Wasn’t Roosy right into Myers from Essendon?

We tried to trade pick 2 for Myers and Colyer but Essendon wanted more.

We’ve had some train wreck drafting and trading but that would’ve been the holy grail of epic fails.

Darren Jarman

If only.  Definitely the worst "one that got away" imv.  Had he made the trip across in 86/87 we probably make 87 GF also.  If he hangs about till 94 i think we would have made it that year too.  The Bears had a dig after us and missed also.

A good read about how those shifty wee and pooh folk snatched him from under Adelaide's nose.  Another great example of the Hawk's rat cunning at draft time.   His wife, Sue, might also have played a big behind the scenes role in him going to the Hawks (with an assist from Kerley) as well as their return home to the Crows (excerpt courtesy of the Hun June 2013)....

How the Adelaide Crows lost Darren Jarman

Graham Cornes

..."In the tumultuous weeks at the end of the 1990 SANFL season, when it was inevitable that South Australia would have a team in the AFL, there were no provisions in place to sign or retain players.

Consequently, the smart AFL clubs had already moved on our best players. Gavin Wanganeen had been signed by Essendon; Matthew Robran by Hawthorn; David Hynes by West Coast and Justin Staritski by North Melbourne.

All of them should have been wearing Crows colours in our first year, but were spirited out of the state.

As a matter of urgency, Max Basheer and Leigh Whicker commissioned Bob Hammond, Neil Kerley and Murray ``Tumbles'' Tippet, one of the senior administrators at the SANFL, to compile a list of our 10 best players and attempt to sign them to a letter of agreement to play at the new Adelaide club. Darren Jarman was No. 1 on that list which included his brother Andrew, Chris McDermott and Garry McIntosh and Rod Jameson, who was on North Melbourne's footy trip at the time.

By and large, Bob, Kerls and Murray were quite successful and were working their way through the list, although Gary McIntosh caused great frustration when he wouldn't leave Norwood.

Darren Jarman was also in two minds, because Hawthorn had been quite persistent in trying to sign him.

But it's not fair to say that Kerls acted too slowly to get Jarman's signature, because eventually Jarman did sign a letter of intent to join Adelaide (they had no official AFL contracts yet), received a signing-on cheque and shook hands with Neil Kerley when the deal appeared done. However, this is where the story takes its controversial twist.

Kerls, by some accounts, had been a little too persuasive in his urgency to get the prized signature, to the point that Jarman and his wife Sue were a little shaken when the SANFL deputation had left and were extremely vulnerable to the Hawthorn recruiters who were able to convince them that what Jarman had signed was not an officially binding AFL document.

Consequently it was worthless, and he had a much better future in the brown and gold guernsey anyway.

Hawthorn then whisked the Jarmans off on holiday and there wasn't much Adelaide could do about it.

When Adelaide did protest, they were confronted with the now-infamous quote of Hawthorn's John Lauritz, who sneered: ``You're in the big league now''.

It's fair to say that Kerls never forgave Jarman (or Hawthorn), but to the rest of us it all happened for a reason and Darren Jarman is such a good man and great player who eventually repaid the Crows in spades, that we accepted it as one of life's lessons learned the hard way.

Just don't bring it up with Kerls!" ...

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
