Go and get Gaff!

Two things Gaff would have seriously learnt in the last two weeks:

He's got the monkey on his back from WC/Flag, and all who sail in her, and

He's not going to readily get rid of it at North.....

I reckon there’s 8.4 million reasons why he’ll move on pretty quickly.

If Gaff wasn't in this equation i would have thought hard on Brayshaw, but i reckon it's complicated.

I also think there's a couple of young beauties at Footscray, but hard to prise out.  There is also a value player to think hard on turning a son of a gun into a gun backman MK2 from Black and white

I'm not that fussed to be honest. It strikes me as a 'nice' idea...not maybe a getable one. That said what are the plan B's ?? :)

What happens ? What happens to what ?

Does Gaff, or Shiel, have to go to the highest bidder, or do they have a choice of team they prefer irrespective of money offered?

Could we get Gaff, or Shiel, even with huge offers being dangled under their noses ?

Gaff vs Shiel (2018)

Gaff vs Shiel Career

Based on what I've witnessed and backed up by these stats I'd still take Gaff before Shiel although there's not a lot in it.

Close isn’t it.

I lean towards Shiel because of the burst acceleration factor out of congestion. Perfect compliment to Clarry, Gus and Vines.

Race is hotting up for both though. Saints have now upped their ante for Shiel to $8m over 6 years. Reckon he’s the type of guy though to settle for a bit less coin to play for a Vic club with genuine flag aspirations. Reckon it’s out of Hawks, Bombers and hopefully ... us!

marginal stats Re clangers etc...

Gaff has more time on-ground so endurance is stronger... Crossy could fix that area for Shiel.

But i like Shiels clearance numbers... and his burst from inside to space.

We cannot let the Hawks do us over again on player recruits.   Stand up Mfc and do the DEAL.

'KadeK' will kelp us outside, and Stretch and hopefully one other, will add to our wide game.

Let Gaff get off__

North are still a very average team, even with Gaff, Polec and Hall coming in. Josh Kelly won't make them a hell of a lot better either.

They also won't have the butter soft draw like this year.

Well I'm sure we gave it all we had but in light of other recent trade rumours there’s still going to be a lot happening at the MFC this year.

Gaff will be one of the few players to take the big $$ over staying or going to a club in a premiership window.  Others I can think of to move on big $$ and end badly were:

  • Ablett (the years at GCS do not reflect well on him, despite his Brownlow there),
  • HW$NBN - forever to be the quintessential AFL Judas!  But may still get his Premiership.

Others who took the big $$ but at a Premiership contending club were Buddy and Tom Boyd.

Gaff seems a really decent bloke who seemed emotionally invested in the Eagles.  I hope for his sake he does not regret the extra $$ over what might have been at the Eagles or other Vic clubs because I doubt North can come close to winning a Premiership with Scott as coach.

Sucks up a lot of the Nuff Nuff war chest.

It does make them better...not not much in great scheme of things.

Nuffnuff pretty much just middle order team.

doubt it .. especially if the dollar differences are of the magnitude that Sheils and Gaff have been offered.

Each had an approximately $2 million differential

Scully made the right choice. If there is complaint it is only about how he handled it. Personally I give an 18-19 year old some leeway.

The real question with the teams that are paying the $1.2M a year for non specialised positions is what it does to salary levels across that team. There's a lot more to play out on that stage especially for clubs with star midfields.

I think it is great, about time the smaller clubs win a big name FA signing.

We bemaoned we couldn’t bring in any big name FAs and how they would chose big clubs.

Who cares how much they paid, as some others have said leave that to the bean counters and see how Gaff translates to North making finals.

Well done North.

Examples of other players taking the big $$ to the two I mentioned are...?

(Shiel has not yet accepted the big $$ being thrown at him by Carlton and StK.  In fact he is said to be favouring the Hawks for $900k per season).

They will also have over 2 mil tied up between Polec & Gaff in salary cap space.

They over achieved massively this year & really began to get found out in the later part of the year.

I think Brisbane & Essendon will surpass them this year & they will finish in the 10-13 range again.

Huh? Apparently Gaff is still coming to the dees according to some on here because Josh Mahoney is playing mind games....?

It's not that he's playing mind games, I think a lot of the supporters see him as an incredibly diligent person, who has historically been able to do some great recruiting, without us being aware until it happens... these lines of thoughts are more of a sign of respect for the bloke if anything...

How is Hawthorn managing to look at Shiel AND Wingard??

After bringing in Jaegar and Mitchell?

They have no picks to speak of... a lot of players must be taking unders....or have jobs provided by player sponsors etc...They always seem to know how to sail close to the wind on salary and membership issues....

Apparently Ryan Burton is being shopped around as a way of potentially bringing in Shiel. I don’t know what Burton would be worth.

Wingard (with tail between legs) has decided to stay at Port.  No-one willing to pay the $1m pa he was asking.

Re picks Hawthorn always seem to find a way of doing the deals they want done ala O'Meara and Mitchell (both of whom didn't go for big $$).  From a salary cap point of view they have Rioli off their books and Roughy and 'Silk' off their books in a year.  If Shiel chooses Hawks they will make it happen.

I think Burton is a good player and should get them a high 2nd round pick

Doggies supporters will be disappointed with Wingard not coming to them... They were sure it was going to happen given Dalhaus' departure and apparently Wingard and Jackson Trengove are pretty tight mates.

Apologies to those who read my “We’ve got Gaff” posts. That was my mail. I’ll hold off next time I hear something and let others confirm. He would of looked great in red and blue on $750,000

    DELUGE by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons overcame their inaccuracy and the wet inhospitable conditions to overrun the lowly Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval in Cramer Street, Preston on Saturday. It was an eerie feeling entering the ground that in the past hosted many VFA/VFL greats of the past including the legendary Roy Cazaly. The cold and drizzly rain and the sparse crowd were enough to make one want to escape to the nearby Preston Market and hang out there for the afternoon. In the event, the fans

    INSANITY by Whispering Jack

Somehow, the Melbourne Football Club managed it twice in the course of a week. Coach Simon Goodwin admitted it in his press conference after the loss against the Brisbane Lions in a game where his team held a four goal lead in the third term:   "In reality we went a bit safe. Big occasion, a lot of young players playing. We probably just went into our shell a bit. "There's a bit to unpack in that last quarter … whether we go into our shells a bit late in the game."   Well

    UNBACKABLE by The Oracle

They’re billing the Brisbane Lions as a sleeping giant — the best team outside the top eight —and based on their form this month they’re a definite contender for September AFL action. Which is not exactly the best of news if you happen to be Melbourne, the visiting team this week up at the Gabba.  Even though they are placed ahead of their opponent on the AFL table, and they managed to stave off defeat in their last round victory over North Melbourne, this week’s visitors to the Sunshi

    WILDCARDS by KC from Casey

Casey’s season continued to drift into helplessness on Sunday when they lost another home game by a narrow margin, this time six points, in their Round 13 clash with North Melbourne’s VFL combination. The game was in stunning contrast to their last meeting at the same venue when Casey won the VFL Wildcard Match by 101 points. Back then, their standout players were Brodie Grundy and James Jordon who are starring in the AFL with ladder leaders, the Sydney Swans (it turned out to be their last
