Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Tom Green (Drafted by GWS Giants)

GWS may have to accept that, for the first time in their existence, they’re going to pay a fair price for the players they draft, like every other club (except GCS)...

The thing I like about us potentially landing Green is that he will be playing senior footy almost immediately.

By all accounts, he could waltz past 2 of our 4 starting mids and we will be better for it. As alluded to in the Rd 1 starting 22 thread, we are still light on across the ground for high quality.

If we bid on Green and GWS don't match then this would be a huge coup for us. Green is rated on level with Rowell and Anderson. The comparisons to Cripps is real.

Drums are beating that it's looking more likely we will bid on Green and GWS really considering whether to match or not.

Unfortunately, I just can imagine why GWS wouldn't match the bid.  Even if it means having to match pick three, they get to claim the third best player in the draft two months after playing off in the Grand Final.

Que? I doubt he'll be better than any of Oliver, Brayshaw, Viney, Harmes in R1 2020.

But as you say it gets thin after that so I think he would be a good addition to the list.

If they all make it fit and firing to Rd 1, that's great, but we still need a rotation or two.

And good mids can also play/rest forward. TBH, it is nearly, the more good mids the merrier.

Making the grand final is the reason they can afford to draft for need rather than best available, because Green will really have to be as good as Cripps to get a game over the next 3 years stuck behind Ward, Coniglio, Hopper, Taranto, Kelly, De Boer, Greene, Williams, Whitfield, Caldwell etc. And even then is he really making them better?

If they don't match they'd have to be confident that whoever they take at 6 is super highly rated as well and if that's Young then there's your Heath Shaw replacement within a year or 2 and a major addition to the side. If it's Jackson then all of a sudden they've got a young ruck to play for a decade alongside the best midfield in the league.

also have to take into account that it's unlikely they will retain all those players.... First to second year players are cheaper...

GWS will likely go after Luke Jackson thats the word in WA they need a  Class Ruck for the future and have PLENTY OF mids Green is a very good player having seen him in Action reminds me of  Todd Viney with pace and a deadly kick has plenty grunt  and Attitude i think he is a better player than Rowell

They’d be the opposite to what they are now. Trac would be a star and DeGoey would’ve showed patches.

We’ve got a proven track record of being poor at developing players. That, along with poor onfield leadership, have been our key issues for over a decade. Worst part is they don’t look to be resolved anytime soon either. We can have all the top draft picks in the world, but if we can’t develop then and surround them with leaders then it’s a waste.

Oliver goes alright..

Either GWS come to us with a deal for pick 3 or we put in a bid for Green at that pick. It is just that simple.

You can never have enough quality midfielders, and our midfield depth is non-existent behind the big 4.

They simply don't have enough draft pick currency to get pick 3 off us. Pick 6 and their first next year which will be in the 20s most likely is nowhere near enough for the benefit they would get and the opportunity we would miss.

They had their chance during trade period to cough up a decent player to satisfy us, but refused to. If we think Green is the 3rd best player in the draft we will bid on him. Looks like he'd be in contention for no1 if he weren't an academy player.

my random incoherent thoughts

name Green at 3 if GWS match take young. if not we get a beauty either way. at 8 take Jackson if he's still there if not I like the thought of Pickett scaring sh*t out of defenders.

with Bennell and maybe brown and maybe Murray as mature age additions to go with Tomlinson and Langdon - looks not bhed trade season

I think it’s a virtual certainty that we will nominate Green and, in the unlikely event that GWS fails to match our bid, then so be it. We get a player considered in line with Rowell and Anderson.

If GWS matches the bid, we move on ...

And up... if GWS use up 6 for Green our 8 effectively moves up one spot

So if green is rated as good as the top two why don’t GC consider him?

Top 2 are best mates, which GC believe gives them a better chance at retaining them up there.

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

He is is starting to get into some sprints. I cannot see Andy Moniz-Wakefield out there. Jack Viney and Kade Chandler have broken away from the
