Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Ouch.

I'll think twice before engaging with you in a battle of wits.

In all seriousness, this could be a good appointment but there is little wow factor or certainty about it and it is  mundane footy news for AFL followers.  If we get Roughy or Lewis in any capacity I will be excited so let see how it all plays out.

I read a few weeks back that Brad Green sadly lost his wife. Was he an assistant at any club? He could kick straight.

I don't want to come across insensitive here, but I think Green now has his hands full looking after his young boys.
I wouldn't expect him to be seeking an assistant coach role anytime too soon.

Macca came in as development coach and mentor to Goodwin.  Richardson seems a really honest, hardworking bloke but I just don't see that he has the credentials for the coach mentor part:

  • He hasn't shown he can build a successful game plan.
  • The saints list management was poor in his tenure.
  • Doesn't have coaching finals experience and then a long time ago
  • Hasn't been at a 'successful' club
  • Hasn't had any non-coaching football roles.

With that background I just don't see how he could guide Goodwin thru those areas and in particular help him avoid the pitfalls he fell into in the off-season.

If we have a coach mentor/director role we need someone who has had some success, imv

It appears to be putting just another step in the stairwell, down near the bottom. As it is, Goodwin is still just one step above.

Richo is a great get...I had hoped we would pick him up when the Saints were making life hard for him.

Forget his senior record, not all coaches excel in the senior role.

Richo is a very, very highly regarded assistant.

For the new sayers on here, you seriously have no idea...

I'd say Ratten is after the No.1 job.

But I agree with you're post, Ratt on face value seems a good coach as well.

If Goodwin could see Ratten coming to the MFC, he'd shake in his boots about his own role, his widespread credibility and record. So, Goody put his finger in the pie and has thus seen and enabled an early firming-up of another (Richardson) whose pedigree is sure to be considered lower than his own at the present moment. Something 'Putinesque' about that strategy, don't you think? Just a thought....

If he is an assistant coach only then great. If he is guiding and mentoring Goody - not so great.

I doubt he will be employed as an assistant only but we will see

Agreed it may not have a great wow factor. But the signing of a respected ex senior AFL coach who reporatably  had a number of options in the industry can only be framed as a positive. If for no other reason than for the fact he must rate us.

Signing richo runs completely contrary to the club is in crisis and has major issues narrative that some posters, yourself included, have been running hard with. As does the signing of burgess.

Good work from Mahoney and the club. Kudos.

Those who are reeling off his poor win/loss record as a senior coach need to look at it in context - he took over the Saints when they were beginning a complete rebuild after Watters left, not even Clarko would have had a decent win/loss in his first two years on that basis.   There was clear linear improvement until last year (a bit like us) and I don't agree that their game plan wasn't good; it was based on speed and pressure and when they had the cattle to implement it, they were pretty good, as we found out on too many occasions.  In fact, we got completely outcoached by them in Round 5 when they played rope a dope with us.    I think he did a remarkable job this year without Carlisle, Hannebery, Roberton, Geary, McCartin, Steven for most of the year, all of whom at their best would walk into any side (and definitely ours!).

I think it's a great get and brings some valuable experience to the coaching group.

@Ethan Tremblay, I don't mean to be a pain but I don't generally read the HS. I find their material to be mainly..  rubbish.

But regardless I had a quick look for completeness sake (after you commented on my thoughts) and I'd love for clarity purposes if you could point out where in the article it says Richo and Burgess worked together in the past and also where it mentions the MFC were planning on changing the gameplan/strategy.

Thanks in advance

PS: I do enjoy the newsbreakers stuff... no hard feelings

To be honest, I have no idea or opinion on this appointment. There is no clue as to his role within the structure of the coaching panel. Ask me again around the bye next year when we have some indication on the progress or lack thereof.

Well we are certainly great at employing people with no idea about winning one!

Perhaps, but we've also employed people who have - Goodwin played in back to back flags, and McCartney was heavily involved at Geelong during their run.  I guess my point is that I think that the whole "premiership player" or "involved in a premiership" is often overrated.  Plenty of duds have premiership medallions and plenty of stars don't.

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f

It's Game Day and the Demons once again open the round of football with their annual clash against Richmond on ANZAC Eve. The Tigers, coached by former Dees champion and Premiership assistant coach Adem Yze have a plethora of stars missing due to injury but beware the wounded Tiger. The Dees will have to be switched on tonight. A win will keep them in the hunt for the Top 4 whilst a loss could see them fall out of the 8 for the first time since 2020.

There’s a touch of irony in the fact that Adem Yze played his first game for Melbourne in Round 13, 1995 against the club he now coaches. For that game, he wore the number 44 guernsey and got six touches in a game the team won by 11 points.  The man whose first name was often misspelled, soon changed to the number 13 and it turned out lucky for him. He became a highly revered Demon with a record of 271 games during which his presence was acknowledged by the fans with the chant of “Oozee” wh
