listed with he's a Willeton Junior along with Chad Warner not sure about when that changed

You still have to register with a junior club when you're playing colts.

Oscar Allen is listed as Whitfords junior, he played maybe 2 games there being registered there in his last junior season but he came through Sorrento Duncraig

Sounds familiar was the EFFC futures coach tied to Willetton, used to happen a fair bit with development coaches poaching players back to their clubs to build power sides.

New rule was bought in this year limiting the amount of development players allowed to be in a team. Rule doesn't come into effect if the players were already tied to your club.

I live Northside and know a Junior club President was eventually removed after years of loading up teams and ignoring warnings

Both of these guys are too good to be playing local Footy in their draft year. My question was more if they’d played together since they were young. Or crossed to different local juniors and joined up in wafl and state teams.

Either way if they are mates that’s great although we’ve seen it means little.

I think it helps a bit, with mates getting drafted to the same City or club

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

UNDER THE PUMP by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
