Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

May setback + Jetta knee injury (8-10 weeks)

Surely a professional fitness guru (Misson) would have given every recruit including May a fitness assessment when recruited/drafted and provided them with a guide to how to arrive for the pre-season.

You would expect each player's manager would have also given some guidance on what is expected of players.

It appears to be a breakdown in communication between the club and players. Not a Professional outfit!

In Malthouses last season at Carlton, he was facing a large number of experienced players whom had had surgery or were recovering from injury. I remember because I took note that many of the 1sts whom I expected to be unavailable because of a lack of decent pre-seasoning, were picked for round one. They were beaten and a number played injured it seemed or became unavailable the following week. It had seemed to me that they were told to be professional and get out there.

I thought typical! But History seems to be repeating right here in River city.

Been reported on the Channel 7 pre-game today that May has had a major set back with his groin injury and will most likely not be back till July.

Can we blame Gold Coast for putting him back on the park after he clearly injured his groin?

Nothing to do with communication. All players are given an off season program and the majority of them have been around long enough to know what’s expected.

The recruiting of May is poor management?? What because he is injured? What a stupid comment.

Well I think it was poor management!  Could not believe we allowed Hogan to go in exchange for a very ordinary, thuggish defender.  Bloody hell! Hogan had survived a serious back injury, testicular cancer and the death of his dad, and we simply waved him goodby .i calculated last year that his goals per match ratio was higher than that of Josh Kennedy after the same number of games.

sure, he had some problems.  What sort of character was Jack Riewoldt three or more years ago?

To those who were happy to rely on Weideman instead of Hogan, I hope you are enjoying the Weid's sparkling start to the season!

Out of interest what were their issues?   I recall training reports saying various players were in 'rehab' but more to do with tempo of work rather than injury.

Even so do you think those issues prevented them having a full preseason ie missed many training sessions or would still be affecting their performance?

ANB - knee

Hore - ankle surgery

TMac - Ankle surgery, both ankles

Hibberd - He missed a chunk but cant remember - quad or calf maybe?

I think the latter two, particularly TMac have been affected. On top of a shortened preseason, I expect it would be quite telling. For Hore, he missed a bit pre-Christmas but was also learning our system / game plan (such that it is) as well as getting back to fitness.

Steven May | Groin – 4 weeks

“Maysie’s going pretty well. He’s had a couple of weeks of running and is backing it up well – not getting too sore. It’s about progressing his speed and agility and obviously then getting him into some training and setting him up for a good backend of the year.”

So that moron on Channel 7 saying May had a setback and wont be back til July was talking rubbish?

Would be more likely to be right than Misson. May was supposed to be getting back for this week now he is tracking well and 4 weeks away.

Maca is still on the bench,  this year.

IF there were serious issues between Maca and Goody,  or with players last year,  why was it we went so well in the 2nd half of 2018 ?

Maca went well as a developing coach with the Dogs... prior to being head coach there... and they won a flag with Beveridge...  Meaning Maca developed those kids fairly well,  me thinks.

Maca was also the development coach at the Catters for years,  and they certainly did very well around, and after his tenure,  at the Cats.

Nutshell, I don't think Maca is a bad issue.

Possibly he (maca) is putting the blame at the feet of the Players.   Is how I might speculate it.?

It is after all the players not the coaches who play the game, and only they can chase, shepherd, team up etc

Neville Jetta | Knee – 10-12

“Nev had an issue with his lateral meniscus. There was an incident in the second quarter that exacerbated that. He pulled up really sore after the game and after some consultation with our doc’s and surgeon, we decided to go down the surgical track.”

So Nev's injury was not a new one according to Misson...it just got worse. Go figure.

We know that all players carry injuries into games but to me Nev looked sore before the 2nd Q incident.

We're not handling these things well at the moment.

Which second quarter incident are they talking about? The injury report video that shows the Saints player diving across Nev’s leg happened in the first quarter.

Just came on here to post this.

So much for a 'new injury'.

Hardly shocking given he was limping around!

So wait, we're ten pages in and ready to give Dr. Misson our fitness coach the Game of Throne's treatment because;

A) Jetta suffered an incidental (illegal) knock to the knee during a football contest.

B) Channel 7 said May won't be back for ten weeks, although the club says it's four?

Half the AFL players play with niggles and existing injuries week to week and play with the risk of exacerbating problems. See Ryder in round one vs. us - one misdirected hit and he could have been sidelined for a month or more.

MFC Roos cares about one thing - prior, during and since his departure : Paul's legacy. He did good at our club but everything since has been slanted toward this single fact. He also achieved one premiership in eight years at Sydney, 15 years ago.

Prior to this year, Goodwin - with his own plan - has achieved a 28 - 20 win/loss record, and took the MFC and almost all of its players to their first prelim in 18 years. But let's set the dragons on him too, because obviously he has no idea.

Surely the players take responsibility for not coming back in the shape.

I’m sure they were given clear instructions on what they needed to do.  The clubs don’t need to baby the players, they are professional athletes.  This falls on the players.

In saying that I don’t think the story is 100% accurate. Roos has had an agenda for a long time about having more access to players and this just gave him another opportunity to push this point.

Thanks.

These are the articles I used https://www.melbournefc.com.au/news/2018-10-03/offseason-injury-update

https://www.afl.com.au/news/2018-12-08/wheres-your-club-at

And I couldn't find any ref to ANB, TMac and Hibberd.

Not wishing to correct you directly - just to have the discussion on interrupted preseason and current performance in the right context as surgeries are being quoted as excuses for players and the team (not by yourself).

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to
