This is another decision Goody has a huge tick next to his name. Which in a way is a bit sad because i too was a huge fan of Hoges.

It really upsets me when mental health issues are seen as character flaws as expressed by some in this thread. None of us know the full story, so just let it be.

Wow.  Poor guy.  I hope he has someone who is helping him with his anxiety.

Making poor choices around alcohol may or may not be caused by the anxiety, or even correlated.  I do not know if this is a club imposed ‘sanction’ for his alcohol abuse against club rules, self imposed or negotiated?

No listed return date.  Looks bad.  I wish the young man every success in getting well.

I think it was a common problem for footballers back in the day too, it's just that it wasn't as openly spoken about back then.  North Melbourne great Wayne Schwass is someone who has acknowledged that and tried to make a positive change in how mental health is perceived and managed in the AFL.

I could never realise why the club let him go unless there was something wrong with him. So be it. Is it just the booze ???

When he started with the MFC we were a crap team and he was expected to be the Messiah from about age 17.  ...and he did a pretty good job of doing just that for a number of years.

A few doses of humility and empathy would be good virtues in this situation.

Hogan will be fine at Freo. He gave us hope for several years is now back home in WA. I'll be wrapped to see him work through mental health challenges and have a long successful career, so long as its not v Melb in September. Get around the bloke, he has a big heart and has been through alot.

But the idea Goody or the club would ship out a player who is struggling with mental health issues is archaic and insulting.  Can you imagine Sydney shipping Buddy off after the 2015 season?   It wouldn’t happen at Sydney or Melbourne.

Jesse asked to be traded and Josh Mahoney said  “we will do the best thing we can, if we can get you back to Perth we will, but it needs to be a good deal for us.” No different to Lachie Neale requesting to be traded to Brisbane.  Mental health had zero to do with it.

Because he wanted to leave? And we saw an opportunity to land another asset by moving him on now.

MFC were "happy" to see Hogan go.

They were delighted with the outcome of the trade.

Interesting that both May and Hogan for different reasons are unavailable round 1. They are virtual swaps. Hope Jesse can have a good season except against us.

I think you might be misunderstanding what some of the posters on here are saying, the mental health side of him would've been well known to them and it must have been a factor in making the decision to move him on/let him go. They may have weighed up the facts that the increasing scrutiny around him factored with his mental health would contribute to negative or distracting media attention that could bring additional issues on the club. They would also have weighed up the belief that getting him back to Perth would be the best thing for him and allow us to facilitate a trade. To think that we would dismiss it entirely is ridiculous.

For Jesse I hope he's able to work through his issues, it's hard to think of another young player that's gone through so much emotional upheaval at such a young age, and at some stage that rollercoaster was always going to take its toll.

That’s the part that alarmed me. It’s obviously way deeper than a simple club imposed sanction.  Seems like  Freo have decided that keeping things hidden wasn’t helping him . But It’s a big risk to go public w a mental health concern if it’s not player driven.  hopefully it was and it works out well for both parties.  

Ross Lyon hasn’t been lucky w big name recruits at St Kilda or freo.

If you've doubted some of Goody's decisions I suggest you start having some faith.

I see, people  are connecting hogans trading to his mental health  as a reason, just think about that, your saying that anybody in the team that has mental health conditions are on the trading block. And many think like that in the media and say the same things. No wonder men between the age of 25  to 40 have a high  suicide rates.  these views give people with mental health issues a complex and low self-esteem, it makes them think that people think that they are undesirable to be at their club or be mates with.

Please confine discussion to information released by mainstream sources. Discussion on other incidents circulating will be removed. If those incidents become reported in the mainstream media then you may discuss. Until then moderators have the right to remove such content and it's discussion. Just covering ourselves.

Perhaps all parties felt his mental health could be assisted by returning to WA. 

I know we all used to joke about him not smiling, therefore he 'wasnt happy' at MFC...

But in reality, has he ever, really looked happy? Has always seemed to have this dark cloud over his shoulder, like he could never really enjoy his life as a footy player - and this was well before his horror run with his cancer scare and father passing.

I wish him all the best, but from the outside he seems to have deeper issues than just anxiety. Booze isnt the answer either, it is just going to multiply the problems.

Exactly. I heard a rumour his Mum didn't want him to come back to Perth due to his mates. Not sure how truthful that is but his partying has seemed to escalate since he got back.

I've seen all the videos you're talking about.... alcohol consumption doesn't seem to be the main problem.
