Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

I didn't watch any of it but it would seem that to be within 7 points with minutes to go with virtually half the side not playing - including such key personnel such as Gawn, Jetta, Viney, Hibberd, Melksham, May, Vandenberg, Hannan, Lewis, Jones and Lever and I can't see the reason for concern.

The reason for concern was from about 10 minutes in to the 2nd quarter until 3/4 time we couldn't lay a glove on the Tigers. There's areas we should be much stronger in come the real stuff - midfield depth, ruck, almost the whole backline, but there's no excuse to keep turning the ball over out of the backline without even trying to switch or counter, to not even be close to locking the ball up forward and to struggle with simple things like not committing 2 players to tackle one opponent with the ball and leaving a free option. The middle quarters were like the Prelim last year in terms of style. We should've had enough good players in the game to prevent that.

The margin should've been closer to 10 goals by 3/4 time.

Great Camera the 5D. Many people are using them to shoot documentaries on in heavy countries, as they are easy to get through an airport,  no suspicion. Doing original tests at the ABC with a Flash Card we  could shoot 8 minutes of Top Quality Broacast Footage  and that was a few years ago, so i am sure the size of a Flash Drive has increased, never used a 7D, is that basically just more memory?

May , Gawn  Milkshake Viney, Vanders , Lewis, kolo, Hannan, hibberd and Jetta.  Lever sooner than you think. Not a bad lot.

They are all handy and that is what you call great depth.

Young Demons stood up well and pushed them hard early.  Clarry 2 preseason operations and Tmac  knee cleanout will be better for the run Jordan looks a player.  I am pleased with the effort put in today.

Overall we were playing a near full strength Tiger side and the boys stood up.I know it is a practice game but  deep down the                 Tiger FD might be a bit worried when they meet us in the season proper.  Looking forward to a big year.

Very early call but I don’t think Stretch, Maynard, JKH, either Wagner or any of the draftees will get much of a look at senior footy this year.  From left field, but I reckon ANB might struggle to get a regular game too.

Hope Garletts shoulder is not too bad. I still think he has something to contribute, but thats a big setback for him.

I think it was a good hitout on a very hot day. Wheres the run? Its close to 40 deg so that would explain that.

Who needs to win games in JLT. You cant win a flag in March, but like they say you can lose one. Glad we only had the 1 injury.

Gus will win the Brownlow.

Staggered that some people are disappointed with the performance. It looked like we could lose by 10 goals at one stage but they fought it out.

Most non Dees fans would not have known more than half our team out there today.

Plenty to like in my opinion.

Who is going to replace ANB?

He is very much a meat and potatoes sort of player, but i cannot see anyone pushing him out of his spot this year.

I blame myself (MFCSS).

The score was 52 - 22 our way when I turned it on. 10 mins later, scores were level.

LOL. Same. I am also the reason every Aussie tennis player loses their match when it looks like they are going to win. As soon as I start watching they collapse.

It seems we aren't allowed those types.  They must all be superstars who hit every target and make zero mistakes.

ANB has his shortcomings, but he kicked 27 goals for us last year and played a vital role in many games.  He is a little underrated by our supporter base.

Some thoughts:

hore looks promising and will be a solid player in the backline if needed

smith looked good as the third tall when we played well - first quarter

tigers outplayed for most of the match

the Preuss hype will take a hit. Poor in the ruck and didnt influence the match. I guess he has only played 7 matches

clarry has somehow gotten better. I feel privileged to watch him play

ANB is exactly the sort of player a team like ours needs. Someone who runs all game BOTH ways, and doesnt stop running. We would be a lesser team without him. They cant all be an Oliver or Brayshaw.

I assume come round one it will be ANB and Spargo both in the side. Spargo is a similar player with better class and potential.

If we stick with 2 pressure forwards then Corey Wagner is a very similar player who might have a little stronger hands and nicer field kick, but he's hardly a clean user and probably only gives 80% of the defensive pressure.

Garlett seems unlikely. Hannan is a long way off. Joel Smith was underwhelming in terms of pressure as well as skill. Bedford and Chandler remain unseen, it's unlikely they are ready.

Would the midfield mix ever get so deep that we're rotating Vanders, Jones, Fritsch through half forward as well as Petracca/Viney/Oliver/Gus/Harmes and they all provide enough forward pressure to do with one less dedicated pressure forward?

ANB isn't under immediate threat but he has to show some skills under pressure and not just when we're 10 goals up against bad sides. He's not so great of a defensive force that he can spud it up every time we play a team that puts pressure back on him. He has to make some quicker and better decisions and he has to be stronger at the contest and take some bodies.

Some observations.

Clarrie plays his own game. When we learn to take advantage of his contribution, then we will roll.

Tracca needs to adjust to playing a shorter game. Not every kick has to be long and not every mark is an invitation to play on. He will get there soon.

Why was Gus kicking with his left foot even when clear on his right? Sore back on one side only? Still many classes above the toigs best except dusty.

The new kick in rule is tailor made for runners like Frost and Hunt who can, with judicious shepherding and placement, easily gain 20-30 m with only one bounce and then kick it long so that the first contest is in our half. This tactic was not seen in the parts that I watched today. I can wait.

Preuss might not be a Maxxie clone but he contests and denies the opposition an easy clearance. Some of his early taps were well directed and his contribution at ground level was useful. If used intelligently, it is the combination that should terrify other teams. Give it time.

It's tough for five new players to meld in their first competitive game. Give them time to absorb the tean plan and style.

At one stage one of the dumb commentators asked the rhetorical question of what TMac will do the next time he plays on rancid. I hope he never plays on him again and someone like Tracca or AVB does so that TMac's doesn't look silly playing like a small and running after him. Tracca and AVB have the strength and nous to make rencid's life difficult. Let TMac be TMac.

At last real footy is back.

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
