If we get Wines we are going 25-0 next season.   This is not hyperbole.

We would have quite literally the greatest midfield ever assembled.

Melbourne had a chance to pick him up the same year that Viney was picked at 26 in the father and son selection in 2012. Viney and Wines friends from a young age playing junior footy. However as it turned out Toumpas got through  at 4  in Melbourne's selection  and  picked him up instead.  Wines went at no. 7. to Port. I somehow think that he won't pick us if he wanted to leave Port. It's just a hunch. He would be more than handy if we acquired him but I think at the time the grapevine had him going to Melbourne. You would have to ask Todd Viney why we didn't pick him up.

If Todd Viney knows why I would love for him to elucidate us if for no other reason to help us all avoid unnecessarily wasting time on baseless speculation

Haven’t heard that, but I was listening to SEN when they asked Jack Viney who he’d take and he said Jimmy Toumpas.

Oh well, we take Wines and he drags us over the line in a few of the close games in 2014 and 15.  This pushes us up the draft order and we miss out on Petracca, Brayshaw and Oliver.  Essendon won’t accept a later second round pick for Melksham and Hibberd and tell us to take a hike.  Another club pounces on ANB and O’Mac and Tom McDonald leaves the Dees to play alongside his brother.  Hogan doesn’t want to play in a forward line without any support so he departs and Lewis doesn’t sign onto a club that doesn’t even have a key forward.

Passing on Wines was the best thing we’ve ever done.

Not a bad argument. Certainly makes us all feel better!

Go on to the BF Port forum.

Some don't overly care if he goes, as his kicking isn't up to scratch.

But, like others, Gaff is the one we need.

On AW tonight apparently we're also into Ed Langdon, along with a couple of other clubs.

For all the grief that we have suffered under Neeld, I don't think it fair to blame him for this selection.

And I have also wondered, and I think said on these forums what TPF39 has said below (though maybe not being quite so enthusiastic as his last sentence.

Trac, Brashaw, Oliver  >> Wines alone.

Did that come from the same goose who said we were making a play for Zac Dawson back in the day..

The week before the draft.

He based it on skills, leadership and training standards.  We shouldn’t forget that Toumpas was a junior star and was considered a top 2 pick all year, whilst  Wines was a bolter who was projected to be a late first rounder leading into the U18 champs.

Theyre kids, it happens- just ask O’Rourke and Plowman who went at 2 and 3.

We should have got Wines over Doupass, however Wines would have cut his wrist playing under Neeld.Doupass was the right (b.s) fit for us. Do we need Wines probably not ,if Hunt and J.Smith hit their straps we might not need a Gaff. Isn't Ginga Ninja quick?

Ok, makes sense.

As you say, Toumpas looked like a good pickup to me at the time.  Standing up as an under 18 and playing well in a senior SANFL grand final spoke volumes to me that he was made of the right stuff... just went down hill from there.  I guess it's a pretty big jump playing SANFL to AFL and different playing in the best team in the comp to slogging it our trying to make your way in the game with the wooden spooner.

The other reasonable defense for picking up Toumpas over Wines in my mind would be that we already had three on ball bulls in the bag at that point with Jones, Vince and Viney, so some outside polish to complement that also made sense from a ballance perspective.

Dean Terlich and Jamar should get it done.

But seriously, not a need. We need more of a Toumpas type ironically enough.

Gaff or gtfo.

IMO Kent, Frost and ANB should be held onto, on their day they’re all unstoppable

If Wines wanted to move, and we had the opportunity, I would grab him and not Gaff.

No slight on Gaff at all, but Wines in our midfield,,, with Vince, Lewis soon, and Jones soon enough as well, all will have finished by 2021-22.

That would then leave us inside with,  Viney, Oli, Petracca, Harmes, Brayshaw, Salem, Maynard.

... that inside list, looks a LOT better, with Wines added to it.

Viney, Wines, Oli, Petracca, Harmes, Brayshaw, Salem, Maynard.

Future thinker: like it, agree with your longer-term synopsis. Wines would be a gun, but at some point our midfield would negate the availability of KPPs at both ends of the ground..

i also agree with your Gaff perspective- with a team currently slicing through the middle,  is it that necessary?

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,
